Just a heads-up that I'm outside of my usual routine (aka on holiday) for the next 3 weeks.

The boardwalk was blinking neon chaos in the distance, but up here, on the cliffs, the world was silent enough to hear the heartbeat David was systematically trying to stop.

He remembered finding her on that beach....a lost thing with eyes that looked like they were already mourning her own life. Max had told him she was bait for fresh blood. A necessary tool. 'Wendy' chosen specifically to domesticate his lost boys and ground them with a counterfeit sense of home. Max wanted her to bring a touch of warmth to a nest of runaways who had forgotten what a real home felt like. But David had seen something more.

"You’re doing it again" David said, his voice almost soft, lacking the sharp edge he usually reserved for her. "You’re looking at the horizon like there’s somewhere left to run. But we talked about this, didn’t we? No more running. No more being alone." He reached out, his gloved hand cupping her jaw with a tenderness that felt real, even if it was designed to stifle. He thought of the bottle he’d pressed into her hands, the half-truth he’d whispered about staying together forever. He hadn’t mentioned the hunger, or the way the sun would become an executioner. He’d just promised her a home and to be with him.

His gaze wandered toward the cave entrance where Laddie sat.....

Michael was impaling a half-buried corn dog wrapper….and he was ninety percent sure he was in love. It was silly, really. He had been in Santa Carla for all of five minutes. And instead of doing his actual summer job, which involved a rusted metal spike, a trash bag and minimum wage beach cleanup, he was actively projecting her face onto every girl within a three-mile radius. He’d already sprinted twenty yards down the shore after a girl in a purple shawl....

As the sun bled out over the horizon of Santa Carla, and pastels slowly turned to ink, the first stars started to appear on the firmament. And with the celestial bodies also came Star, the girl…the creature. She had ditched David and the boys as they were once again trying to terrorise the local residents. That wasn’t her; they tried to topple over flyer stands or be in people’s faces as often as possible.

Laddie was clinging to Dwayne this evening, so she let him join them. Star just honestly craved the calm and quiet, just the salty sea breeze in her hair, the crashing of waves and the occasional delighted squeal of people who were going around on the rollercoaster. It offered normality in the chaos.

The sound of Star's voice pulls him clean out of his own head. For a second, looking at the damp hem of her skirt and the sand clinging to her ankles, it really does feel like she just materialized out of the water. In the fading twilight, away from the neon glare of the boardwalk and the shadows of the cave, she looks so impossibly soft.

Michael looks down at the bottle cap held between her fingers. A foolish smile touches his lips, despite the exhaustion and the self-awareness that he must reek. He doesn't take the cap right away, for the fear she might just turn around again and vanish the moment he accepts her offering…..just…..make her stand right next to him…a little longer….

"David, I told you to leave him alone." Kyson's patience had finally worn thin. Or it already was. He'd held out on hope that perhaps the other boys would do something when they saw him shooting them looks, but they didn't. The snapped out words came out suddenly, protective. Protective over Michael, the sweet new guy in town who was honestly a breath of fresh air to the usual crowd of Santa Carla. But now, of course, David had to ruin that too. Couldn't have ANYTHING for himself it felt like now. The werewolf could already sense that something was going on, that his lovers were keeping him in the dark. Green eyes glared at blonde vampire in wary frustration. "He's new. He hasn't done anything, what the hell do you want with him?" @wolfofsantacarla

"I think the dog just barked at me." David's fanged smirk lingered on his face as he focused his full attention to the werewolf. "Down, boy" He reached out, his fingers brushing lightly against the side of Kyson’s jaw to address the sudden flare of temper.

Kyson wanted an explanation. A villainesque monologue detailing exactly why the Emerson boy was suddenly of interest. But David was never going to give him that. He couldn't tell Kyson that Max was quietly pulling the strings for a twisted family reunion, or that Star's fading loyalty was a variable he was desperately trying to manage, …..or that his own need for absolute control demanded…. something. It was a messy web and David's pride would never allow him to admit he was caught in it, too.

Instead, he deflected of course. He leaned in closer, invading Kyson's personal space just enough to be distracting. "The funny thing is… I barely even noticed the kid. Just another boring tourist taking up space on my boardwalk. But then you started guarding him. You told me to leave him alone. If you really wanted him to fly under my radar, you shouldn't have made him look like a shiny new toy you're trying to hide from me. So really… if anything happens to him, you only have yourself to blame."

“Fuck off—“ Kyson started to say in response to the dog comment, teeth bared slightly. But he soon faltered when David’s gloved fingers run across his jaw. The touch makes him flinch slightly, but he doesn’t pull away. His gaze faltering as he watched the vampire carefully.

Internally, he shrank a little when David suddenly close. But he doesn’t dare move. Brows furrowing as the blame is shifted.

“Wha— no!” He’d say, words coming out quick. A little breathless because of the audacity of the implication. But now there was a slight crack in his resolve. Lips twitching, looking a little unsure now as he retorted.

“I only told you that because you were looking at him all weird on the boardwalk when you saw me and Star with him that night!”

He huffs, green eyes averted. “David, that’s not fair—“

But what if he’s right? What if he did bring more attention to Michael? But how was that his fault? It wasn’t his fault… right?

When the werewolf stammers out his defense, trying to throw the weight back, David doesn’t argue but raises his eyebrows. He doesn't offer a counter-point. Because a counter-point would mean treating Kyson like an equal in a debate. Instead, his lips show a quiet smirk that questions how friendly it's supposed to look, entirely. It’s an insufferable expression that effectively ends the conversation. "Fair..." that's joke he's already bored of hearing. He lets out a mocking tsk, tilting his head. "Fair has absolutely nothing to do with it."

David doesn't offer Kyson the dignity of an explanation or an defense. He simply lets the implication settle into the space between them. Watching the doubt take root. With a brush of his gloved knuckle against Kyson's furrowed brow (more as an act of ownership than comfort) David turns the silence into his ultimate weapon. He drops his hand, but he doesn't step back. He merely holds Kyson’s gaze.....letting the boy suffocate under the suspicion that he might actually... be right.

Michael… Michael…It wasn't the wind and it wasn't the screech of the merry-go-round. It sounded like a dozen overlapping voices, hissing his name from the spaces beneath the boardwalk. When Val’s hands suddenly grabbed his shoulders, Michael flinched like he was being electrocuted. To his overstimulated nerves, her grip launched him back into a reality that was actively melting around him.

"Get off…!" he choked out, trying to jerk away from her. But his knees gave out the second he tried to pull back, forcing him to collapse his weight against her just to keep from face-planting. 'You’re gonna be fine. The worst is almost over.' The words trickled into his panicked brain…..and he clung to them. He was going to be alright. The relief was so intense. But wait. 'Almost over?' How did she know there was a process? How did she know what he was going through? He forced his heavy head up, his dark curls clinging to his sweaty forehead. His vision was a mess, but he managed to zero in on her face. He didn't recognize her. She wasn't Star. She wasn't David or one of the others. She was a total stranger. And in his spiralin mind, that was somehow worse.

Michael… come to us, Michael… the auditory hallucinations hissed again, blending seamlessly with the crashing waves.

Oh god. He was dying. He was actually dying on the Santa Carla boardwalk. Whatever they gave him in that cave…he was so sure he was overdosing. What would his mother think? Sam. He couldn't do that to them. The stranger was right. He had to stay awake.

She wanted him to follow her. But following strangers into the dark was exactly how he had ended up in this.. "I'm not following you anywhere. I don't… I think I'm overdosing. I need a hospital. What do you mean almost over?! Where…….where are we going?" He was still fiercely clinging to human logic. He didn't understand that he was a ticking time bomb. Another shudder of pain. He couldn't fight her. He didn't have the strength to stand on his own, let alone run.

Defeated by his own body, he let her guide him.

“It's a wave. Comes and goes. When it's like this, you've hit the top. Just need a few minutes 'til it goes back down again.”

His struggle to pull away barely fazed her, still holding onto the brunet as another wave of pain rushed through him. Even as it held onto the strange boy, she urged him forward, already desperate to lead him away. Her jaw clenched as her own memories of the urge surged in her mind again - every sense being knocked into overdrive, the pain, the fear of what was happening to her. It’d only be a matter of time before he was struck by the hunger, and that would be a nightmare to deal with.

“It's complicated. Not what you think it is. I'll explain once we're safer.”

Once he was safer, specifically. She kept walking, keeping a firm grip on the brunet's shoulders as she guided him away from the boardwalk. Val glanced around every now and then, keeping an eye open for anyone who looked remotely suspicious. Whoever had done this to the stranger was as cruel as, if not crueler than, the ones who’d forced her to become this monster. But that would come at a later time.

After what felt like minutes of careful she brought them both to a stop. The stretch of road that led from the beach to the old harbor was far enough from the noise and the lights, but it was also far from the people. No temptations, no urges to vamp out and feed - he’d be relatively safe here. Helping the brunet sit down on one of the nearby benches, she crouched to take in his appearance. The hair clinging to his brow, the pale complexion... had she been like this before, too?

“We should be okay, but I need you to take some deep breaths. Focus on something and just… let that take up space in your head, okay?”

"What makes you so sure about that?" Michael let his head fall back against the wooden slats of the bench. Pain. In waves. He knew waves. Even if he’d spent his whole life in the heat of Phoenix. He knew the momentum of dropping into a concrete half-pipe back home. The feeling of a heavy swell carrying you forward before crashing down. And since moving to Santa Carla, he’d spent hours watching the local surfers from the cliffs. Fascinated by the brutal power of the Pacific. But this...this pain....this wasn't something he could just ride out. This was ripping him apart from the inside out!

As they had stumbled away from the boardwalk, he’d expected someone to scream. A cop, a parent, a tourist...anybody to look at his pale, sweating face and call for help. But nobody did. To the boardwalk crowd, he was just another wasted Santa Carla teenager who’d had a few too many beers or a bad trip. Being dragged away by a friend to sleep it off. The normalcy of the world around him made the horror of his own body feel twice as loud.

The red tip of the joint had been sailing through the darkness like a falling star a block ago. But the sweet taste of the weed still hung heavy in his head. It was supposed to take the edge off. It was supposed to quiet the exhausting anxiety of his never ending thoughts. Trying to survive a new town, a mother dating a guy who made his spine stiffen with survival-instinct alarms, …and a little brother who…well, was a little brother. The high made the wet asphalt look wobbly, the puddles stretching out like watercolor under the streetlamps, leaving him floating in a strange, dazed sort of… focus.

Michael was pulling the collar of his denim jacket up against his neck. He’d been tracking the figure in front of him out of a sudden, deep-seated uneasiness. He had seen that gang of four, that suffocating weight that seemed to follow Star around like a bad omen. And for a moment, he had mistaken this kid for one or them. As the teenager stopped beneath the light, an eerie horror trickled down Michael’s spine. Through the haze of the weed, the scene felt entirely wrong. Uncanny. The teenager looked small, fragile even…but his skin didn't look like skin. It looked like marble. Like a statue stolen from a museum. There was no warmth to him. No vibration of life. And then his voice: “Who’s there? I noticed you…there is no need to pretend you are not there…” Impossibly smooth, so…. inviting….yet at the same time Michael wanted to run. It was the exact same wrongness in the air whenever The Lost Boys were near but amplified! Michael’s heart hammered loud enough so he could hear it in his own ears. His survival instinct, honed by years of dodging a volatile, abusive father, screamed at him to bolt. To run.

Instead, he stayed. He couldn't give this thing a sign of his panic, and he couldn't let his voice betray just how dazed the weed had left him. Shoving his hands deep into the pockets of his jacket to hide the slight tremor in his fingers, Michael slowly stepped out of the darkness. He didn't say a word. He just closed the distance. He stood half-submerged in the shadow, half in the light….his posture beneath his casual stance alert. Behind his messy locks, his eyes fixed onto the sunglasses of the boy before him. His silence hanging in the midnight air like a stubborn, defensive wall. He was entirely out of his depth…. but he refused to back down.

I watched the boy step into the cold light of the streetlamp. The rain still pitter-pattered around us and filled the otherwise quiet atmosphere with its soothing sound. Even though I haven’t held a paintbrush in a very long time, I still maintain the eye of an artist. And so it was to nobody’s surprise that I studied his features through this lens. His wet curls were a bit tighter than mine, a rich brown of autumn leaves. So were his eyes that currently watched me suspiciously. His face, half hidden by shadow, made him Rembrandt-esque. Handsome by all accounts.

I could see the tremble of his hands even though he hid them in the jeans jacket that could not keep the rain from soaking through. Neither of us moved, like two tigers seizing each other up. Was he aware that he was the mouse in this game? “You have chosen odd weather for an evening stroll.” A statement that could count for both of us, really. “Were you following me on purpose, or was it an accident that I felt your eyes boring into my back for three blocks now?”

I tilted my head to the right simply to have moved at all. “Or are you just a lost little lamb and need someone to guide you home?” A slight upwards curl appeared on my lips, not enough to expose my dangerously aching fangs but to give the illusion of safety. He was brave, I had to give him that, no doubt in the light, I looked more frightening than when the shadows had swallowed me. I could smell the scent of marijuana; it had mellowed him out. Maybe it was the drugs that prevented him from running away.

His thoughts were muddled and all over the place. A mother, a child…an unwelcomed intruder. Ah, such regular human problems. Oh, I already knew I’d enjoy playing with him. “You look a bit wobbly, Michael.” Within the blink of an eye, I had vanished from his sight and appeared right behind him, breathing down the back of his neck. Only to appear just a split second later, right where I stood, making him question his sanity. “Are you sure you are okay?” I forced a worried tone. I know I should probably let this child go. Maybe stuff a few dollars into his pocket so he didn’t have to worry about his mom’s low-paying job.

I couldn’t even blame the famous devil on my shoulder. I simply wanted to toy with him. The way he kept his chin up, the way he squared his shoulders. It would be a delight to make him tread more carefully in the future.

"Wait!"

The mention of his mother, of Sam, of being hungry…. Michael might be sleep-deprived and terrified… and he might not know exactly what the hell this creature was…. but he wasn't stupid. As the doorknob clicked and the door began to crack open, the familiar sound of Sam laughing in the kitchen drifted up into the hallway.

The panic over his own sanity was instantly eclipsed by something much deeper: the love of an older brother.
