Freelance Editing!

Hi everyone!

This week I am spruiking my freelance editing work! I have been running my own freelance editing business for ten years now and I am always happy to take on new clients. Given the amount of amazing writers on Tumblr, I thought it was about time I opened my door here, too! I have experience editing for individuals, as well as boutique and large publishers including: Brolga Publishing, United Media, and ANZFTA.

As a writer, I know writing is an incredibly personal endeavour and my edits always aim to be kind, measured and friendly, while ensuring that your piece is the best it can be!

What will you edit?

I am happy to edit any written work, both non-fiction and fiction. This includes (but is not limited to) articles, theses, essays, reviews, pitches, website content, short stories, fanfiction, novellas and novels. Please feel free to email me if you are unsure that I will take your project on – chances are, I will be happy to help you! I am always especially excited to work with self-publishing authors!

Are you submitting to a publication that has a specific house style (specific requirements for spacing, use of punctuation, preferred spelling, etc)? Great! Send along a link to the house style requirements with your work and I will ensure your pieces fits within their guidelines.

Looking to change from American English to British English and vice versa? I am always happy to help transfer your work from one spelling system to another, along with providing a detailed style sheet to help you with future work!

At the moment, I am only accepting English-language work.

What are your rates?

Smaller projects (essays, short stories, pitches etc): 1 cent per word for copy editing and 2c per word for structural editing.

Larger projects, like full novels, will be priced at the time I receive the project. I am always happy to work with your budget and requirements.

Prices are in Australian dollars (AUD). I submit invoices through Paypal.

What do you get?

I offer two services: Copy Editing and Structural Editing.

Copy Editing: this is purely for spelling and grammatical errors, best for those who have already done a thorough edit of their work, or are submitting shorter pieces (such as pitches) and simply need someone to give it a second look.

Structural Editing: this is by far the most labour intensive form of editing. In addition to spelling and grammatical corrections, a structural edit will provide advice on the composition of the text itself (plot, themes, characterisation, flow, point of view/voice, pace, and dialogue) to ensure your work has the best narrative flow possible. This includes advice on sections of text to remove, rearrange and/or reword (with suggestions on possible rewording from the editor). Structural editing also comes with the option to edit your manuscript into the appropriate format for publication (please note that many publishing houses have different manuscript guidelines).

Both editing options come with: -a .pdf of the finished edit -a detailed author’s letter explaining why certain changes were made, recommendations for further revisions (if necessary), and a thank you for the chance to read your work -a style sheet, outlining spelling and punctuation edits

Man.. it really sucks when suddenly you’re thrown into the group that open-season has been declared on.  Not such a great feeling, I’m sure.  Though I do have to ponder why rekkanator thinks that this, only now, is tearing apart the community.. yet it certainly wasn’t before.  The whole ‘shoe on the other foot’ thing, I suppose.

I’ve gotta say, I’m finding this new rule on ponyislandburnbook to be most amusing.

I’d appreciate it if you didn’t try to reword things. When I refer to “things tearing apart the community”, I mean the community ripping into each other and you know that real well, I’m sure. Because there’s no other target at the moment. Nothing on PI to discuss. So let me clear up a few things:

Primary objective: Criticizing the current status of the game and its management. Pressing for transparency, and letting others know that you CAN voice your concerns.

Things that are NOT objectives of mine: Slamming other users. Not even staff. There are plenty I don’t care for, but I am not going to name and shame them.

Things I have done which may be perceived as slamming other users: Disagreeing with them, not understanding why they can handwave the site’s issues, posting criticisms of their arguments.

It feels like you guys are attributing various burn book posts to me, and various posts by other users, that I did not make myself. 

You’ll notice that I’ve not petitioned Burn Book Admin to take down that post, and neither do I intend to. The post is referring to something I did once no longer on the team (also, have I ever publicly said “was kicked out”, or are you drawing from confidential, inside knowledge, OP?), and I don’t think that technically flies.

I am reasonably sure this whole OP is a reference to my Tumblr fight with is-chimera in 2012 or thereabouts. I could dig around for the posts in my Tumblr, probably. Point is, the argument happened once I’d left. What’s being said here isn’t a criticism of my current service (or lack thereof), and doesn’t even have anything to do with whatever their problem is with me now.

It’s just someone who can’t forget about the incident, and wasn’t even willing to try to talk to me privately and ask me to tone it down, or explain that it hurt them. Let it remain, and let it be.

I only just saw this but uh, I didn’t post that. I know you’re not naming me specifically but that last bit there it’s hard not to assume that’s me you’re talking about. I think the whole burn book thing is just silly, but power to those that it makes “feel better” or whatever it does. Still, you know I apologized to you and I admitted I fucked up. I wouldn’t spread shit about you because you know I don’t hate you actually. I’m still hurt sure but you’re going to be you and take the time you need to figure stuff out. If you want to believe I’m vindictive then that is your own thing, but I’m not.

I don't think I'm ever going to win a DVS. I've been on PI for years and participated in events but I'm not good enough at anything to win one. :(

I don’t usually respond but I just wanted to say you shouldn’t give up. I’ve been on PI for 9(?) years now and have never won a DVS myself. The DVS I do have was a slot gifted to me by a friend who figured she had enough and wanted to see someone who didn’t have any get one. And yes, quite a few of my friends are on the staff so that “it’s rigged” bullshit isn’t true either. People win because they try hard, and often times have talent or were super creative. With the amount of users on PI and the amount of talent on PI it doesn’t surprise me that I’ve never won a DVS, and it doesn’t surprise me that more people don’t either. TL;DR- don’t give up, go in to have fun and look at winning as a cool consolation prize

This is just plain idiocy. Every fucking character in WoW is shipping fodder. There are millions of ships in the WoWverse. Hating a character for the actions of the fandom is no okay. Especially if it’s a female character. It’s just grasping for straws. Shipping is going to happen, and Jaina often gets the short end of the stick because people constantly ship her with every male character she comes in contact with. So no. That should not be a valid reason for being hated.

Mary Sue

Okay I constantly see this argument and at this point, is just mindless repetition. How is Jaina a mary sue? The short answer is: she isn’t. Jaina is in no way, shape or form a mary sue. Is her character well-rounded? Well, not really. Does that make her a mary sue? No. 

There are many characters in the WoWverse who could fit under the “mary sue” umbrella. But Jaina is not one.

She actually has more backstory than a lot of WoW characters. Her story from the days of Warcraft, then in Wrath of the Lich King, and then in Pandaria. She was really a major party of a lot of those stories.
