Fuck you duffers.
You can pry internalised homophobia, repressed gay, completely and utterly in love and devoted to his best friend, the leader, the heart, anti conformity, cringe fail loser, Mike Wheeler from my cold dead hands.
worst part about loving mike wheeler post-finale is that all the slander against him is 100% justified and I really don’t have any excuse other than “what he could’ve been”
miwi :3🖍️
Fixed it
rest in peace mike wheeler. you could've been the best internalized homophobia rep that i've ever seen with my own two eyes
the duffers may have written for mike to be straight, but mike the character is gay and in love with will. the script may say one thing, but mike wheeler, who exists in the universe of stranger things and has lived through the apocalypse—who isn’t a fictional person played by an actor and is instead a real person in this world—that mike wheeler? he is gay.
So the Stranger Things queerbaiting was malicious and calculated and they truly aimed to harm us for rooting for Mike and Will. Our love for the ship was just “noise” to them. And yet, they were the ones who made Will fall in love with Mike. They were the ones who paralleled Mike and Will’s rain fight to a scene between two gay characters from another show. They were the ones who wrote Mike and El’s relationship like… that. Not just bland but also toxic and emotionally neglectful on Mike’s part. They made it so Mike was a terrible boyfriend to El whilst simultaneously showcasing how he, despite also being nasty to Will after season 2, would always go to him and apologize and seek his closeness again afterwards, something he never did with El. They wrote their show like this. They put these things in the show, not us.
I can honestly go on writing and this would be a gigantic post, so I will stop here. But the point is that the way they played with their fans, many of whom are young queer people, was cruel and calculated. They actively wanted to hurt their fans for being “loud” about their love for these characters and for picking up on the hints they were planting themselves to build expectation for this ship, which I guess now all of it was just to showcase Mike being Will’s gay awakening and nothing more. And to laugh at our faces for hoping something would happen between these characters.
This is by far the most cruel queerbait I’ve ever witnessed and honestly I need someone in the media to publicly call them out on this. They could have told the fans directly that Byler wasn’t a plan for them (do what the Wednesday writers did for Wenclaire fans!) but no, they decided not to. Instead they built more toward Byler in season 5 volume 1 (instead of spending that screen time on their “central couple”) just to lead us on one last time time before spending the second half of the season throwing Mike and El in our faces. They led us on on purpose. They did all of this on purpose. Just to hurt us. They need to be called out for this.
worst part is that they genuinely ruined a character that was loved by many queer, self repressed people (including me!) and gave him the saddest ending of all. even will has a happier one, despite not getting the love of his life in the epilogue. mike is just. left there. all alone and sobbing.
it honestly feels like such a slap in the face. taking a very much canonically suicidal, emotionally depressed boy and making him end up away from his friends, all alone in the basement and sobbing as he thinks about the most important person in his life slipping through his fingers.
such a slap in the face for every fan whos loved him so much.
Ok, so let me see if I got this correctly:
When Mike says "it's not my fault you dont like girls!" he actually meant it? In like "if you dont like girls youre a loser" type of situation? In like "you better start thinking about girls like the rest of us, otherwise youre gay, and thats a no no"??
When he doesnt hug HIS BEST FRIEND at the airport after what, a year without seeing him, its cause hes disgusted? Why would he, if he has no clue about Will's "crush"? If not disgust then what? Cause he hugs Dustin and Lucas just fine, why wouldnt he hug HIS BEST FRIEND?
And when he treats Jane like shit is cause he loves her? When he cant say I Love You back to her is supossed to be... Romantic? Healthy? Was Mike and Jane relationship supossed to be healthy????
Every romantic tension, every "brush of an elbow, touch of a knee" meant fucking nothing? Every lip stare and longing was bad acting? Bad directing? All the signs, all the hints, all the teasing that the general audience would let slide but the queer people would clock on were just little accidents? Little off-scrypt oopsie daisies?
Then Im never rewatching the show again? Cause Mike just sucks and Will and Jane deserve to suffer for nothing??
I couldn't help myself lmaoo
Do I leave it in 👀
A real Byler never speaks ill of my baby
god i love mike so much i literally cant believe they did him like this 😭 if i see any mike hate from now on, i totally understand it but i cannot relate. in my mind that is a horrendously repressed boy with serious emotional issues jfc. him sobbing and putting his book next to will's and staring at it like that may have meant something different for the writers but i'll always know what it means. i want to hug him so bad oh my god im feeling MATERNAL
