Basically Ryland and Simon go to prison together and get thrown in the SM-13 together as well. Ryland, being a scientist, gets stuck in a radiation resistant suit and attached to what is essentially a shark cage on the outside of the iron lung. He's sent to grab the sample, and while the eel is trying to drag the iron lung down, it breaks off Grace's cage and eats him. Grace's form is then used to try and get Simon to give up and abandon the black box.
