Godric, he really was like Sirius. “Ha, ha,” she said dryly, lips twisting into a smirk. “I mainly wanted to tell you that your brother didn’t leave to abandon you, so if that’s got your blessing…” Marlene trailed off. In all honesty, she felt gutted for Regulus. It just didn’t mean it was Sirius’ fault, or that he didn’t love his brother.

"Well, you can tell Sirius that if he wants to talk about what he did then he can stop hiding behind your skirt." He chewed at the inside of his lip with a huff, "He left me alone with our psycho family, I don't care about that coward."

"I see him, of course. But he didn’t return my letters after he left… so-” She lied, a pang of guilt hitting her with her words, “You haven’t spoken to him then? He hasn’t tried to…?”

"He tries." He said shortly, "He doesn't do a good job of it. He seems to think that he can come back to me as if nothing happened at home."

"Very funny, cousin," she replied, offering him a slightly amused look. "Now, are you going to tell me what’s really the matter, or do I have to start guessing?"

"You can guess if you want," He shrugged, "Maybe I just like to be solemn."

Flicks of vile thoughts sputter into the young Malfoy’s mind. Should he tell his childhood friend about the pathetic rumors that have been circulating around? Can he even trust that they’ll stay confidential; away from the prying ears of others that find refuge in the idea that Lu and Cissa are having conflict with their betrothal? Thoughts of saying anything on the matter fly in and out of his mind.

The deliberation, however, reaches a screeching halt when the blue-eyed brunette speaks again. He can’t help but notice the eyeroll as well. It makes him even more keen to let his eyes wander across the canvas before him. It’s his right to see what he chooses. And unless Regulus is a bloody fool, he’ll keep his mouth shut and allow the blonde to do as he pleases.

Comments of ‘taking care’ of bothersome people makes a burst of air and laughter fly from Malfoy’s lips. He cachinnates insanely in front of the opposite male, shaking his head to settle his laugh. The poor, naïve, young Black has still much to learn in the Wizarding World. To think that he would “take care” of someone pestiferous is all too humorous to Lu. Several other inquiries are addressed. Lucius takes a moment to ponder them, curious as to how he should be reacting to this situation.

As a fellow friend, he considers the idea that, Reg, too would understand his grieving. But their friendship was far from… normal. Many students thought they hated each other. With good reason too, considering their methods of addressing each other were misleading to their true feelings. “I’m amused by them, really,” he lies, staring straight into the blue irises across from his. “Students must be rather bored to believe such rubbish and spread it around like wildfire. All of them are aware that our relationship is practically infamous. I can’t help that the attention is quite respectable.” The next question throws his off guard. But only a bit. Did he really feel for her? Maybe he forces it upon himself… “Yes, yes of course I do. But it doesn’t mean that I must stay faithful to the girl. Not quite yet, at least.”

He wasn't surprised to be laughed at. What could he do, as a schoolboy? It wasn't a copious amount of love that kept Regulus loyal to his family, at least it wasn't only love. They provided protection and so was he obligated to, though his efforts always looked like the joke of the century. Standing up to a malicious bully or an impudent fuck wit was standard, little white threats and a flashy reputation that preceded his actions. But then there were people like Lucius who knew the superficiality of the insults. It didn't take a genius to realize that he couldn't carry out threats in school, but most students acquiesced just out of instilled fear of the family name. Then there was the Malfoy's, who were known for thinking big of themselves. Regulus wasn't his father, nor did he desire to be the type of man who would order his 'associates' to kill an enemy if he felt the least bit threatened; Too vain and paranoid to even take care of business himself, as if arranging murder from the safety of his home kept his slate cleaner, as if he could fool the Devil himself. "Quit ogling me if you're not going to take me seriously. I may not have power at the moment, it's guaranteed to be mine in a few years time." He spoke sharply. "You think I can't take care of my enemies?" It was true in a way, there were things he could do, but it wasn't formidable, it was more along the lines of simple hexes and white lies. "I hope she knows that," He grudgingly smiled. "You know it's my duty to protect her."

Sirius clenched his jaw and almost growled, “It wasn’t like that. How many times do I have to tell you?”

"The economy." He said, with a hesitant smile. "Are you worried?"

"Yeah, hi. I wanted to talk to you about Sirius. You’ve played Quidditch against us enough times to know that I’m very determined, so you might as well get it over with."

"Sure-- He's actually a natural blonde, and you have my blessing for whatever it is you want to ask. Satisfied?"

Lu thinks of the idea in a speculative manner. He figures that Reg’s words hold a tumultuous truth to them. Being a prefect did give him a rather uplifting demeanor. It also allows him free reign of the school, not that he didn’t really have it from the get-go, considering he is a Malfoy.

In retrospect, the voicing of the name “Sirius” crosses his mind. But, no. No, no. He doesn’t want that name to slide across his tongue. It tastes like blood, as it should. It was sweet with a blush of roses, but it was repulsive nonetheless. It may be a pure-blood name, but that doesn’t mean it was accepted. The git walked around like he was perfect. Untouchable. Damn, would Lucius adore to send several curses towards that fucker. It makes his skin crawl with anticipation to think about it in the first place. He keeps his mouth shut, “It’s a mild rumor that’s been circulating. They believe it will get under my skin and provoke me in some way. Little do they know, I care none at all about futile behaviors of pathetic children waltzing around, spreading bloody bullshit through Hogwarts.”

The inquiry about no one knowing much about Lu’s personal life is so incredibly accurate, he nearly chokes on air. He glances at the contours of the aspiring brunette’s body before him. His mind trails like a puppy trying to keep up. “Correct, you are,” he says, seemingly unamused and so terribly unenthusiastic, he nearly sounds like he’s attending the most boring lecture in history. “I’m sure someone could quash you if they had a particular drive,” he remarks, giving the younger male a small, sinister curl of his lips.

Regulus drifted away into his thoughts for a moment, Narcissa, he thought with a copious amount of love and dread, wouldn't be caught dead in an awkward situation. At least, not from what Regulus knew of her. Any of his cousins, it was all foul play to make rumors about them. It was so fun to spread rumors about young girls, it would be a treat to find the repugnant sods who were doing it. And he wasn't even the worst fate that could happen to them. Whatever poor sap had let the fraudulent hearsay loose would end up regretting it eventually, no secret stayed hidden forever. "Who told you about all of this anyways?" He asked, "They're annoying me, I'll deal with it." Better he did than his cousins, prim and proper as they were, Regulus was sure any of them could kill him as easily as swatting a fly; He had to assume that about everyone in his family, at this point. The Black house bred enough loons to fill St. Mungo's and if it weren't for their wealth and wit they'd probably all be there. His eye caught Lucius' wandering around him and he nearly rolled his eyes, men, even he suffered it, but with more subtlety. "You're forgetting something. If anyone bothers me I take care of it." I have to keep up with the rest of my family if I want to stay afloat around here. The rest echoed in his head until full stop, rehearsed to himself like a curse. Stay afloat. He had a reputation to uphold. He was too tempting, the second he let go of his 'Black madness' attitude it would go into flames. Little Regulus, easy to destroy, soft. "Does it bother you to hear rumors about Cissa..? Do you feel for her much?"

Oh I don’t know, I thought mummy spanked you and took away your favourite toys if you misbehaved." he said in a mocked baby voice, "Not a million just half of the school, which is more than I can say about you. But then again I’m sure you prefer trolls."

"I don't stay behind because I'm told to. I stay because, despite my beliefs and theirs, I love my family. I stay because I'm grateful to the people who brought me up. Sounds like yours should have punished you a bit more, maybe you would be less of a public disturbance." He laughed, "Oh, where are they then? Are all of your fans hiding? Do tell them to come out sometime because all I see are people annoyed with you."

It comes once in a generation, you see mum was hers." he shrugged, "Oh you shouldn’t insult your mum’s cousin Dorea, or is it your dad’s? anyhow she’s still in the tree and I’m sure the elders won’t like hearing you talk about her like that." he pointed and rolled his eyes, "At least she didn’t marry a cousin, that’s why I’m so dashing."

"Sirius couldn't handle the way our parents raised us, and that's not intelligence, it's cowardice." He replied. "What makes you think that I give a fuck who I'm insulting? Dashing is a very large stretch on the truth, you don't exactly have a million girls falling over you."

Lu smiles at the younger lad, brushing his hands down his immaculate robes. He, of course, knows his words are always inerrant. Especially when he talks to those that he is familiar with. Their challenges of thoughts and whether his words speak the truth are irrelevant. They always lose. Lucius chuckles lightly and shakes his head, “I chose not to disappear. Being a Prefect and all,” he chides, adding a pause for a ridiculous dramatic effect, “allows me to shine my fame through all of the halls in Hogwarts. It can’t be possibly a burden for me. I don’t, yet, have other things to do with my time. There’s always something more to learn, Regulus.”

Details are retained for once. They stick in the very crevices of Malfoy’s mind. He tries to brush them away, doing his best to only choose what he selectively remembers. However, when he speaks with Reg, it’s difficult to ignore their past together. Growing up and all, being two well-known names among the wizarding families. He sighs and shakes his head, “Narcissa, oh yes. I’ve heard some rumors of her. Have you seen her as of late? I haven’t been able to keep her in one spot. She’s very flighty. I suppose Rab’s been factually sleeping with her. I will have to do something about that.” Lu lets his thoughts trail away from a moment before he turns his attention back to Regulus. “Ah, you poor soul. How is it you thrive with such a piteous family?”

Regulus gave him a tired shrug, "At least as a prefect you can torment freely, as you like, storm the halls and give anyone who crosses you a detention. Convenient." He agreed, "Better than home life." There was always tact between them, it seemed, at least at school. Not counting the times when they would actually hang out as friends. Meeting in the hallways with small talk brought on an aura of professionalism, between two prefects, it was a bit funny. His brain snapped like an elastic band as soon as he realized what he was doing-- he wasn't at his parents' parties, acting like a professional heir. He didn't have to keep himself up, "You really think Narcissa is sleeping around? Who the bloody hell told you that?" He asked with a snort, "If she was there's no way anyone would find out. Then again, nobody really finds out about what you do, either, do they?" He made a dismissive noise at the last inquiry, "I don't even have to try, I'm too firey to be repressed."
