watching history repeat itself as the united states and countries across the world descend into fascism in an all too familiar pattern of events
star wars (1977)
I learned in a Latin Studies class (with a chill white dude professor) that when the Europeans first saw Aztec cities they were stunned by the grid. The Aztecs had city planning and that there was no rational lay out to European cities at the time. No organization.
When the Spanish first arrived in Tenochtitlan (now downtown mexico city) they thought they were dreaming. They had arrived from incredibly unsanitary medieval Europe to a city five times the size of that centuryâs london with a working sewage system, artificial âfloating gardensâ (chinampas), a grid system, and aqueducts providing fresh water. Which wasnât even for drinking! Water from the aqueducts was used for washing and bathing- they preferred using nearby mountain springs for drinking. Hygiene was a huge part if their culture, most people bathed twice a day while the king bathed at least four times a day. Located on an island in the middle of a lake, they used advanced causeways to allow access to the mainland that could be cut off to let canoes through or to defend the city. The Spanish saw their buildings and towers and thought they were rising out of the water. The city was one of the most advanced societies at the time.
Anyone who thinks that Native Americans were the savages instead of the filthy, disease ridden colonizers who appeared on their land is a damn fool.
Theyâve also recently discovered a lost Native American city in Kansas called Etzanoa It rivals the size of Cahokia, which was very large as well.
Makes me happy to see people learn about the culture of my country :D
Also, please remember that the idea of a nomadic or semi-nomadic culture being âless intelligentâ, âless civilizedâ (and please unpack that word) was invented by people who wanted to make a graph where they were on the top.
Societies that functioned without 1) staying exclusively in one location or 2) having to make complicated, difficult-to-construct tools to go about their daily lives⊠were not somehow less valid than others.
This is why I fucking hate it when Europeans make jokes about how they have âmore historyâ than the Americas. âThis church is older than your country hahaha.â Actually, itâs older than the country you put there, massacring millions in the process, but go off, I guess.Â
on a scale of 1 to john oliver commissioning a competing picture book about mike penceâs rabbit with a storyline about same sex marriage and democracy and tolerance, releasing that book a day before the release of mike penceâs picture book, and then donating proceeds from the book to the trevor project and aids united, how (righteously) petty are you
the got finale becomes 100 times funnier when you realize that the reason bronn left the dragon pit was because lena and jerome used to be together and now their contracs say they cant do scenes together lmao

Johnny Cashâs first wife was black. Totally erased in the movie.
the Man In Black was not having your racist bullshit, and his children wonât let you piss on his grave.
I just
Heâs the Man in Black. He was a vocal proponent of prison reform and prison rights. Half of his catalog is social justice. Why do you think he toured PRISONS it wasnât just Folsom!
Johnny Cash was Punk As Fuck
Man In Black by Johnny Cash. Johnny Cash always wore black clothes, and he wrote this song to help explain why: âI wear the black for the poor and the beaten down, livinâ in the hopeless, hungry side of town, I wear it for the prisoner who has long paid for his crime, but is there because heâs a victim of the times.â
Johnny Cash literally wore his protest.

WHATâS HAPPENING IN VENEZUELA? // long post, but worth the read.
So, itâs official. The Constituent was approved. In the past 18 years, aka since Hugo ChĂĄvez was elected President of Venezuela, the government has altered election results to their benefit so it really isnât strange to us that they would do it this time. However, we didnât think they would be so shameless as to alter them this much. According to Tibisay Lucena (President of the Electoral Power) there was a total of 8.089.320 votes in favor of this Constituent, and these numbers simply donât add. This past 16th of July a referendum was held where voters would have to answer to 3 questions about whether or not they agreed to move forward with the Constituent; the results? 6.492.381 votes made in Venezuela and 693.789 votes outside the country, meaning a total of 7.186.170 against the Constituent. While these two results add a total of 15.275.490 votes that fit under the 19.805.002 of venezuelans summoned to vote, hereâs why yesterdayâs number makes no sense:
8.191.132 votes in favor of Hugo ChĂĄvez (Presidential elections of 2012). - While these numbers were most certainly altered, itâs no lie that at the time ChĂĄvez had a huge group of supporters, called Chavistas.
7.505.338 votes in favor of NicolĂĄs Maduro (Presidential elections of 2013). - These elections were made because of the recent death of ChĂĄvez, who knew he didnât have much time left so he decided to brainwash all of his supporters to think Maduro was the best option for president. May I add, NicolĂĄs Maduro doesnât have any kind of educational degree, he literally was a bus driver before becoming president. Totally unqualified man. All his votes were bought or made up.
5.599.025 votes in favor of the PSUV (Parliamentary elections of 2015) - PSUV stands for Partido Socialista Unido de Venezuela and would roughly translate to âUnited Socialist Party of Venezuelaâ, I think. These elections were a big deal to the oposition (represented by the MUD aka âDemocratic Unity Roundtableâ), because we owned the National Assembly with 112 deputies (67%) and 7.707.422 votes (56,2% of the total votes)
I think Iâve made my point as to why yesterdayâs result of 8.089.320 votes is nothing but blatant lies, except thatâs not all! Turns out that, in these past days between the referendum (July 16) and yesterday (July 30), any person making a buy that required a fingerprint scan or using a âcarnet de la patriaâ (an id recently made to âease the access to social programsâ) would count as a vote in favor of the Constituent. This government spends so much time looking for ways to stay in power because they know that the majority of the country is against them, and obviously they wonât acknowledge that theyâre not as âlovedâ as they used to be, or else they wouldnât ignore the protests that have been going on for the past 121 days with at least 128 confirmed deaths (17 of them happened only yesterday).
Now Iâm going to explain why this Constituent being approved is literally confirming weâre living under a dictatorship.
Venezuela becomes a communal state.
Private enterprise will be eliminated.
All private sector employees become public employees.
The right to private education will be eliminated. From preschool to universitary sector, including adoctrinamiento polĂtico on all levels of education.
Means of social communication will be at the service of communist power.
University autonomy will be eliminated.
Municipalities will be eliminated.
The president of the republic is the only one able to choose governors and mayors, without taking into account the opinion of the people.
The presidential term will last between 20 and 30 years, with chance of indefinite reelection, applicable to the current president.
The movement of citizens inside of the country will be limited, meaning youâll need an official permit to travel around Venezuela.
International departures will be limited, meaning youâll need an official permit to get out of the country.
All powers, public and private, disappear.
The armed force disappears, becoming fighting bodies integrated into the governmentâs party.
All political parties will be eliminated.
The right to protest will be eliminated.
Opposing or thinking differently than the government will be a crime of betrayal to the motherland, meaning freedom of speech disappears.
Article 350 of the actual Constitution, that establishes you can disown the authority when the Constitution is violated, will be eliminated.
Authorities can break into your house without a warrant.
Peopleâs houses canât be sold or inherited, becoming propiety of the state.
Life guarantee will be restricted, the regime has now custody of peopleâs lives.
This is really serious, and I wish more people were talking about it because what Iâm doing right now will be literally considered a crime as soon as the National Constituent Assembly enters in action. I know you guys may think that reblogging, retweeteting and regraming some posts is not gonna help us, but trust me, they will. The government is putting up an act of âeverythingâs fine, weâre the same 1st world country we were +20 years agoâ and weâre not. Weâre being killed, tortured, starved, lied to and so much more horrifying things are being done to and against us. Let the world know whatâs really happening in Venezuela, and whoâs the real villain in the story.
Iâm not gonna add more to this because it explains very well whatâs going on in Venezuela.
My mom wrote to me today and told me âyou and your brother can never come back.â
We managed to get my brother out a month ago and Iâve never been more grateful. He was so close to staying behind and Iâm just crying because I donât know if Iâll ever see the family and friends that didnât have that opportunity.
Malala is spending her 20th birthday fighting for girlsâ education in Iraq
Itâs been a big week for Malala Yousafzai.
On Friday, the womenâs rights advocate announced from her newly launched Twitter account that sheâd graduated high school.
âGraduating from secondary school ⊠is bittersweet for me,â she wrote. âIâm excited about my future, but I know that millions of girls around the world are out of school and may never get the opportunity to complete their education.â
Yousafzai, not one to waste any opportunity, is already at work trying to help other girls have the same chance.Â
On Tuesday, she celebrated her 20th birthday a day early in Iraq by way of her âGirl Power Trip,â an initiative that involves Yousafzai traveling around the world to talk to girls who have struggled trying to access education. Read more (7/12/17)
