Carol Danvers has been many things, a pilot, a solider, an Avenger, an enemy of the state, but most importantly, she’s been a hero. During a fight between a multidimensional, omnipresent supervillain and the Avengers the team had their consciousnesses scattered across the multiverse, leaving nothing but empty shells. Carol had the misfortune, or maybe fortune, of landing here, in the body of this world’s Carol. Now, with the usual strategies of how to get home exhausted she has to face her future in an unfamiliar world currently going through one of the worst fights of her life. How will she explain her situation? Who will trust her? And what has this world’s Carol Danvers left her responsible for?

SOKOVIA ACCORDS: Carol was Pro-Accords the first time and she saw the destruction it caused. Knowing that in her world things ended with the Accords all but dead and an unforgivable amount of people hurt or dead all she wants now is to find a solution and stop the fighting as quickly as possible.

Carol leaned back watching Emma closely from across the table. There was something unnerving about the younger woman, something that reminded her of Mar-Vell and the Kree mixed with the army wives who used to give her shit when she lived on air force bases. “So you...read minds?” Carol wasn’t sure how to react to the information, would her thoughts make Emma angry at her? She’d never been particularly good at controlling her inner monologue. “How does that work? If you don’t mind me asking.”

Carol looked over at Peter, tears still welling in his eyes. It hurt something deep inside her to see him this broken. This little boy who she thought of as practically her younger brother. He was so strong, so determined, and so very broken.  “Death is a blessing and a curse. Something gained and something lost. A release and a regression.”  She stared out from the rooftop across the city. Peter was hemorrhaging loses and she couldn’t stop it, Carol desperately wished there was something she could do.  “What do you need Peter?”

      Death had never felt like a blessing to Peter, even when it came to Thanos’ death. He was relieved that he got to live life, but being blipped had felt like nothing. It wasn’t death in the same way that his Uncle Ben or Aunt May had experienced death, at least he didn’t think or hope that they had. He wanted them to reunite in their deaths. To be together again. “How is it a blessing?” His voice cracked as he asked, not understanding how it could be considered such. “I just need…I need for people to stop. Stop dying.”

Carol put an arm around Peter and hugged him up against her, she wasn’t really the motherly type, not to mention she was only about a decade older than the younger boy. But she considered her role as Peter’s older sister figure to be absolutely sacred. “I know...I know it must feel like you just keep losing things...losing people. Losing people never stops hurting, it never stops breaking pieces off your soul, I know right now it must feel like your entire life is just one loss after another.” She sighed “You’re talking to someone with way too much experience on that. I think...I really think that the best thing we can do is keep trying to live up to their hopes for us, to keep trying to meet their expectations. Maybe not because one day we’ll see them again. Certainly not because otherwise we’d be disappointing them, or letting them down. But the people who love us, they’re the ones who see the best in us you know? They’re the ones who see the best people we could possibly be. And if we keep trying to live up to that, maybe one day...we’ll get there.”

Carol smiled softly, she wasn’t the best gift wrapper herself and the whole thing screamed of effort. The effort was what she cared about. “That’s so sweet Reed, thank you, really.”  She carefully unwrapped the box, trying not to tear the paper too much, but with the tape haphazardly wrapped around the whole thing she ended up just having to rip through it all to open the box.  Inside was a collar, obviously the right size for a cat, that had a blinking light on it like she’d seen on various types of space helmets. “So Goose can fly with me! Reed that’s absolutely amazing!”

        “Anytime.” Reed replied with a smile. He was glad that she liked it and hopefully would get a lot of use out of the gift. It was all he really wanted from the little tinker project. “Hopefully Goose’s head fits in it. I didn’t have his measurements so I-” He stopped himself from going on a tangent about researching average cat neck and head sizes. Carol didn’t care about any of that. “Let me know if it needs adjustment.”

Carol leaned against the wall for a moment, the collar dangling from a finger, looking over at Reed. If she had to guess he hadn’t slept in days, he and Tony tended to be a bit insufferable on that particular habit. Although at least Reed ate when he was in full science mode, she thought that that at earned him a little bit of credit. “Reed,” She said softly, “When was the last time you left this lab? You look spent. And I know you only make little gifts like this when you need something for your hands to do while working on a much bigger problem. Why don’t you come on a walk with me? Grab a sandwich or something? You’ll see things with new eyes if you take a break and unless there’s something I should really know the world won’t end if you spend an hour giving your brain a break.”

Carol cracked her knuckles, floating a few inches into the air.  “I was talking to give you a chance, kid.”  She could tell the girl was overly cocky, but also that she was ultimately out of her depth and not ready for the gamble she was taking on full blown fight with Carol. She braced herself, waiting to deflect the impact she was sure would come. 

Lyla’s eyes followed the woman up into the air. “Uh….I just meant playing pool.” she said pointing to the billiards establishment across the way. She wasn’t stupid enough to fight Captain Marvel. Even if she did have abilities, which she didn’t. “So less floaty floaty? I just wanted to ask you some questions and have fun. I’m a bit competitive though. A fatal flaw of mine.”

Carol quickly let herself fall back to the ground and sighed feeling somewhat embarrassed, that was an annoying trait the air-force had left her with, she was always expecting someone to start a fight. “I’m sorry,” she laughed shortly, “You must think I’m just another insufferable super always looking for a fight.” She sat down next to Lyla and sighed, “When you sign up for the military what they don’t tell you is all the psych shit you’re gonna get left with. What do you do? Since we’re on the topic. And yes, I’d love a round of pool, I’m terrible but it’ll be fun anyway.”

Carol crossed her arms, trying to think of the best way to move forward. Pam had a point, and to be completely fair she didn’t actually want to hurt her plants. Honestly she was more impressed than anything else with the way the vines and flowers twisted and moved with her.  Carol’s eyes narrowed, “You haven’t given me anything to fight you over yet but I don’t take to threats lightly.”

Pam shrugged, though she appeared mildly amused. “No,” she agreed. “Another way in which you’re similar to your heroic peers. You’re so very sensitive. Every promise or warning is a threat.” She gave a dry chuckle. “Maybe a better word is dramatic. Although I suppose I could be a bit of a hypocrite in that case. But at times melodrama is the only way people will listen.”

She shrugged. “You know, I only really want one thing,” she said. “To protect the environment that is so often ravaged by selfish human beings hell-bent on pursuing their own ends. If I have to be…ruthless to achieve that goal, I won’t apologize for that or change my mind.”

Carol nodded slowly while she listened to Pam speak. Coming to this world, it was a crash course in kinds of activism she didn’t even know existed. Meta humans, mutants...plant people. The most out of the ordinary thing Carol had had to deal with in her former world was aliens...but villains...no Pam wasn’t a villain, not when she had seen the likes of Mar-Vell and Thanos.  People like Pamela Isley saw the world differently from her, from most people, but she understood what it was like to feel like your worldview was constantly banging up against the standard moral code.  “Look...Pamela, can I call you Pam? Ivy? Whatever’s most comfortable. I get what it’s like to be fighting for something that almost everyone thinks is insane. I know you see me as just another brash, dramatic hero intent on ruining your life’s work. But from what I can tell you’re a genius, like one of the most brilliant scientists in the world. Why does saving the environment have to involve hurting people?”

Carol practically shook with laughter as she looked at the man sitting next to her at the bar. “Well, it seems like we have altogether too much in common. Memories erased, brainwashed, finally recovered, and then yanked from your own universe and somehow ended up here.” She took a gulp of beer and shrugged, “Well, it’s nice to meet a kindred spirit to say the least. Have, whatever they’re called...the x people or whatever? Have they been able to give you any help. I know the Avengers are doing next to jack for me...” Carol scoffed, “Not like they really exist anymore.”  She thought for a moment, playing with her rings and biting the inside of her lip. “More importantly...are you happy here? I mean happy is subjective, people in our line of work don’t really get happy but at least...better than you were before?”

        “Death is like an old friend who pays a visit, sometimes when it’s least expected and other times when you’re waiting for her.” Peter wasn’t usually poetic, in fact he was usually the opposite. He wasn’t sure where the words had come from, but it didn’t make them any less true. Death surrounded him, surrounded the Avengers. It was part of doing what they did to try and save people and the world, but that didn’t make it any easier every time it payed a visit.

Pam didn’t often take care of the hyenas herself, but Bruce had been especially restless today, so she thought she would do Harley a favor and get him out of the house. It was a favor for herself, too, if not more so – she hoped the hyena expending all this energy would prevent him from doing anything to her plants. Bruce trotted along serenely enough at her side at first, but a sound from around the corner had him taking off at a run. Pam followed behind him, walking just fast enough to keep him in view so she wouldn’t lose him. When he bound directly up to another person, she couldn’t help but laugh. “Oh, be careful,” she said, casually. “He’s wild, after all. Who knows what he might do?”​

Carol laughed, balancing on one knee as the Hyena excitedly sniffed all over her shirt.  “Don’t sweat it, I’ve had my fair share of experience with exotic pets.”  She smiled down at Bruce, “What’s his name?” The hyena kept sniffing her, occasionally licking the hand she had offered him. “It seems like he smells my cat...well, Flerken.”  Her eyes turned to Pamela, “Although I don’t suppose you’ve ever actually met a Flerken. She could give this little boy a run for his money though.” She laughed softly.  “I’m Carol, if you don’t mind me asking, how does one come to own a wild hyena?”

Carol stood up from lacing up her sneakers.  “So, you really wanna train with a super human.” She laughed, “Gutsy, I can appreciate it.”  Carol let herself float a few inches off the ground and did a lap around the parking lot. “You still need to warm up? Cause I’m ready to rock.”

Pam rolled her eyes as the woman spoke, glancing over at her. “I would much prefer it if you simply left me alone,” she said. “But super humans like you tend to have a problem with the activities I get up to when left to my own devices. Evidently many of you have rather dull notions of right and wrong.”

She frowned at her. “I know what you do,” she said. She called on the plants beneath her to form supports beneath her feet, lifting her up to the same level as Carol. “And if you hurt my plants, I would be very upset. It’s not easy to predict what I’d do when I get very upset.” She smiled serenely. “But I can assure you, it wouldn’t be pleasant.”

Carol walked into the lab and stopped dead in her tracks. It wasn’t that she’d never been on a top scientist’s lab before but this was on a whole other level. She stumbled for a moment, “You…you,” she cleared her throat, “ahem…you said you had something to show me.”  Carol walked further into the lab, surveying the various projects in different levels of experimentation. “From the looks of it you have a lot of somethings.”

      “Oh Carol.” Reed jumped out of his stool, pulling his face away from the microscope he had been using to observe the behavior of a microorganism for a different project. He had fallen behind on that, working on something for Carol instead. The idea had struck him and he couldn’t stop thinking about it until it was done. Now that it was, he asked her to come see it. “Perfect timing.” Looking around the lab, he shrugged before his eyes met hers once again. “This something is for you though.” Walking to the other side of the lab, he grabbed an object wrapped in the best gift wrapping he had ever done (meaning it looked like it was in shambles, the wrapping barely covering the gift). “This is for you.” Reed set it down on the table next to her, watching expectedly as he waited for her to open it.

Carol watched Tony closely from across the table, she couldn’t read him, it unsettled her, how opaque he seemed to be. Nevertheless, he had called her, a rarity in and of itself so at least she knew she was wanted.  It had been nearly a month since Carol had first arrived in this dimension, some things took some getting used to, others felt exactly the same. It was at least nice to know that apparently, no matter what world she was in Tony Stark was more or less the same. Carol leaned back in her chair, “So, Tony, lay it on me.”

Tony studied the woman across from him for a moment, a little frown laying on his lips. He was still trying to figure out this whole multiverse deal, both as a scientist and because he had some questions of his own from a personal perspective. It seemed like she knew him already – or at least of him – or at least…of a version of him. It was perhaps a matter of semantics that he was still interested in untangling. 

“I got some questions,” he said, the corner of his mouth quirking up into a crooked smile. “Are you different from the Carol Danvers that was here before? What happened to her?”

Carol chewed the inside of her cheek trying to organize her thoughts. 

“From what I’ve gathered I’m younger, got my powers a little earlier, stayed with the air-force a little longer. On a biological level, this is my body, they ran tests. About five years younger and a different blood type, funny how things like that work.” She let out a small, mostly humorless laugh. 

“As for what happened to the other Carol. I’ve got no clue. Logic would dictate we switched places. The being I was fighting that sent me here...well...we knew it had multiversal powers, but nobody knew how they worked. If I had to guess she’s in my universe, running the same gamut.” Carol leaned back uncomfortably, “But I hate guessing.”
