closed starter ft. @th3aterk1d's charity location. student center terrace context. mashup week planning !!
dennis had told himself, very firmly, that he was not going to make mashup week weird. it was a partner assignment, not a hostage negotiation, and charity st. james was not someone who needed him arriving with a full strategy like he was about to coach her through breathing. still, by the time they met, he had his laptop open on his knee, two song ideas typed out, one crossed through and a third underlined with slightly too much faith. “ before you say anything, this looks worse than it is, ” he said, glancing up at her with a small, guilty sort of smile. “ i swear i’m not trying to take over. ” which was true, mostly. he just happened to enjoy a plan the way some people enjoyed inner peace. “ i figured we could start with what you actually want to sing. or don’t want to sing, ” he added, turning the screen toward her a little. “ honestly, strong hatred is useful too. sometimes it’s easier to build around than indifference. ”
charity had arrived with exactly zero preparation. which, in her defense, wasn't unusual. she'd spent the walk over enthusiastically brainstorming song ideas, immediately forgotten all of them, gotten distracted by a dog, remembered one of them again, and then lost it a second time before she'd made it through the choir room doors. so when she spotted dennis already seated with his laptop open and what looked suspiciously like actual research, she couldn't help smiling. " oh, thank god. " the words slipped out before she could stop them. charity dropped into the seat beside dennis and peered at the screen. " i had my ideas in my head and then they just... " she waved her hand dismissively, signaling that they had just fluttered away, her smile widening into something sheepish. truthfully, she found the preparation more endearing than intimidating. dennis seemed to approach things with a level of thoughtfulness she could admire, it was nice. also convenient for someone who had shown up with approximately three thoughts in her head and half a granola bar in her hand.
" don't worry, i don't think you're taking over! " leaning closer, she scanned the songs they written down, her brows lifting with genuine interest. " wow, you already have options. " charity tapped thoughtfully against her chin, considering his question with a drawn out pause. her brow furrowing as she considered what she did and didn’t want to perform. “ no showtunes. no broadway ballads. ” nothing her mother had performed. “ the songs have to compliment each other, and not just technically. i guess it depends what story you want to tell? ” @stupidiots

Uptown Girls (2003) dr. Boaz Yakin
with the new directions safe and sound, because he succesfully managed to drag carter cortez and half his fanclub and wannabes into glee club, securing his legacy as the club's unofficial savior, aidan found himself bored again, and looking for a new challenge. or conquest, rather. leaning back in his chair, he scans the choir room for potentials, until his eyes fix on a blonde cheerleader, who he vaguely recognizes as a member who joined in his senior year, but who has definitely had a glow up since — or maybe he just hadn't checked her out properly before? also entirely possible. although most members had already left the choir room, she still appeared to be busy on her phone, and judging by the way she was scrolling, she was probably searching through spotify for mashup week ideas. aidan had delibaretly opted out of the assignment after he found out pairs would be randomized as some kind of team building excerise. he had no interest in being stuck with a bad pairing, especially when he already knew who he wanted to sing with. "you know, i've been thinking," he begins casually, running a hand through his hair as he stops beside her. "nasr and devereux love to go on and on about the importance of vocal chemistry, and keeping up with your partner musically, but does any of that really matter as much as they think it does? more than the visual? more than selling the story? i doubt it. and i doubt anyone actually enjoys watching those two eyefuck each other on stage as they belt out their lame showtunes. i don't think they'll do much better seperated either," he continues, letting out a soft chuckle as he leans against the nearest chair. "but you? i think you have a real shot at stealing the spotlight. at least... if it wasn't for the randomized pairings. don't know who you ended up with, but i honestly can't think of anyone in here beautiful enough to match your stunning visual. how very unfair." ( @th3aterk1d )
charity had been so focused on scrolling through playlists that she almost didn't notice someone had stopped beside her. almost. the voice was familiar enough that she glanced up automatically, expecting a question about mashup week or maybe a complaint about the random pairings. instead, she found aidan. her thumb froze halfway through a playlist titled ‘songs to dramatically stare out of a window to’ as she listened. at first, she was nodding along politely, because yes, nasr and devereux were admittedly a little intense about performance chemistry. charity’s brow dipped into a furrow as she attempted to make sense of what he was saying, and suddenly the conversation had taken a sharp turn toward her being beautiful. charity's brain promptly stalled. for a moment, she simply stared at him. was he flirting with her? no, that seemed unlikely. well, not entirely unlikely. but much like julian’s approach the other day in the library, charity was sure that aidan had no idea who she was. " oh. " so eloquent. " um… " her gaze dropped to her phone as heat immediately crept into her cheeks. she could feel herself smiling despite every attempt not to, which was frankly embarrassing. " that's really nice of you to say! " a small laugh slipped out of her. charity tilted her head, studying him suspiciously for approximately half a second before completely losing confidence in her ability to determine whether someone was teasing her. completely oblivious to any attempt of manipulation, charity’s smile widened as she set her phone aside and clasped her hands together. excited somebody wanted her opinion. “ i do think vocal chemistry matters. at least a little. if two people are singing a love song and one sounds completely heartbroken and the other sounds like they’d rather be watching paint dry… well, it would be awkward, right? " charity tucked a strand of blonde hair behind her ear, absently twisting the end of it between her fingers. truthfully, she liked the random pairings. everyone else seemed to hate them, but there was something exciting about being thrown together with someone she wouldn't normally perform with. it felt very glee club. messy, chaotic, occasionally disastrous, but usually fun. there was another part of what he'd said that her brain had finally caught up to. very slowly her eyes narrowed. " well now i'm curious! who would've been your first choice if the pairings weren't random? " @hcngover
who: sully & charity @th3aterk1d where: choir room
"do you know how to play this thing?" sully's fingers press on a few, random keys of the piano in front of them, really just making noise, rather than playing any particular tune. "they put me in piano lessons when i was a kid, but then my teacher just moved away one day, so i didn't have to go anymore." or so he'd been told. in reality, she'd had to drop sully as a student, because he'd been, in her words, 'unteachable', but his mom had decided to spin it a different way. "kinda sucks, 'cause i was good at it, too. could have probably been useful in here."
charity perked up immediately, looking far more impressed than the random key-pressing probably warranted. " wait, you took piano lessons? " she asked, eyes widening. she shoved her way onto the piano bench next to sullivan. " when i first started playing. i thought middle c was called that because it was the average note. " she nodded confidently and grinned, as if that were a perfectly reasonable thing to have believed. her fingers found a few keys, absentmindedly playing a soft little progression. twice a week from the age of five she had lessons, her fathers tutelage strict. charity had quickly learnt that it was one of the things she had to focus on, much like her vocal and dance lessons. math? well who needed that. at the mention of sully being useful in glee club, she brightened even further. “ well i'm just excited more cheerio’s joined. your presence is valuable enough i think! " @shcwtunes
julian genuinely hadn't meant to eavesdrop... at least not at first, but while he was organizing the sheet music by the piano, he couldn't help but overhear a couple of cheerios chatting with each other. normally, he would have completely tuned their conversations about utter nonsense out, but then he caught a very familiar name, followed by one of them mentioning that her mother was 'part of the original cast'. julian recognized her face, knew she had been part of the club before it was cool, but admittedly hadn't bothered to learn her name up until now, or know anything else about her really, other than the fact that she seemed to be a bit of a wallflower, comfortable swaying in the background. however, this little nugget of information suddenly made her a lot more interesting, enough to make her want to approach her when he spotted her in the library by herself. "you know, charity, most people would lead with that kind of information," he tells her, casually dropping into the chair beside the blonde girl. "your mom. how come you never told us?" ( @th3aterk1d )
charity nearly jumped when the chair beside her scraped softly against the library floor. her intense study had quickly dissolved into doodling in her notebook nevertheless she didn't expect an interruption. she blinked at julian once. twice. like her brain needed a second to catch up to the fact that he was suddenly sitting next to her, saying her name. charity was quite certain he didn’t know she existed. straightening instinctively, her fingers tightened around the edge of her notebook. “ oh … ” wide brown eyes flicked around them, checking he really meant her, before settling back on him with a small, apologetic smile. “ hi? ” there was a beat, maybe two. her mouth forming a small ‘o’ of realisation and a nod at the mention of her mother. charity let out a soft, nervous laugh, already shaking her head. “ i didn’t realise it was… important? ” she said carefully, like she was testing the word out. but it made sense, right? of course those who were passionate about musical theatre would be interested in her nepo baby status. her shoulders lifted in a tiny shrug. “ always thought it would be weird if i brought it up? like i’m… name-dropping. ” she paused, then added quickly, “ also, i didn’t know you knew i existed for it to come up in conversation. ” she glanced down at her open book, then back up at him, clearly flustered but trying to be polite. “ so… sorry. i guess? ” (@hcngover)

(﹙˓ 🎧 ˒﹚) whoa, did you just hear that voice? it's so recognizable that i have no doubt it's charity st. james. i don't really know much about them, but i heard they're a twenty-one year old dance & musicology major in their third year of study. people say that they're creative and effusive, but rumor has it that they're actually inconsistent and evasive, so i guess we'll never know the truth unless you live with them in hudson house. if you ask me, i think i'd describe them as the forgotten legacy, but their spotify wrapped should say more about them, in which green light by lorde, dancing on my own by robyn, and bejeweled by taylor swift are amongst their most played. but whatever, i wish them luck on their endeavors in new directions, cheerios, and student body government. i don't know how they have time for all of that, but i can't wait to see how this new school year treats them!
