her mom was half veela,,, and she was very aware of that, to say the least

it always secretly annoyed Cassie how her mom always played the “when we’re in public i’m your sister!” card because all Cassie wants is a mom, but y’know she’s just gonna leave that be

Her dad had been born in America to an ethnic Han Chinese family, but had always wanted to move back home. Out of all his siblings, he was the only one to pay attention to his grandma’s stories about their homeland

He went to college, and when he graduated with a masters in engineering, you bet your ass he went to Hong Kong to test his luck in a start-up idea he had

He didn’t plan to meet a half-veela witch and fall in love

Nowadays, The Tsui-Johnson marriage isn’t that strong, but Lincoln’s a muggle and he couldn’t bear the idea of a ministry wiping his memory if anything ever went south; That’s how Naomi and Lincoln came to the agreement that they would be seperated, but not technically divorced

In case you’re wondering, Cassie came after this decision. Her dad denies it, but she knew she was an accident. Her mom..  would agree if she were sober whenever Cassie was with her

Cassie thus grew up in a very odd atmosphere, where she wasn’t entirely sure which side she felt closer too. 

She definitely loved her dad, but he was no wizard, or witch like her mom was. He could never have dealt with her early years without her mom’s help

She can’t help comparing herself to her mom because her mom.... is just so her. 

That’s why Cassie strives so hard to get good marks in school, so she could be known for something other than her her relation to her mom (and so people would have something to talk about other than the fraction of veela in her, which lbr here she couldn’t see)

right so she goes by Maya most of the time, because she’s most definitely not a fan of random people butchering her name, or just calling her “sue” (she once got into a fight with a girl at her daycare her mom left her at when she was at work because she insisted Sue was a better name than Sumaya

maya tolerates no disrespect towards her mother, seeing as she raised her single-handedly after her dad left. or died. maya’s not exactly sure which one is true, or even which one she’d prefer.

she’s the only child of a single mother, and she really doesn’t much about her father, other than that her mother and him met while she was studying abroad in Oslo, and that she’s found old pictures of when she was an infant with her father holding her.

Her mother was a muggle-born who attended Uagadou but chose to integrate into muggle society after the Somali Civil war ripped her mother’s family away from their home

maya’s never met her family from her dad’s side, except for one time when she interrupted two people claiming to be her grandparents arguing via floo with her mother. she thought she heard something about durmstrang? she’s not exactly sure of that either.
