10 posts!
Our beloved Anteaters won the team Sportsmanship Award at both the Spring Invitational AND Nationals. We have always known UCI to be a friendly group here in SoCal and they certainly deserve this national recognition. This isn't the first time the Eaters have gotten this award, however. UCI also earned the honor in 2010 at Nationals. Way to go, guys! We are so proud to have you as part of #TOCSOCAL!
In honor of the start of the 2014 Spring Invitational, enjoy this pic of the 2013 Champions! USC won the whole tournament, but also won the prestigious award of "Most Shirtless." 10 Southern California teams are competing (from 9 schools) in the Invitational in Tuscon, AZ, which happens to run alongside the National Championships happening right now in Surprise, AZ. Good luck to all of our teams!
So what do you do when you graduate and leave all of your Tennis On Campus friends behind? You join the growing group of TOC alumni and host your old friends in an Alumni vs. Students Challenge! SoCal has FIVE teams headed to the National Championships this month, and the TOC Alumni invited two LA-area teams to compete for some practice before the big tourney! UC Irvine and USC battled two teams of alumni at the LA Tennis Center. The students came out on top, a true testament to the talent in our SoCal schools. At the same time, UCSB hosted Cal Poly for a practice match of their own. Look at that inter-team bonding! We wish all of our schools the best of luck at Nationals!
Big shout out to our amazing student leaders! We had three team reps receive sectional awards this year for their outstanding service. Harmonie Edelson of USD and Jenny Budd and Wade Houldin of SDSU were all recognized at our Sectional Championship for their hard work. The three have worked tirelessly to develop competitive teams for the Tennis On Campus Program. Harmonie also received the 2014 SCTA Leader of the Year award for her work, which also put her in the running for a national award. Congrats!
So what's #TOCSoCal all about? Watch this!
So, our Instagram contest was a great success and here are some of our favorites! We asked students to post pictures that best represented their Tennis On Campus experience by using #TOCSOCAL. We had to sift through 80 pictures to pick a winner, but a winner was chosen! Mary Swanson of Pepperdine won a $50 gift card to Tennis Warehouse for her pic shot through a chain link fence. Her caption? "Teamwork."
The 2014 Annual Classic at UCI was a great success! We had 21 teams participate. It was the perfect tourney for some serious competition before Regionals... but we still had plenty of time to goof off.
Apparently TOC Alum who play together, later work together... This is Ai Takamori of UCSD, Grant Chen of UCLA, and Madeline Segura of USC. All three competed in TOC during their college years, and they now all work out of the Los Angeles Tennis Center. Ai handles junior competition for the SCTA. Madeline handles adult competition. And Grant is the Assistant Coach for UCLA's men's tennis team. It's a TOC reunion every day!
Each fall, California teams - and even some from out of state - flock to sunny San Luis Obispo for Cal Poly's annual club tennis invitational. This is the first opportunity SoCal teams have to see what other TOC sections are cookin' up for Nationals, and the competition is always FIERCE. By day, teams take to the courts and battle for the fall season's biggest title. By night, they enjoy the nightlife along the streets of Downtown "SLO."
Sun, November 17th @ UCLA. The day previous, TOC held matches at CSUN, but due to a large number of players and limited courts we chose to try a "Speed Tennis" format. That meant 3 rounds for all teams, 1 court per match, and yes, we played service lets! Each individual match was 15 minutes, and a buzzer provided a 3 minute warning to end the set. On-the-fly substitutions were allowed! Total scores were recorded all day, and the winning percentages determined the draws for Sunday at UCLA. That's what we call #speedtennis
