"This should be self-evident."

“Fiction doesn’t affect reality.”
Sure buddy.
And then hypothetical scenarios are FICTIONAL scenarios meant to mimic real situations and a persons response reflects THEM as a person.
Analogies are FICTIONAL scenarios meant to make a COMPARISON to REALITY.
Propaganda was MADE to AFFECT REALITY, despite the actual media, or depictions, or pictures being FICTIONAL scenarios.
Several pieces of literature, especially banned books (ex. Fahrenheit 451, Animal Farm, To Kill a Mockingbird), were made as CRITIQUES to REALITY, the future, and politics, despite the fact the stories are FICTIONAL.
Cautionary tales were meant to teach children not to do certain things that may be dangerous, hence the ‘moral of the story.’
Everything that says SOMETHING affects something.
Stories will always say something, fiction will ALWAYS say something.
When it comes to fiction, who are the makers?
Real people.
When it comes to fiction, who are the consumers?
Real people.
Fiction has a meaning to it and it says something and it EFFECTS people. That’s what stories are and why people make them. To affect people. To say something. To encourage something.
To say fiction doesn’t affect reality is to say that emotions aren’t reality and people aren’t reality.
We are reality, and we create fiction, and we consume it, and it changes our lives from when we were born and how we develop and grow as a society.
Fiction shapes reality in a tremendous way and there is absolutely no way to downplay that fact.
I mean this sincerely in every single way. Saying that fiction affects reality does not entail that you are advocating for censorship. And if youre worried about censorship in the first place, have a deep thought about what material that is that is making people feel uncomfortable in the first place.
I had a friend unfortunately like this who consistently consumed media that romanticised abuse, engaged in often times questionable media and developed the mindset that there is no such thing as a 'thought crime' mind you THERE IS.
If you are constantly engaging in media that romanticizes themes of abuse, chances are, you'll find yourself becoming desensitised to actual stories of abuse. Because reading or consuming a piece of fiction, has scientifically been proven to improve our empathy and literacy skills. And if you are constantly consuming stories that explicitly romanticizes these themes of abuse, you are subconsciously emapthizing with the characters doing said abuse.
Its not hard to connect the dots. You can still read stories where abuse takes place but isnt romanticized. You can still read and consume in media where there is graphic violence being discussed including heavy topics like cannibalism and rape.
But reading it when it doesnt romanticize those topics and reading it when it DOES romanticize it to consume it occasionally, are ENTIRELY two separate things. This is fact.
Happy readings, and do not let Internet spaces tell you that fiction doesnt affect reality. It does. Its quite literally why we think the way that we do. Stories influence our lives directly and will continue on to do so!
OP here :) reblogging your reblog because it’s important as well.
