Now, your gut reaction that that’s the most ridiculous-ass exaggeration you’ve ever heard is, as they say, not wrong. Yes, make fun of this fool and the platoon-sized element of pigs that apparently stalks him while he sleeps or something, by all means.

But a big trend I’ve noticed is that the people turning this into the hot new meme are acting as if hogs … aren’t? … a serious problem? Which as both a country kid and an environmentalist, I find … concerning.

I really feel like I shouldn’t have to say this, but “Ha-ha, problems I can’t see aren’t real and an ongoing ecological disaster that’s been tearing North American ecosystems to shreds for the past 500 years is f u n n y” is a pretty bad take?

i think the way he phrased it made it seem like he was pulling that story out of his ass and that is why it was made into a meme. but by all means if it is an actual problem then i’m pretty concerned as to why that’s a problem that the homeowner has to solve themselves.

So: Pigs are not native to the Americas, but were brought over from Europe during the initial period of colonization, as livestock. Many of these pigs escaped, and found an environment wherein the native predators weren’t really prepared to deal with them, and went hog wild (as is, I’m sure you can imagine, their wont).

All individuals of the porcine race, even domestic pigs, are frighteningly intelligent social animals who are voracious omnivores and perpetually horny, and it doesn’t take very long at all for an emancipated pig to remember its roots and go feral, so wild hogs will absolutely dominate any ecosystem they come into and out-forage, out-fight, and outbreed the native fauna while shredding the native flora. In addition to being uncannily intelligent, they’re also super territorial and they can and will gang up on you and wreck your shit if they percieve you as being on “their” turf. Children, pets, livestock, etc. all live in terror of The Porcine Menace.

And the reason why it’s something that homeowners have to be concerned about how to deal with on their own is because of just how e n o r m o u s the problem is. As of last February according to the USDA’s census, the distribution of breeding populations of invasive feral hogs in the US looks like this:

jesus my county is purple too. so are you saying that the problem is so enormous that, even if the cities/counties are intervening, it’s not enough? why…have i not heard about this

I honestly haven’t a damned clue why people don’t know about this; I wasn’t even aware that people didn’t know about it until this became a meme a couple days ago. We had assemblies about it in elementary school.

One thing that just adds to the surrealness of all this is that dude in the tweet up there actually makes kind of a good point, it’s just worded in the absolute worst possible way. “I need to keep a ranch rifle on hand due to the infestation of aggressive invasive omnivores in my area, and many proposed ‘assault weapon bans’ would include ranch rifles” is a totally valid point. Dude just tried to say it in CHUDese instead of English.
