“Unfortunately, not as drunk as I’d like to be.” Henley said, knowing that he was going to have to cut down on the drinking if he was ever going to try and keep a secret around here. “Then I guess I’ll have to find someone else to fall for my charms.”
She rolled her eyes. “Go for it. You always did like they dumb, didn’t you?”
henleyhowell:
“Right. Right.” Henley took another stab at rolling his eyes, smirk pulling widely at his mouth before he took his own drink and drank it in a swift motion. “I forgot how cute you were. Maybe you can help me remember sometime?”
“Cute? Are you already drunk?” The compliment made her feel...weird. So she just ignored that bit of it and drank her drink. She really didn’t like drinking. “I’m not here to jog your memory, Mr. Howell.”

“And there it is. You two still bickering over something that probably doesn’t matter in the long run?” Henley tried, lifting a brow in her direction. “Well, then I guess the pleasure is all mine.” He took his own ale and sipped at it carefully. “I’ve often wondered how you cope with things. Guess I don’t need to wonder any longer.”
“I don’t bicker. Rose just complains, I do my job.” She couldn’t believe he would ever think she’d do something so mundane. She rolled her eyes. “Only around you. Other than that I don’t need any help to cope with things. I have no regrets.”

“Oh, is she here then? Nothing I love more than a family reunion.” Henley knew she probably was, on assignment of course, but played it off as stupid. You often got more information that way. “Aren’t you just a creature of habit?”
“I wouldn’t be cleaning up her messes if she wasn’t,” she replied giving him an icy glare. She sighed at him. “No. I don’t even like drinking. But you...I won’t get through this conversation without at least one.”

“If I wanted to tell you what was wrong don’t you think I would have came to you first instead of drowning my sorrows with alcohol?” Rosalie snapped at her older sister. “It’s not like you actually care anyway. You have to ask because you’re my sister.”
“No. Because you love attention, sister dear.” She rolled her eyes, unamused. “I care. But I’m not going to help if you’re going to be ridiculous.”
“I’m sitting alone in a bar crying on a Saturday night, so my night is obviously going great,” Rosalie said, carefully wiping the tears under her eyes with one of those small, square napkins the bartender set the drinks on. “I’m on my third drink and the only thing keeping me going at this point is knowing a fourth one is coming.” She sniffled, looking away to avoid making contact with the person talking to her. “So, if you’re done harassing me I’d like to be alone.”
Fleur was never good at comforting her baby sister. Te act itself felt robotic, forced, and Fleur hated that. She wanted to be a god sister but all she could think was that her sister was being...weak. “I’m hardly harassing you. I just asked if you were alright.”

Henley gave a short chuckle as he heard Fleur’s words, nodding slightly to show that he agreed with her. “I have no doubt about that.” He whispered back, drawing his arm around her waist slowly to try and bring her in closer despite her pulling away. “You know me too well. What are you drinking tonight?”
She rolled her eyes at him, but still let him pull her closer. “I may know you well, but I’m sure my sister knows you better.” She thought about it for a moment. “Guinness.”

Henley saw the girl, lifting a brow the moment he realized who she was, and figuring the same happened to her just as well. “Clearly pretty special if it drew you in.”
She leaned in close to him so only he could hear. “Of course. I have things under control here too. So I don’t really know why there is...” She took a deep breath and pulled away. “Are you trying to charm me, stranger? You shpuld at least offer me a drink first.”
“And here I thought I was special for receiving a welcome gift basket. Turns out everyone got one, huh? Is this town usually so god damn nice to its residents?”
Fleur’s eyes widened for a moment once she realized who was speaking, but her look of worry quickly dissolved into a smile. “From what I’ve sen this town is a special one.”

Ben halted in his steps when the girl did, hands shoved down into his pockets. If she was fine and just useless he didn’t see why the hell she was bothering. “I dunno, sweetie,” he smiled, wide and fake. “Why’re you?”
“Can you cut the shit?” She was annoyed now. She wasn’t supposed to be this annoyed now. She had just fucking got to this stupid town. “You want something from me. Tell me what it is or go. I don’t need this bullshit when all I wanted to do was go to the fucking grocery store.”

Ben didn’t know any fucking Rosalies, on the bright side. He didn’t have to be any more invested in this than he already was (and he was, certainly, embarrassingly so from the touch). “How long’s she been in town?” was his next question. He could tell a bit about her from that, at the very least. “What’s wrong with her? She’s sick? Is that what you said?”
Fleur stopped walking. He was really something. “I haven’t said a thing. I just said she was useless. She is alive, not dying, or anything serious. Just useless on her own.” She turned so that she was looking into his eyes. “Why are you pretending to give a shit?”

There was no casual way to initiate contact with a total stranger. He had two options in the moment, and those were to either look like he was making a move on her and risk being arrested, or to try and fight her, which would definitely get him arrested. Either way it was far too personal. “Why’d you say you were here, again?”
“My sister,” she said simply. “I mean...she’s having a hard time getting used to this place. I’m here to help her settle. The first step is groceries because she hardly has any. She is a bit of a mess. But don’t tell her I said that if you know her. Her name is Rosalie. I cal her Rose though. Most people do.”

“Yeah, actually. Headed there myself.” Even though he didn’t want to and hated grocery shopping slightly more than a lot of other stuff. “I can walk you if you want.”
“That’d be lovely,” she said with a smile. “I could use a buddy while I’m trying to figure out where everything is.”

“Of course. It’s not a problem at all. Are you just in town visiting?”
‘Sort of. I have a feeling I’ll be here a little longer than expected. How long have you lived here?”

Ben flinched away instinctively from the contact, but he was surprised when he didn’t see anything. No intrusive sights or sounds or memories playing their way through the reel in his mind’s eye, and he stared at her in guarded awe. “You…” he stopped himself, breathing in deep and out slowly. “I’m…” curious, he wasn’t going to say. “Walking that way, just… walk with me.” he suggested with a shrug.
She stared at him in confusion. He seemed to be relieved that she bumped into him and all Fleur could think was that his...mutation had to do with the senses. She knew she would rather be far away from the situation, but she had to see what she was dealing with in this town. “Alright...” she said slowly. “Lead the way then.”

“Oh, it’s no trouble. There’s one not too far from here if you want to me take you. I have some free time.”
“Could you? You would be a life saver!”

Ben squinted and closed off further. He didn’t like questions. If one thing about him was consistent it was that. “I don’t see how that’s any of yer fuckin’ business, dearie,” he grumbled. “I doubt I’m from anywhere you’ve ever been if you’re that surprised.”
She frowned. She didn’t have time for this, she had so much to get done here. And she wasn’t going to let one of them waste her time. “Sorry. Alright, thank you for the instructions.” She held her purse close to her before trying to walk by him. But when she tried to pass, she must have made a misstep and she accidentally bumped into his shoulder. “Shit...sorry, again.”
