I've seen people hating Barnaby on reddit I mean people don't have to like every character to be fair
I deleted reddit a long time ago but I am aware of the barnaby hate in general. A lot of people can't stand him because he tends to be rude to the other characters and jokes at their expense at times. But honestly, some people don't understand his character at all.
I feel like people assume he's gonna be a tadc Jax type character which in theory, makes sense because they both are the "funny one" and they constantly annoy and bother some of the other characters and are rude.
But having said that, Jax doesn't gaf about anyone and is horrible to the people he does gaf about.
Barnaby on the other hand does care about people. He cares about Wally and Howdy and Julie and Poppy and even Eddie.
He's always taking the time to listen to Howdy talk about his family and is always lending an ear to him, he's always playing around with Julie and joking around with her and joining in on her games and stuff. Yeah he tends to make some jokes at her expense but it's not 100% of the time he's doing that. For the most part they get along pretty well. With Poppy (we only really see their interaction in the home warming update) they do have their silly lil banter but it's never at her expense. Even with Eddie, he may push him around a bit and is a bit more rude to him, he's not a complete asshole. He was literally the only one who checked up on him in the "Eddie's big lift" audio. Frank didn't even check in on him. And with Wally, he cares about him a whole lot. He knows that he struggles with communication and being able to understand things and barnaby is so patient with him and puts effort in helping him in social situations. In the home warming update, he made sure to give Wally a chance to speak for himself when he would ask each neighbor about how to make Home happy during home warming. I know that I heard people say that he treats Wally like a child or incapable but honestly, I disagree. I feel like everyone else in the neighborhood sometimes (not all the time and not everyone OFC) treats him like a child or incapable while Barnaby does try to teach him how to get out of his shell and learn how to interact in situations.
With barnaby, yeah he does fit the role of "The Funny One" but with him, he's actually genuine about it. He may go overboard a bit and push boundaries but he's nowhere near Jax's level.
Jax is the type of character that wants to be the funny one but he's not. He tries pushing boundaries way too far and doesn't give a shit if it's funny to anyone else. But when someone does something at his expense to him, he flips out. At least with Barnaby he can laugh at himself and joke along with it.
I can see why people don't like Barnaby due to him being rude to Eddie and Frank. But like there's a whole lot more to him that I feel like people tend to ignore. And besides. There's a whole bunch of updates left that we haven't seen yet. Who knows where his character arc will lead to.
