Due to exams at Uni and the recent heatwave in Europe (as I live in EU), I was unable to post anything for my Phainon challenge this month. Even though there are still a few hours left, I'm honestly too tired to think of anything.
This brings me to the next point. Phainon's 1st anniversary post will be delayed... as much as it pains me to do that. It will be posted in July, but most likely near the end. I already have something in my drafts, but it's nowhere near finished.

Me and a friend of mine (we met through the touchstarved community) noticed a wave of posts regarding the quality of the first chapter, making complaints really, can't say it was constructive feedback at all, and as someone who very much still loves and cares about the game, I wish to give a piece of my mind about it. (this may be a bit rambly and also english is not my first language but LETS GO).
Its saddening to see how every time something new drops from the devs, a small but VERY vocal part of the people who play the new content make their complaints known, but in a very inflammed and heated way; not constructive, not feedback to help the devs see what could be improved in the final product, just very venomous posts.
Let's all remember the game is still unfinished and in production, the demo was enough to show that even stuff that has been around for years can and WILL be improved before the game releases in full, so why would the first chapter be different? The demo also showed us that the devs have full potential of writing amazing characters and setting up good stories, so why the sudden switch?.
I played the first chapter back when it was given to the Kickstarter backers, and I did notice it had issues with pacing and writing, but I still loved seeing new stuff from the characters I love, and I also got excited to see more of what the full game would offer.
People fail to realize that games need TIME to be developed and that the demo was great because the devs had all the time in the world (2-3 years ish) to polish it until it was available for us to play. This time they aren't developing just a demo ofc, but the FULL GAME.
The first chapter isn't and never will be the full picture of how the game will be on release. Also, backers aren't board members of some sort, its totally okay to have feedback about the game and you should have a critical sense for art, but just because some of us poured in money in the kickstarter or through merch, this game isn't ours to develop and there isn't a single artwork in the world that will specifically cater to YOU in every way.
If you see that there are a lot of things in the game that don't speak to you personally or that you didn't enjoy the experience as a whole, that's fine, but we can't demand the devs to make changes to accomodate for our tastes every single time; They are developing the game they want to see, first and foremost.
If you are not interested in giving constructive criticism, then don't shit on an unfinished game? The devs will see these comments eventually, and since this is far from the first issues we had as a community, it's likely that they will become more discouraged with the production of the game if they see that they get bashed for every new thing they put out.
I do think the game will come out despite what some people might say, and it is being developed with love; I won't be naive to say I don't mind the delays, I think the devs should have paid more attention to creating realistic deadlines and defining the scope of the game a bit more strictly, but I also think that a delayed game is bound to be good, rather than a game that releases early and doesn't reach its full potential of what it could have been.
So my end thoughts are, give the devs time and support! Through the first chapter and the kickstarter/patreon updates we can see they are doing a great job, and I can't wait to see the full game once it's ready, and as a community I think we gotta do our part in making sure the devs feel supported and cared for while they are developing this amazing game :) and also be mindful to not create or allow a community that is working against the devs at every step.
I hope the devs are able to be okay even after all this criticism and realize that the majority of the community is still super excited about the game and want to see it reach its full potential and eventually release, no matter how much time it takes. (what is another year or two for someone who has been following the game since 2023 right LMAO <3).

So obviously now that chapter 1 preview is out, thereâs a bit more discussion about the content within it and peopleâs opinions on it. Itâs allowed that people can have thoughts and feelings on it - ch 1 preview is a form of media thatâs meant to be engaged with.
But what really has me stewing is the fact that some people on Reddit said they were going to email the developers and express their concerns. Some of the comments on patreon had a similar feeling or were overtly this way.
If youâre a fan of the game, Iâd hope you want it to come out. And letâs just look at it practically - if the developers make 2-6% progress on writing each month, voice lines are fully recorded for some routes, and art is established for later on in the story, itâs just absolutely crazy to ask for or expect major overhauls of what weâve seen in chapter 1. Visual novels are like trees anyway - altering chapter 1 in significant ways would send cascading edits throughout their entire work thus far, even to the point of impacting later CGs and re-recording voice lines. The devs have spent months editing and writing the chapters. I can say that ofc itâs reasonable there are changes that people might prefer or wish for - I think thatâs natural for any game. But just because people want a change doesnât mean it should be made or is practical for it to be made.
Also, a common critique is about the pacing. IMO, part of why the pacing might be faster is that literally the scope of the plot is a lot larger than plenty of other otome/amare games. The devs planned to have 5 chapters for each character. Think logically about the path each character is on.
Vere is escaping the Senobium at night through shadow form (?) and has been plotting how to leave the Senobium for like 100 years. Kuras is strong enough to raze the city to the ground and like, shatter heaven. Ais is being overtaken by a god (?) who may try and seize control over the city. Mhinâs been investigating the shroud and traveling through time(?). Leanderâs being himself. LIKE. The game isnât going to be a slow burn romance where it takes a long time to hold hands because things need to get moving to reach a satisfying conclusion on these plot points in only 5 chapters. The characters need to fall in love with mc, have a personally and possibly world shattering conflict, and then resolve it. We canât waste time blushing while peering at each other from beneath our lashes.
ALSO, 4/5, possibly 5 out of 5 characters are fairly sexual people. Ais, Leander and Vere all go without saying. But even Mhin has hooked up with Leander for example, and Kuras has dated plenty in the past. MC is absolutely thrilled to have someone they can touch without fear of irrevocably damaging them - and they can touch plenty of the LIs. if we go canonically, it doesnât make that much sense to me for the physicality of the relationship to lag behind that much. Maybe itâs not what YOU would do, but the Touchstarved devs have a vision for the MC and the game as a whole - and importantly, many constraints that theyâre working under.
I donât think the devs are faultless or something, but itâs like. 1) be realistic about what changes can be made at this point 2) understand that we have a much more narrow view of the characters and the plot 3) the devs are working very hard to create something that both fans would enjoy and represents their artistic vision, and it doesnât feel that appreciated to me.
Sure, there are changes that I would make if I was an editor for the game. And I think that probably the devs should announce a second delay, because following the percentage progress, I donât think theyâre on track to release this this year unless things start progressing faster.
But like emailing the devs about your issues with the game and requesting specific changes just feels so entitled to me idk. Ppl reading this might say - âitâs not entitled, I paid money so they should create the product that I want.â ok, but itâs not a personalized, made-to-order meal. If you read a book or watch a movie and donât like it, itâs inappropriate to go to the creator and demand they make changes until you approve, even though u bought the novel or paid a ticket.
Also thereâs risk inherent to backing smth on kickstarter - the game not coming out at all, totally shifting in direction, etc. paying money there literally is just like âI want these creators to be able to attempt this idea.â IMO, if someone going to be very specific and nitpicky about execution, theyâre not the type of person who should be backing things in advance. If they care that specifically about the end product, they should wait for it to actually exist and make sure it meets their various standards before spending anything. Unless youâre paying for the backing tiers where you are allowed to help shape the game, your money only entitles you to receive the product that is created.
