my semi-annual post-hiatus update

hiii so i know i haven’t been active on tumblr + twitter for a while now (around 3 months and counting i think) and i apologize to all my mutuals and followers for whom i yet again vanished off the face of the earth without warning

this was partly due to school stuff and online classes - you know the usual - though this time my hiatus on twitter wasn’t really planned, as it was more a result of account and log-in issues, plus my phone’s not really working rn either, so everything just kinda piled up. and idk when i can have them fixed so yeah… in the meantime i’ll be checking in on tumblr from time to time, with occasional bursts of activity whenever i feel like it

and just to give an update to anyone who cares: my mental health hasn’t exactly been the best even with the break i took from social media, but i’ve been hanging on and i guess that’s what matters for now. my family and i celebrated christmas a few days ago and we’ll also be celebrating new year’s soon, and i think it’s been a fairly enjoyable time all in all. over the course of the hiatus, i also got into american vandal, the owl house, and the kyoshi novels; watched season 2 of hilda and some films like the wind rises, john denver trending, and patay na si hesus (the latter two are filipino films); replayed butterfly soup; and yes i’m still making my way through the final case of aai1, unfortunately. i’m at least looking forward to reblogging stuff and making niche posts for those new fandoms though

also happy holidays to everyone who celebrates them! i know this hasn’t been the best year for most of us, me included, what with the pandemic and all the other shit that’s been going down, but if you made it to the end of 2020, i think that already counts as a pretty worthy accomplishment :-) i don’t know what 2021 will bring us but i’m wishing us all a pleasant time for the remainder of this year plus at least a somewhat less shitty, nicer new year to come <3

UPDATE: my phone finally got fixed/reset last week! as of now i'm mainly using my phone again for tumblr stuff. however i'm not sure yet when i can return to twitter because apparently my account got suspended in the time i was gone?? though i don't know exactly when since i never got an email notifying me about that

i do believe it was due to "suspicious activity" coming from my account that twitter staff suspended me, but that's explainable - it likely detected my multiple attempts to log back into my account (and i was never successful) after twitter logged me out for some reason, back when my phone was still acting up and shortly before it totally shut down. so i've sent an appeal/complaint to twitter staff asking them to consider unsuspending my account for those reasons, and now i'm just waiting for a response from them, hopefully sooner than later

the point of the riddle isn’t to figure out which one is lying, in fact, knowing which one lies and which one tells the truth is irrelevant. What you want is the correct answer from the magical beast/two guards/etc. Usually this means knowing which path to take. For that, you HAVE to ask it “if i ask the other head/guard/etc which is the safe way to go, what will they tell me?”

if you asked the truth-telling one, they’ll tell you the wrong way, because the liar will always mislead you. if you ask the liar, they’ll tell you the wrong way, because they’re misleading you, so

ALWAYS do the opposite of whatever answer you get.

A few years ago a friend threw a halloween party, and since he dressed as the Riddler, he decided to have a riddle contest.

now, i’ve been preparing for a riddle contest my entire life, since i first read the hobbit and it got bilbo out of trouble. for some reason, i assumed riddle contests were as inevitable as quicksand.

I answered the first riddle easily (it was one of the ones from the hobbit) and then i had to answer the next one to win a bottle of top-shelf rum. it was a variation on the two-guard riddle, only i had to choose one of two paper bags. one had crappy cheap vodka, the other the nice rum. 

the host and his friend did the classic one lies one tells the truth thing, and of course before i asked everyone started shouting “ask him what color your hair is!” and stuff like that, but i already knew what to ask, so i shushed them and won the rum

remember, kids, it doesn’t matter which one is lying and which one is telling the truth. all that matters is you get the correct knowledge to move you forward, win your rum, and make you seem like a superhuman riddle-solver to a crowd of drunken party guests.

Here’s a thing that usually doesn’t come up when people try to criticise this riddle as well. One of the conditions of the riddle is typically that you only get to ask one question. You arrive at the liar and the truth teller and you need to find out which bridge is safe and which one will collapse when you’re halfway across.

They tell you that one of them always lies and that one of them always tells the truth. And they tell you you can ask them one question.

If you ask “What’s two plus two?” than great. You know which one lies but you also still don’t know which bridge you can cross and can’t find out.

Alright. I normally would not make this sort of post here, but I recently discovered the existence of “cultcore”. Seeing the trauma that myself and other close friends experienced growing up in this situation romanticized by many people who clearly did not go through any of it is shocking and somewhat horrific.

Here are some things I would like to say on the matter:

“Cult” is not a funny word. It’s not a word you should call your friend group, it’s not a word you should call a fan base, and it’s not a word you should call your Discord server. Cults are not some otherworldly mystical beast. They are not the grandiose horror film and campfire story depictions of blood sacrifice or chanting in circles, at least not most of them, and not in ways that you would expect. Cults are sneaky. They make their control seem healthy to the people they draw in, and condition their victims to believe that the rituals they take place in are normal, and nothing out of the ordinary. Cults want your time, your money, and your family. Cults teach you that they are the only right way to live. They engulf you. They convince you that any other way of life, any attempts to leave, will result in misery, damnation, and hell. Cults are very real. It is more likely than you think that a person you know is involved in a cult. It is more likely than you think that someone who know has been hurt by a cult. It is more likely than you know that a friend of yours was raised in a cult. Cults are not a joke. They are not funny, your aesthetic, or something that you should make light of if you are ill-informed of their reality. I am begging you, whoever you are, to stop treating cults like a joke. Stop saying things that erase the suffering of cult survivors.

There’s a popular post going around that’s like “well tone indicators are helpful for people for anxiety because some people need stuff like “ /nm (not mad)” or “ /nbh (nobody here)” and I absolutely get it because I have an anxiety disorder but like. You can very much add that on the text of a message itself and it will be way more clear and accessible than expecting them to memorize this whole new fabricated code. 

Which one do you think will be clearer, faster to understand, and more direct to the point:

“oh my god someone is pissing me off /nbh”

“oh my god someone (not from this server, don’t worry) is pissing me off”

or

“have you done the dishes? /nm

“have you done the dishes? don’t worry, im not mad, just wondering”

You can be mindful of someone else’s needs and talk to them in a way that is respectful and understanding of those needs. The key is communication. Expecting people to memorize a lot of abbreviations is like the contrary of accessible.

Another point for why it’s important to own your own copies of music and media, and not use streaming services, is because the copy you own can’t be taken back.

(This is also a good time to remind people that yout*be to mp3 converters still exist).

And this is one of the reasons why I still own an MP3-Player + an extensive MP3 collection consisting of songs I ripped from various sources. Nowadays I mostly rip my songs from Spotify because of the audio quality. And since I’ve had people ask me how to do this in the past, here’s a short tutorial:

Install Audacity

On the microphone symbol, select either “Loudspeaker/Headphones”, “What You Hear” or “Stereo Mix”. The exact name may vary depending on your sound card but it’s usually one of these.

If you don’t see one of these, either your sound card doesn’t support it or you have to enable it first. In that case, right-click on the loudspeaker symbol in the system tray on the task bar and select “Open sound settings”. Click on “Sound control panel”, then go to the tab “Recording” and enable the device by right-clicking on it.

Click on “record” in Audacity and play the song.

Once the song is over, stop recording and click on “File/Export/Export to MP3″
