@the-main-daine
my sketching process is honestly pretty simple, but i thought it might help other artists refine the process?
Those of you who follow my @alchemicalterror blog are aware of the current plotline that's shaken up Jonny boy's appearance a bit.
Here's a sneak peek at his redesign when the plotline's over!
now that the renders are done….
How about Wild Life, huh?
Life Series Render Designs
The final Set! Featuring Skizz, Tango, and Timmy.
(Now I can finally start putting these people in situations AKA Comics.)
Skizz:
If Impulse is an Imp, then Skizz is a Cherub.
When he's not a red name he's just the NICEST MAN he can't even kill a cow.
Which is such a fun flip to draw when he finally does go red.
Seriously the whole words of affirmations thing from Limited Life?
I'm kind of torn on the arm scars being scars or stripes and so the answer is both.
I love all the fracturing, singing, and tearing of the Red Name - the tie, the halo, and the wings all kind of go red along with his hair, I had fun with that.
He has the bluest blue eyes to ever blue.
I was gonna give him a dad bod like Imp but the arm muscles kinda took over I'm not sure what happened.
Tango:
God I love this design. A flaming jeroba with robot arms.
The gems in his hands indicate what life he's on.
I think maybe the goggles could also crack, and maybe his tail goes out like a spent match on Red? Or maybe the fire gets kind of greasy, haven't figured that out yet.
Bless this man for having the easiest outfit to color of everyone because his hair took FOREVER.
Tango Rage.exe is online. Prepare Speakers for Noises.
Timmy:
It finally seems like our dear ol' Canary got out of his cage.
I love drawing wings. I think the difference between 'avian' and 'angel' in this particular artstyle is the ear wing things.
He has such a comfy color scheme, I love blue and gold so much actually.
So many good lines too.
Love you Jimmy Jim Jim. Sorry for calling you Timmy.
Still, We Watch Him Closely, Do We Not?
Life Series Render Designs:
Featuring Ren, Scar and Scott!
Ren Diggity Dog:
A werewolf!
GOD I'M SO GLAD REN IS BACK I MISSED HIM SO MUCH.
That's not a design note I just needed to get that off my chest.
So I love Ren's whole personality as just this good dude who phrases things funny and sometimes goes mad with power.
Had to give him the best hair in the life series.
Also had to pay homage to the House of the Rising Sun.
I know he doesn't wear the dark glasses in the Life Series, but I'm making the color of the shine on his glasses reflect the heart level he's on as a sneaky little thing.
Red Winter Is Coming.
Scar:
Half... Elf? Catboy thing?
I don't know, he's a Scar. He has pointy ears and cat pupils and fangs.
So I love and admire Scar so much for all the visibility he brings to his disability and the things he deals with in his life, so I wanted to make sure my version of scar was visibly disabled. Man gets his cane and his leg braces, and I have so much love for the fandom for frequently including some sort of mobility aid with Scar Fanart.
I don't know it just sort of feels like he should have a ponytail, but it just sort of feels like he should have a ponytail.
I am So. Excited. To Draw. His Series. Specific. Skins.
Also he makes the best panic noises. No contest.
As a winner, he gets his crown, and the earth.
Scott Major:
This man is elf-coded and I will not be convinced otherwise.
He gets his winner's crown and his scars by his name.
I know he doesn't always have the orbiting crown of stars on every skin, but I think they're very iconic and will probably draw them whenever I'm not drawing a series-specific skin.
I actually love the Creaking Skin so much and there's going to be so much art about it and its progression through Wild Life. Cannot wait to add eyes to this boy.
He can be the drama if he wants to.
Life Series Character Renders:
Featuring Martyn, Mumbo and Pearl
(I actually have quite a lot to say about two of these this time.)
Martyn:
Human.... ish. Hear me out on this one:
So Martyn has this fascinating background lore to the Life Series called Watcher/Eyes and Ears Lore. I'm quietly obsessed with this.
I love watching his lore streams after every series, and have come up with a few theories on my own: His thumbnails are always fully illustrated, so his character has a canon 'look' for every season, which I think is just, deeply cool.
But in his lore, there's also this space between SMPs, where the Watchers kind of... hold people until they can be used again. And since Martyn is the protagonist of the very cool story he's writing, I got it in my head that in this space between, Martyn isn't QUITE human. Maybe he was at one point.
Maybe he never was, I don't know.
But alongside all the cracks and stuff that have started to show up on his body; there's seams along the joints, and light shining within, as he starts to become more befitting as a vessel.
A vessel for what? No idea. I probably won't be drawing all those seams in any fanart comics of the series themselves - I imagine they get covered up when he's sent out into the world to interact with others in various SMPs - but I thought the idea was too cool not to draw at least once.
As a past winner, he gets his crown, and the burning eye of Mars by his name.
Mumbo:
Vampire Mumbo!
I know he doesn't have the grey streak in his life series skin but I love it too much I'm keeping it forever.
It makes him look so much more threatening and serious than he is.
Poor Mumbo. I was really rooting for you buddy. Better luck next series!
At least he still does damage with those End Crystals.
Pearl:
A lunar moth
As a winner, she gets her crown, and she gets her moon.
I'm not going to lie I want that lunar moth hoodie more than anything.
I had a lot of fun with Pearl: Her skin design is so simple (Well, maybe not this season, but usually) that it leaves so much room to interpret it. She's always going around with dogs, making her wolfish would've been really easy, but I think Moth suits her more.
There's a lot of mythology with moths being a little off kilter, mad, or leading people to madness that I think fits with Pearl's tendency to be a little bit of a loose canon, wild and unpredictable. Like a moth's flight patterns.
Red Hood Pearl had to put in an appearance here, especially with how it's sort of creeping to overtake her in Wild Life this season, and she just gets so earnestly threatening when she's on a red life despite still being all smiles and all laughs.
Unlike Gem or Cleo, I think there's an edge to Pearlie Pop on red that just reminds me of a horror monster, in the best, best, best way.
I haven't figured out heights but she's also the tallest.
Life Series Render Designs
Next up we have Impulse, Joel and Lizzie!
Impulse:
An Imp or an Oni, but definitely a little devilish.
(Counterpart to Skizzly, who's a bit on the angelic side.)
Both the Tusks and the yellowed-out eyes were last minute editions and I've grown immediately attached to both.
Dad Bod Impulse is just so correct in my brain, I had to bring him to life as is.
I was actually chomping at the bit to draw this one. I don't have that many design notes, but god do I love him.
Joel:
A Tanuki!
Yeah I know he dresses as shrek, but @mellozheist has this adorable Tanuki Joel design for her hermitcraft videos and I was inspired.
The ears, tail, and pointy teeth make for some really fun illustrations with his angry outbursts
I don't think I've quite got a handle on the shape of his hair yet, but I am happy with everything else.
A r m s. He had the guns out in Wild Life, he's inescapably changed how I draw him now.
Lizzie:
A fairy! I don't feel the need to explain this one.
I gave her rainbow freckles and sunset wings, I think they're cute against how much blue she has in her outfit.
Honestly I don't remember why I covered one of her eyes, I had a reason when I did it though, and now I'm sticking to it.
She honestly has some of the funniest quotes in the entire series.
I don't actually know if that's how her clothes are supposed to work but they're how they work when I draw her, so there.
I imagine there's like, shorts under the skirt or something.
Those wings can detach and become teeny as needed.
(yourlocalcorviddad) *flies over here faster than Pam at free food in game* hi I love your art and like supporting it all
<3 the artist
welcome!!
Life Series Render Designs:
Featuring Etho, Gem and Grian!
Etho:
Silver Kitsune!
IDK, the idea of one of Minecraft's original, oldest Youtubers being a silver fox is just really funny to me.
Also because of the mask, having big ears and a tail to emote with will make him a lot more expressive (I will probably draw comics with these guys eventually, just knowing how I fanart.)
I am not immune to Eefo Propaganda.
I really like the idea of the triple-heart headband that gets scratched out over the course of a series. (Not sure how that'd work with series that don't go by a traditional 3-life system, though. Maybe they're filled in, go dark, then get scratched out?)
Half tempted to turn his shoulder-spots into hearts, too.
Gem:
A faun!
Already shows signs of going for heart-level skins, which I am super excited about drawing. (Like the eye change in Secret life, and the target on her overalls in Wild Life)
Also love the bandanna, it's so cute.
Her entire vibe is adorable but threatening, and that's honestly one of the most fun to capture.
This is also when I started adding quotes to some of these, as I've been drawing them in semi-alphabetical order.
In my heart of hearts, that heart on her overalls is made of sequins.
Grian:
A red macaw, conditionally.
Of course I had to draw Watcher Grian, I am not immune to Watcher Propaganda.
God I love drawing feathers. Figuring out how to fit a Macaw's feather pattern into the ear-wings was super fun, I think I did a pretty good job?
The scaled hands and feet are not going to show up on any of the other bird-folk on this series, that's a unique to Grian thing.
As another winner, Grian also gets a little crown and the sun near his name.
I love Grian's sense of humor and how wild and delighted his laugh is, how often he audibly claps at stuff that happens throughout the series, and how easily he makes things fun for other players, so I really wanted to pay homage to that.
Life Series Render Designs:
With a new life series upon us, I've dusted off my tablet to try my hand at solidifying how I draw each of the 18 lifers.
I'm going to post them in bursts of 3, with notes if there are any notes.
Today, we have Bdubs, BigB, and Cleo!
Bdubs!
Human Design. (Not all of them will be!)
I wanted to capture the essence of Bdubs being just a li'l guy.
Rounded shoulders, rounded face, rounded body shape; BDubs is friend-shaped.
His expressiveness is one of the most fun parts of the character, and since I drew him first, he's why all of these have three expressions in addition to the full body.
I know bandages aren't part of his skins, but I feel like they fit the vibe.
BigB!
Also a human design!
Tall, broad-shouldered, and handsome.
VERY tired eyes, in my head BigB has seen some Things(tm) that are starting to weigh on him, hence the blood splatter on his skin.
He also always seems both so sweet and easy to sympathize with, and also so sarcastic and so good at sowing doubt with just tone of voice, I'd be doing him a disservice not to include both of those in his facial expressions.
His hair was super fun to draw. I DO not know if I'm interpreting that neckline right.
I need to draw Creaking BigB once I'm done with this set.
Cleo!
A Zombie, obviously. (Though I will need to draw the zombie apocalypse survivor at least once.)
Her mad, scary rage when she throws caution to the wind is honestly some of my favorite stuff to watch in the Life Series.
As the winner of Real Life, she gets a crown! And Jupiter, to honor her win.
This design is so colorful, and so bright, but I couldn't resist adding a few extra things like the yellowing eyes and teeth.
I am definitely a fan of 'Big Cleo' designs. She has too much of a belly laugh not to draw her larger than life.
With all the life series character renders queued, please enjoy what was, in my personal opinion, perhaps the funniest tired deadpan of a line I've ever heard in the entire snail massacre that was episode 3 of Wild Life.
follows you from discord at the speed of that owl from the tootsie pop commercial
I love drawing cute couple-y shit more than anything; have some ships.
While character art and illustration are definitely the vast majority of my artwork (99% if not more) - I still find these kinds of shape and color and light studies incredibly valuable.
Every so often I'll sit down and do something simple with new brushes or focus on making sure I still remember what all the layer settings do, to try and make sure that whatever my current level of art ability is at, I'm doing the most with it that I can.
Drew this immediately after seeing the session 2 skins, and I still kind of love it, though Impulse is missing….
I kind of feel bad about that I was just so excited about creaking scott and part red pearlie.
I'll get proper team art sometime after I finish the design sheets
Epilepsy warning: The process video above flashes several times during its six minute run time as I work on background lighting levels.
