Jackson didn’t get his first movie role until he was 46.

Morgan Freeman landed his first movie role at age 52. Kathryn Bigelow only reached international success when she made The Hurt Locker at age 57. Grandma Moses didn’t begin her painting career until age 76. Louise Bourgeois didn’t become a famous artist until she was 78. Whatever your dream is, it is not too late to achieve it. You aren’t a failure because you haven’t found fame and fortune by the age of 21. Hell, it’s okay if you don’t even know what your dream is yet. Even if you’re flipping burgers, waiting tables or answering phones today, you never know where you’ll end up tomorrow. Never tell yourself you’re too old to make it.

Never tell yourself you missed your chance.

Never tell yourself that you aren’t good enough.

You can do it. Whatever it is.

Question for pole students/teachers

I went to a workshop today at a studio I had never visited before. As luck would have it, I was the only person who was attending who was not already a student there. The studio was beautiful, with white walls and these lovely wooden floors that I would have taken home for my kitchen. It was only as I sat and waited that I noticed– there were no mirrors.

“This is a judgement free zone,” the owner explained. “If you can’t do something, it doesn’t mean you can’t do it, it just means you’re not there yet.” I nodded, but I’ve been unsure ever since. I’ve always considered the pole community to be (majoritively) a welcoming, non-judgemental group of people.

Now, I understand the lack of mirrors. When I did dance, I hated mirrors. They showed me how much worse I was than everyone, how stupid I looked. I can see why people in pole may not like it for the same reasons, but–

I need mirrors. I need to see if my foot is sickled when I don’t feel it, I need to see if my hips aren’t open enough, if my splits are flat enough, etc. There are things I need to see if I can’t feel them or have them explained to me.

What do y’all think? Are mirrors only around for either egomanics or to beat people down, or do they serve true purpose these people are missing out on?

Our studio didn't have mirrors when we moved locations and I remember getting so frustrated. I don't have the best body awareness(especially if I'm upside down) but so often I felt like I was doing a move right just to hear that I wasn't or that my toes weren't pointed or my lines weren't sharp, etc. How do you correct something when you can't feel or see what your doing wrong?

I'm sure that owner has the best intentions, but I do think she is also hindering a portion of her students. If she is concerned with with people feeling defeated, maybe focus on what everybody is doing right and suggest how to be better. Critiques don't have to be a bad thing.
