this moment is scratching my brain tonight in the sense of how it continues to show claire as the domineering force she is. owen goes for the arm with a threat, but claire just levels him with that owen and a look. the camera frames him as deferential to her, not the gun. the focus is on her when he takes his hand back with the gun almost completely obscured behind her. in fact, the gun is aimed at her, not him by this shot. if he is concerned about the gun, it's because it would fire on her instead
but the truly fun part is that she's not saving eli. she wants to be the one hitting him. and this isn't her being impulsive, either. the scene opens with her trying to jump him and being physically restrained. she wanted that lick and she was gonna get it. because she's the main character here.
and it also goes to show that this is something owen likes about her. he, and we as the audience, are meant to see this as a very positive part of her. he is the audience surrogate here getting excited that she did something unexpectedly uncouth. it's absolutely a good thing that she's still top dog; telling a man to hold her purse so she can do the hitting.
