Don’t reboot Buffy; continue the narrative with different Slayers!

Isn’t the whole point of a Slayer being chosen in “every generation” the perfect setup for exploring this world of demons and Slayers without having to reboot the original story with the same characters?

Seriously, we could have a Slayer TV show for DECADES if we followed the Doctor Who formula! Every series would feature a new Slayer and her story. It could be set in ANYWHERE in the world, from ANY time period.

For example: An African warrior who fights off the Romans by day, and tracks vampires by night. (She’d have a horse!) A scholar from the Spanish Golden Age who excels in research and secretly writes tales of fantasy based on her RL experience battling demons (inspiring a whole generation of girls). A 19th century Indian girl active in the Indian Independence Movement (I bet the Watchers’ Council wouldn’t like that, haha!). A cyborg from the future defending offworld territories (in a spaceship!) from species that want to annihilate the human race…

Each Slayer series would feature a different culture (why does it have to be American all the time?), and different historical events. Diversity would be a natural part of the series. Imagine the possibilities!

What bothers me perhaps more than anything are the comments I see on articles ranging from the one on Gawker to the one at the Huffington post - white person after white person decrying 'political correctness', defending this party, defending the stereotypes being presented, and/or telling every person offended to 'lighten up' because thanks to them the world just isn't fun anymore.

I am white and I'm grossly offended by the behaviour and statements of so many other white people right now. I can't begin to imagine what it's like for people of colour to be told - for the umpteenth time - that they have no right to take offense at being made the subject of mockery and scorn, that they should 'lighten up'... you know... be more white about things.

In case you thought that no one was paying attention to the "brilliant" legal strategy being employed in the defense of the men who gang raped an 11 year old girl in Cleveland, Texas, I have news for you: attention is being paid... by the legal counsel of the Moraga School District in California. So impressed by this strategy are they that they are employing it themselves. In a recent court filing, they have stated that the victim who is suing them, who was 12 years old when she was raped by a teacher, was herself negligent and at least partially responsible for everything that happened to her. Defense attorney calls 11 year-old gang rape victim a spider luring men into her web

Sickening:

Former Cleveland Police Department Sgt. Chad Langdon, who was the lead investigator on the case, also testified that an 11-year-old - due to her emotional immaturity - legally cannot give consent for a sexual encounter.

[Lawyer Steve] Taylor questioned why the underage girl had not been charged with anything for choosing to violate that rule, indicating that she was “the reason” that the encounters happened.

“Like the spider and the fly. Wasn’t she saying, ‘Come into my parlor, said the spider to the fly?’ ” Taylor asked.

“I wouldn’t call her a spider,” Langdon replied. “I’d say she was just an 11-year-old girl.”

“I hope nothing like this ever happens to your two teenage sons,” Taylor snapped back.

Prosecutor Joe Warren asked Langdon what he would do if his own sons had been involved in such a case.

“I would not whitewash it or sweep it under the rug,” the detective said.
