âItâs a little overwhelming, to say the least. I mean, my grandma always told me stories growing up, but I never imagined so many of them were based in truth, you know?â It took everything she had to not stop and sniff herself - again - at his affirmation. The first time Owen said he could smell her, she had been beyond embarrassed, thinking he meant she smelled bad. Even now, when he would nuzzle into her neck and take a deep whiff, she had to stop herself from asking if she smelled alright. Zodiacâs neck arched as he preened under the compliment, obviously feeling he was receiving his just dues. âHeâs certainly something,â Cass chided the stallion, though her tone was soft, her affection for him obvious. Her eyes moved around the stable, taking in the different residents in sight as a smile pulled up her lips. âI do, donât I? I havenât had any problems with any specifically, save for one. Heâs my newest rescue - a terrible case of neglect and abuseâŚâ Her heart hurt, remembering the state of the gelding when sheâd picked him up. âIâve had one of the vets from a few towns over coming out to check in on everybody, but when I heard you were settinâ up shop in town, I wanted to see if youâd mind taking over. Iâd rather have someone close by in case of emergencies.â As she spoke, she led them to a corner stall a bit away from the other horses and the hustle of the main aisle. Immediately she started cooing softly to the gelding inside, pleased when he trusted her enough to come to the stall door. âThis is Dusk. Still a work in progress,â Cass admitted, gesturing to the sunken ribs and protruding hip bones, âbut heâs been making leaps and bounds so far. I donât know if you do dentistry as well, but if you use manual tools, he could really use his teeth floated. I had a dentist out the other week, but he refused to use anything but electric tools, and Dusk wasnât having any of it.â
âStories, huh? What did she tell you?â More often than not, stories about his kind seemed false. Based on fictional books and damn movies. And... If they were truth, a lot of the time they came from a horsesâ mouth so to speak. He was intrigued plus maybe he could learn more about his kind from the stories. Heâd been a lone wolf for so long, more information couldnât hurt. Drew nodded as he quickly examined the horses, pleased that from a quick scan they all seemed in good health. Looked after too. He frowned slightly as she spoke about a rescue. Drew nodded and offered a rare smile. âOf course, Iâd be happy to take on this place. It would make sense, yes, to have a vet whoâs nearby. Saves someone coming into town and driving past me to get to you. Plus, I love horses.â He mused with one more stroke to the stallion before following Cass. Drewâs eyes widened as he looked at the poor, neglected horse. âYou poor baby, what did they do to you?â He whispered, setting his things down and giving his full attention to the animal. He was pleased that the gelding allowed him to examine, shaking his head and feeling his heart ache with each wrong doing he found. âIâm glad you rescued him, Cass.â He mused quietly before gently cooing and comforting the animal.  âI do indeed do dentistry and yes, I have manual tools.â Drew mused and gently examined the horsesâ teeth. He nodded. âWeâll get you in top shape, huh, Dusk? Youâll be winning all the girlâs hearts soon, donât you worry.â He smiled before turning to the woman. âIâm really glad that youâve rescued all these animals.â
