The Little Matchgirl

A little insight! This is a “children’s book” set in the time of the Industrial Revolution.

A young girl has to go out and sell matches and is not allowed to come back until she does because her father is an abusive drunk to her and her siblings. Their mother is dead. On this particular day, she can NOT sell her matches so she retreats to a corner but it’s winter so it is dreadfully cold. With ever match she lights, she dreams of Christmas related things such as a well decorated tree or a Christmas dinner. But she can’t have them because she is too poor. With her last match, she dreams of spending time with her grandmother on Christmas but it fades too soon. That being her last one, she goes to sleep but her grand mother retrieves her.

If you couldn’t recognize it in the last gif, the girl has frozen to death.

We usually associate the terrifying and tentacular creations of H. P. Lovecraft with an imaginary (we hope, oh how we hope) version of New England. Weird and terrible things are afoot throughout Lovecraft Country. But today we learned about another place where Cthulhu’s worshippers gather to chant “Ph’nglui mglw’nafh Cthulhu R’lyeh wgah’nagl fhtagn”, possibly with margaritas in hand, while sitting on the laps of some of the strangest sculptures we’ve ever seen.

Down in sunny Puerto Vallarta, on the boardwalk overlooking the beautiful waters of the Bahía de Banderas, stands a fantastically odd and distinctly Lovecraftian sculptural installation entitled La Rotunda del Mar (The Circle of the Sea), created in 1997 by Mexican artist Alejandro Colunga.

PVPulse.com describes it as “….a number of high-backed bronze chairs that mix fantastic human features and nautical imagery – one chair is topped with an octopus, others are humans with an old diving helmet and what looks to be a periscope. Facing all of the chairs is a bench with two giant human ears.”

the problem with tumblr is that it teaches people to politicize everything, including things with no political connotations. so you get 13 year-olds still in their phase where they think they can talk to animals and have unicorn imaginary friends, being taught that this makes them oppressed and that they should hate anyone who challenges this idea.

Just something that’s been on my mind. Tumblr has this specific way of handling communities. These are just the ones that come by on my dash, I’m sure there are plenty more examples.

First they start out nice, tolerant, willing to listen and learn.

But they quickly become too nice and tolerant. Rather than simply accepting group X, they begin to overglorify them. They make them into something more special than people outside of group X, and coupled with their compulsive need to belong and feel special, desire to be a part of it too.

In comes the appopriation. If they can’t be a part of it, they’ll make themselves a part of it, one way or another. And is someone in group X not acting the way their fantasy version of them acts? Call them out on it!

They become so fanatical that they begin to talk over, or drive out the original people of group X.

And then finally they manage to become so hateful, their initial tolerance has turned into cold, terrifying intolerance. Calling gay/trans men privileged over white straight cis women, telling transsexual people to die, purposefully triggering people they dislike into panic attacks, defending Muslims to the point of calling the attack on Charlie Hebdo justified. And sending death threats to anyone who dares to disagree.

Being excluded from a group or community because you don’t belong there is not oppression.

It simply means that group does not describe or fit you as an individual.

If you can’t accept that, you have far deeper issues than your imagined ‘oppression’.
