Freedom Is Not Free
To commemorate the victory of World War II, choreographer Cunsong Xu presents a new dance work Freedom Is Not Free, to be performed on May 4 and 5.
The piece originates from an artistic concept initiated by Roos Hendriks, developed through long-term exchanges between Hendriks, Xu, and Ukrainian refugees living in the Netherlands. While war is often reduced in the media to a “geopolitical conflict,” it continues to live on in their bodies as memory, loss, and a state of ongoing tension.
Placing the human experience at its core, the performance weaves together dance, spoken testimonies, live music, and visual media to explore how war embeds itself in muscles, breath, and everyday gestures. Here, freedom is no longer an abstract idea, but a fragile and tangible reality.
