Remember: you don’t have to choose.

You can be grateful that we are getting an on-screen, canon completion to Good Omens, AND devastated that the time we had anticipated getting to spend with our favorite idiots has been slashed by 75%.

You can acknowledge how close the series obviously came to being canned entirely and give a sigh of relief, AND weep for the storylines and flashbacks that will be chiseled away or cut entirely.

You can logically accept that a good movie can accomplish a hell of a lot in ninety minutes, and Good Omens will have a massive leg-up because all of the establishing elements are already there and they can basically jump right into the action, AND feel disappointment and sorrow — grief, honestly — for the loss of what we have been anticipating for so long.

Good and bad, light and shadow, joy and pain — they aren’t mutually exclusive. One does not cancel out the other. They can coexist…and sometimes they must. Don’t try to stamp out one side or the other, either in your own heart or in someone else.

Feel your big feelings. Give them space to breathe. Feelings are neutral; it’s what you do with them that counts.

So hang in there. We’re all in this together 💛

fun musical bit about this scene!:

the piece that the car is playing (the "classical music that stays classical music") is a tone poem, saint-saëns' danse macabre. it's a super famous piece that you've probably heard before and is associated with all things spooky. but it's not just spooky bc it sounds spooky: it's spooky bc it tells a story! a tone poem is a piece of music evokes a poem, short story, landscape, etc. in short, it's a piece of music that's describing or outlining something.

danse macabre tells the story of the devil, who every year on the stroke of midnight on halloween plays his fiddle to raise the dead. the dead dance for him until the following dawn, where they return to their graves until the next year. (musically it does a lot of cool things to reflect this: there's 12 notes at the beginning representing the 12 strokes of midnight, and the frequent use of a specific musical interval called the tritone. in the medieval period the tritone was also called diabolus in musica, literally meaning "the devil in music" bc of how dissonant it sounded to listeners at the time. it also quotes the dies irae chant as well!)

so the fact that it's what the car chose to play is SUPER cute. bc it's classical (technically it's from the romantic period, but w/e), like aziraphale wants, but it's also reminiscent of crowley. bc i bet the car knows just how much aziraphale loves crowley, too. it's a really subtle nudge that the car knows both of them and it's like the car is finding a musical middle for them both, almost.

it's also a subtly brilliant choice bc in the flashback prior, aziraphale said that crowley asked to meet aziraphale in the graveyard at midnight. just like the devil met the dead on halloween.

Also, the whole goddamn season has a theme of resurrection. The pub, the zombies, Crowley bringing that businessman back to life in the last episode, the second coming. So this song is very, very fitting for the theme of the season.

Neil: Crowley actually is really smart and he’s the same character. He goes through, you know, an awful lot, but he’s the same person at the beginning on the wall at the Garden of Eden as he really is at the end of the story. He’s gone through it all. Aziraphale actually has to change. 

He’s like somebody who, you know, for years has just been sort of part of a group, part of a political party, part of something that he kind of believes in and trusts, and now he’s starting to realize that actually that they’re kind of deeply fucked. Maybe he can sort it out. Maybe they’re not really deeply fucked because they can’t be, because he’s on their side. And he actually has a much more painful journey. He makes more mistakes. 

Crowley knows how appaling Hell is, so that never really changes for him, and he knows that he likes being on Earth. He is against the Armageddon from the word go. He thinks the world is great and it’s comfortable and it has restaurants and wine; it has a few strange things, you know, he’s never been able to get anything other that The Best of Queen to play on radio, but it’s a great place to be. 

Aziraphale kind of knows that, but he also believes that Heaven and Gabriel, they kind of know what they’re doing - don’t they? So he’s the one that goes through the journey.

Interviewer: I mean, Crowley has lived a life of bravery, right, if it’s a metaphor for a human existence, he’s the guy who put himself out there, he’s fallen down, he’s got back up, he knows what it feels like to be alive. Aziraphale’s lived a very guarded life, and as a result, he fears, you know, both the good and the bad so he really is a metaphor for the rest of us trying to figure out who we are.

David: Yes, ‘cause Crowley was once an angel too, remember. He’s an angel who fell from grace, so he knows he’s amongst wankers to begin with. It is really about… dealing and surviving and if only he could make the scales fall from his mate’s eyes they’d be in a much better position. So yes, part of what Crowley’s so excited to do is kind of make him sort of face reality and live with it.
