Monday Blues

It’s Monday and I’ll be honest this one’s been a tad more difficult than any of the others. As a long time insomnia sufferer I’m used to running on a few short hours of sleep but this Monday I’m not just tired I’m also getting over a double ear infection a sinus infection and just for funsies acute bronchitis all brought on by the lovely allergies I suffer in the spring. Yay Spring!!! As such I tend to spend most of my time in doors attempting to cut down on the amount of time I suffer and I’ve had the distinct pleasure of revisiting one of my favorite worlds this past week and this weekend. The IN DEATH series by J.D. Robb is one of my favorite series of books. It’s Criminal Minds meets NYPD Blue and it’s set in the not so distant future in New York. The main character Eve Dallas is a tenacious homicide detective with a murky past. The first book in the series “Naked in Death” introduces us to her as she races to find a serial killer going after Licensed Companions or LC’s as they come to be known in the book. This is a sanitized term used to describe prostitutes, think high end call girls and boys. During her investigation she comes face to face with her own inner demons and we learn a bit more about her traumatic childhood. We get introduced to one of the best leading men in fiction Roarke. That’s right Roarke just Roarke no other name. Roarke has his own shady past and perhaps it’s this darkness that calls to Eve’s own inner darkness but whatever the reason she ends up having to investigate him in connection to the deaths. 

This series is chock full of interesting, deep, and complex characters. The plots are well thought out and fully realized. Some of these death scenes are not for the faint of heart as the author goes to great lengths to vividly describe what Eve deals with in the course of her investigations. The procedures are correct and we even get the bureaucratic frustration that all cops face when tracking down suspects and gathering data. Simply put this is one of the best crime-thriller series out there and that’s not an exaggeration. I highly recommend these books if you like crime drama, solving puzzles, action, adventure and yes there’s some romance too. Other books like this one would be Rizzoli and Isles by Tess Gerritson and the Scarpetta series by Patricia Cornwell.

Getting personal with a book reviewer.

I get asked all the time why I do what I do. Well the truth is I’ve been doing this my entire life. I can’t tell you when my love affair will books began because according to my mom I was born with it. What I do know is that for a child who grew up on the road constantly moving books were the safety and security I needed. A book would transport you, a book would travel with you, a book never let you down. My mother would say that books raised me as much as anything she ever did and I’ve have to agree with her on that. Books taught me to be patient, loyal, kind in the face of unkindness, tolerant of peoples differences, and courage to stand up even when everyone else is against you. The struggles and triumphs of those fictitious characters became lessons that challenged me to think outside of the box. Puzzles that showed me a new way of thinking a more organic, elastic, way of connecting pieces and creating new pictures. I learned that not all that glitters is gold and not all pretty people are kind but probably the greatest gift that reading taught me was to take each person I met as an individual and to eschew sweeping generalities. Because of this I’ve had the distinct pleasure of knowing people from all walks of life, from all different cultures and languages and they’ve enriched and expanded my own world view with their own stories. 

I review books because I want people to experience those same life altering, earth shattering, revelations. I want people to fan girl like proud geeks and I want to share my passion, my obsession, my addiction for the written word with the entire world. Simply put I do book reviews because I don’t want to be the only girl in this fandome I want the entire world with me.

Basically, when the people writing Scripture tried to describe what they saw when they saw an angel… they run into the end of their imagination… they can never quite seem to fully explain it because they had trouble even comprehending what they saw, let alone being able to describe it to someone else.

I used to listen to this radio show and one thing I remember because it was so funny was a Christmas special where an angel showed up to tell the shepherds about the birth of Christ.  The conversations went:

Angel: “FEAR NOT.”

Shepherds: *screaming*

Angel: “I SAID FEAR NOT.”

Shepherds: *screaming LOUDER*

Angel: “WHAT PART OF FEAR NOT ARE YOU NOT UNDERSTANDING?”

We hope Minsoo plans to bring us more of this in the future.

Yay my first novel is out!

After two years of hard work it is finally out.

Haze is the story of Jack, an art school dropout who has to face his repressed memories in a post-apocalyptic London. 

It was just another workday when he saw that girl stuffing her face with doughnuts from across the room. Who knew that this event would start it all.
