This notion of comfort strikes Devo as utterly absurd. The first twenty-some years of his life were spent in spirited pursuit of the near exact opposite, forcing his body and mind beyond their natural boundaries in accordance with the will of his guardians, all the while cramming the part of himself that would object into ever smaller boxes. His welfare was never a concern, let alone a deciding factor in anything. Now Beck is telling him his success is dependent on his feelings? How totally bizarre.

But as Devo is quickly learning, things out here are not like the Parish. Out here, he can choose for himself. This does not always make things easier. Just different. He thinks back to the first landwellers: those ancient ancestors who dragged themselves out of the ocean, the only home they’d ever known, in favor of a hostile new world with no guarantee that they’d even survive. Devo briefly wonders if it hurts to grow gills.
