Here are all my spikes! Ranging from small to a few large. Plus studs that I will apply likely to the front of the shorts or jacket. Haven’t fully decided. I unscrewed one small spike and made a hole through a panel of a parcel box for it to go through. Now I can have it attached to a box when I spray paint and not worry about them falling over. Next up: Blue spray painted spikes progress

Halloween Costume: Punk Princess Peach
My next work in progress! I am starting early this year on Halloween. So far, I have: – ordered the wig (and wefts to sew in to add volume) – ordered the shoulder spikes (or various sizes) – ordered the boots, which will act as the base before adding the bow, etc – ordered the resin, dye and molds for the crown and shoes. Next up to be done: spray paint the spikes to make them blue!

Lack of Updates: Costume Frenzy for SakuraCon
Wow.... I am really behind on this. I got maybe 2 - 3 days into doing posts then dropped the ball. Just doing the work on costumes is busy enough. So I don't think I can even start up the daily posts again. But I will try to do some once and awhile....
Like when a have a bunch of good photos, or really excited about a certain item I have been working on..... like I am now! I made the start of the miss frizzle dinosaur shoes!!! They turned out way better then I ever imagined I could!

But I am doing a different dress, so the plan is to make them green instead. I wasn't sure on what colour to use from the dress but I thought using the green from the palm trees which there isn't a lot of would be good. So it won't blend in, but will still go with it. (See the dress below that will be made soon)
Almost a year ago, maybe more, I bought shoes from the thrift store that I thought had a good base shape. It had a square heel, and a flap in the front that would work for a base for the triceratops. I just had to remove a strap over the front. Which turned out to be quite easy.
Then I bought some green air dry molding clay and started outling the top of the flap of the shoe and down the front. Then shaped the scalloped top and side. Then tried to shape the eyes (or is it nostrils) and attached them to the shoes, trying to keep the proper shape. Not sure if I am 100% happy with the placement, but I think good enough.
Now that they have dried, it is time to fill cracks and paint the rest of the shoes the correct colour of green. Yay!!

SakuraCon Costume Frenzy: Day 2
So with the 100 days left to go, and 6 costumes to make and I decided to work everyday starting now. Better then putting it off even a week with all I have to do. I did my research, started a spreadsheet of everything I need to make, buy, etc, and even started work on the first costume!
I made copies of the pieces of the apron pattern for Nurse Joy (Pokemon) and made the alterations to the draft to make it fit the costume better. Plus cut out the pattern pieces to prep for when I ACTUALLY get the fabric.
I also glued on pendant backs to the pair of ammonite fossils I bought at the last Con so that I could turn them into earrings for the Miss Frizzle costume.

Costume Frenzy Day 1: 100 days to SakuraCon
So, 2 days ago now my friend and I realized that it is about 100 days left until SakuraCon 2014! Time to book tickets.... and think about costume ideas.
Well, that is when we went crazy.... we had too many ideas, and we couldn't part with a bunch of them. So here is the tally of costumes per person.
Me: Nurse Joy (Pokemon), Ariel (Little Mermaid) and Miss Frizzle and her Dinosaur dress (Magic School Bus)
Friend: Officer Jenny (Pokemon), Belle (Beauty and the Beast), Heimerdinger (League of Legends) and maybe Caitlyn (League of Legends)
Friend's Boyfriend: Fiddlesticks (League of Legends)
I am only wearing the Miss Frizzle costume to one panel though. As I went as the space version last year and I didn't want to do it the whole time this year.
My friend is buying the Officer Jenny outfit, but the rest is up to me to make..... Wish me luck!!
Switching to Wordpress?
After talking with a friend of mine, I have been starting to think about moving this to wordpress. I had issues with wordpress years ago, so when I started to think about starting up a new blog awhile ago I went looking for other alternatives. I noticed some people were using tumblr as a blogging platform as well and decided to give it a shot.
When my friend asked me why I chose tumblr, I couldn't really give a good reason besides "I wanted to try it out", "it works" and "wordpress annoyed me". She uses wordpress and likes it a lot, so I went back and looked at it again, and most of the things that tumblr does, they have now added similar features. So it isn't as bad as the last time I used it.
But is that enough to change? Is there anything really wrong with tumblr for the blog I am trying to do?
I really don't know for sure. It seems that most of the blogs that are doing similar things are using wordpress. Which makes me start to think that I might get a better audience there. But I still have some followers here, and get a few every month or so. So I don't really want to give up necessarily. But I am starting to be tempted, but I don't want to switch just because "everyone else is doing it". But I don't know if I have used tumblr as most other users do, and many people have a way different impression of it then when they think of wordpress. Typical blogs is not one of them.
So many things to think about.

My Vintage Singer's History
While looking up information on my newly acquired vintage singers (from my last post), I found this site: http://mysingerstory.com/ I was able to finally date my machines. You can also find the same information manually by going to http://www.singerco.com/admin-support/machine-serial-numbers. But later I also I found geographical area information at http://www.singermachines.co.uk/faq/where-was-my-antique-sewing-machine-made/ (Link to one letter information, but the page has link to page for 2 letter serial numbers as well).
The newer machine is from 1948, which had the 2 digit letter prefix “JC” in the serial number, seen above and below:
Using that 2 digit letter prefix I was able to find that the machine was from Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Québec, Canada.
The older machine was from 1914, which had a single digit letter prefix “F”, seen above and below:
Once again, I used this letter prefix to find that this one was from Clydebank, Scotland, UK. Machines with no letter prefixes are pre-1900s, or at least that is the information I have found. Most of those were from the same area, where the Singer company first began. Later Singer started to get factories in more locations and so starting in the 1900s they began using letter prefixes to specify the location the machines were issued from. I haven’t found any more real other information yet on the history of my particular machines besides the date issued and location. Nor have I found the approximate worth of either. But through the Singer site, I did find a page that listed the number of machines made of all models, which could help to the give an indication if they might be worth anything. Go to http://www.singerco.com/admin-support/machine-serial-numbers and select the one letter, or 2 letter. On the right side, there is a bunch of links to pdfs for the different series. Depending on the serial number after the prefix, it shows the quantity in one of the columns. For example for my F series machine: http://www.singerco.com/uploads/assets/pdf/SINGER_F_nos.pdf From another site, on a forum post I found that they say that the pre-1900s (or at least pre-1920) are the ones that are usually worth anything. Past that time most models issued had a lot more made. But there seems to be some exceptions to that though. I hope that this helps anyone looking for information on vintage singers. I had a long and hard time with mine because there were so many different websites out there with different information. Then most other blogs I found seemed to link to a page on the singer website that no longer existed (http://www.singerco.com/support/machine-serial-numbers which should now be http://www.singerco.com/admin-support/machine-serial-numbers).
I Could Be Splendid Once a Day Challenge
A friend asked me to join her and a bunch of other people for a Once a Day Challenge for her website / magazine I Could Be Splendid.
The idea was to create something every day for a set period of time ranging from between one week to one year. The creations can take the form of writing, photography, drawings, music, posters, knitting or whatever you can think of. The point of it was collaboration in a virtual space, creating a body of work and also partially documenting your life for that predetermined duration, as the work must be new and made each day. The timeline needed to be predetermined eg one week, 2 months, 1 year etc
My project will last a year consisting of knitting stuffed hexagons, also called "hexipuffs", with fingering weight yarn from old finished projects. But as time goes by I might run out of old yarn and may have yarn that will be purchased just for this project. After the year is done, the hexipuffs with be stitched together to create a quilt. I really wanted to knit something for this challenge and it just worked out that I already had the pattern stored away waiting for the right opportunity!
I will submitting a picture of the finished hexipuff each day, plus a small writeup on the type of yarn used, the project the yarn was originally from (optional), and the place(s) where I knitting it. But I may get lazy with the last one, as most of the time that place will be "on the bus" or "home". But most of the images will have a background that relates to where I was the time it was knit or at least finished. (Such as day #1 was knit at kits beach in one of the grass sections, so the picture has the hexipuff on the grass there.)
The pattern suggests more then 365 puffs, but I think 365 will likely be enough. Plus I might get carried away some days and make more then one!

Awhile ago I found this picture on tumblr. I feel completely in love with it. Since I had started to take an interest into learning to pattern drafting, I decided I would attempt to recreate this dress. As a beginner, this is more of an experiment then anything. So if anyone has any suggestions or helpful ideas, I would love to hear them!
What I have done so far though, is first I looked through my pattern drafting textbook to see what I could use from that to apply to different sections of the dress (type of skirt, vest, collar, sleeves, etc). This required me to figure out what all the components of the dress were, such has how many layers, what techniques to use to create the effect, etc. I have started to put together a list of all those techniques, plus links to inspirational images of real world examples. I am slowly gathering all this research material on the type of dresses that really would of been created in victorian times so I can relate it to what I see in the image. Which lead me to find the following:

I have also been finding gears that look as much like the ones in the image as possible. I have been mostly looking on etsy, and have only had partial luck with that. Most of the ones I have found are too small. Anyone else know where I might be able to get ones (and are not too ridiculous in price)?
It has been a fun process so far but I still haven't even begun to start work on a pattern. Pretty much the only thing I have done is buy base pieces to make the hat. (Yes, I will be making the hat too.) I think to actually start going I need motivation in order to do so, instead of just searching the web for more and more of the same thing. Hence I feel writing this will be just what I need. I will try my best to fully document my process, starting with a few posts coming soon on the research that I have done for different areas and techniques in the dress construction. Not sure what is the correct way, but like I said I am a beginner and using this to learn and experiment.

Halloween Costumes
I have so many post planned but no time to work on them. This time of year I also get really, really busy. Lots of stress with working on halloween costumes and trying to get them done in time. Plus I only have until friday when parties start, not until the monday.
This year I tried to finally do things right and not have a panic attack by trying to make a costume last minute. I planned on finally starting early this year. The bad things is.... I said I would make a bunch of other people's costumes too. Sigh..... plus even though I "started" early didn't mean I actually continued to work on it after I started.

For myself: Paper Bag Princess.
I have a roll of brown craft paper that I am using as my "fabric". Decided I wanted a bit more shape to the dress instead of just a paper bag so this is the pattern I decided on.
I will also thinking about making an identical one out of cotton, in case of rips or tears or any other accidents that might cause me to be "clothes-less". Either that or wear a slip.
For friend #1: Skeleton. She wanted something more fitted as she could never find one that fit right, that wasn't baggy. So thinking of making her a black catsuit (http://www.stretchy.org/ and http://www.patternschool.com/?page_id=642) and make skeleton bone appliques.
For friend #2: Melissa from Home Movies.

But decided that with the time constraint she might be able to find something at a thrift store. She has purple leggings already so I said for her to find a good sweatshirt and that I could alter it and dye it if not absolutely correct.
For friend #3: Honestly I don't even remember what this one is.... I know she told me but I can't think of it anymore.
The only ones that have stayed to this point is my own, and the skeleton costume. I found a way to make "catsuits" based on a certain person's measurements. Not just a store bought pattern. I will try to post about it at another point. It is going to look excellent (or at least I hope so).
Even though there is only 2 I am still stressed beyond belief. The skeleton costume is finally working but before it was being a real pain. Plus I still haven't put on the bones on the fabric yet. Plus my own costume turned out to be using the wrong kind of pattern to use paper for. I will find a way though!
The other funny thing is I also have a list for next halloween already too. Including my own costume (which is shocking as I never have one even a month in advance prepared).
