When I found out that I was returning to Doctor Who, I was fine up until about three weeks before shooting and then I had a minor breakdown, and I thought I could never play that character again. So I went out desperately, frantically, buying box sets and watching my own performance.

Sometimes I remember that David spends all this time, year after year, in convention halls where kids and adults tell him all about how much he means to them, and how special and talented he is, and how attractive and beloved he is, and he always seems so humbled and touched and self-effacing.

And then I think "he must go home afterwards and get to be such a good dad and husband and use that positive energy to do good for those he loves"

But actually he just climbs trees and scares the shit out of his wife

Donna saw the Doctor and instantly decided they should come as a set. Like, "You're going somewhere? No, WE are going somewhere." It was family in the making right from the start.
