Swordtember 2021 - Day 17 - Carrion

“The wretched scythe-blade of a Corpse-Feeder; no longer human, these worshippers of death have taken on aspects of the vulture - which they believe to be the earthly vessel of their fallen Dread-God - and so too have their blades, the dark wings of their guards now known as a terrible omen of the things worse still than death itself...”

Scraping in under the wire, I have finished today’s sword with but minutes to spare! AND I’m really happy with it!!! I knew I wanted to make a sick vulture themed sword as soon as I picked Carrion for the prompt list - full offence but they’re rad as fuck.

Swordtember 2021 - Day 16 - Alive

“Adventurers beware! While it might often be said that one should never look a gift horse in the mouth, a mysterious sword lying on the ground is another matter entirely! Always be on the look-out for Mimics, as you never know what form they might take in pursuit of their next meal!”

It took me a while, but I’m not gonna lie, I love this sword! I was excited for ‘Alive’ when I made the prompt list, and even though I started today not excited by the prospect of doing two swords, I’m really glad I took the time to make this sword one I’m proud of :)

Anyway the Mimic Sword is my baby now. Also it is eating my hand.

Swordtember 2021 - Day 15 - Beloved

“Longsword of the Heart-Sworn Covenant, a curious and delightful band of crusaders who fight duels on the behalf of divided lovers - this includes challenges of honour, fighting off unwanted suitors, and even rescuing people kidnapped away from their true loves.”

Campy Sailor Moon-y pink heart sword for Beloved, partly because I have to do 2 today and I didn’t want to think too hard about the concept lmao.

And the reason I have to do 2 today, is because yesterday I literally forgot I was doing Swordtember, and just, didn’t even think about drawing a sword at all, all day, until right as I got into bed OTL So that’s where I’m at, mentally.

Swordtember 2021 - Day 14 - Zodiac

“The Zodiacal Blade is a rare and mysterious treasure, its origins shrouded in legend and lore. Some say it was a gift from the Gods, others believe it was in fact stolen from the Gods by a wily thief, who spent the remainder of their days fleeing their retribution. Its power waxes and wanes with the movement of the stars over head, and it is strongest when held by someone born to the star sign currently in play.”

I was honestly expecting to have a real hard time with Zodiac - but in the end I knew what I wanted to do, and I executed it in a way that I’m happy with. The Zodiacal Dial is my own modification of the dial on the Astrological Clocktower at Prague (Which, I’m obsessed with) that I created several months ago as a mock-up of what is now painted on my bedroom ceiling! So I’m an asset reusing king.

Swordtember 2021 - Day 13 - Repaired

“Many different scholars have attempted to restore damaged artifacts to their former glory; and among them, some have taken to the use of gold, highlighting the item’s history rather than obfuscating it.”

I high-key hate today's sword, but I was not gonna let it eat up any more of today than absolutely necessary, so IDGAF.

Swordtember 2021 - Day 12 - Ceramic

“An heirloom of a bygone age, this ceramic blade is believed to have been used ceremonially, but little else can be gleamed about its hazy origins.”

I decided to push yesterday's sword to today so that I could spend some time reading instead. I really didn’t want to do it today either, and now I have another to do T^T

Swordtember 2021 - Day 11 - Glass

“This intricate and carefully made dagger is the result of the combined skills and labours of the Royal Blacksmith and his husband, the Royal Glass-Worker, which they presented to the Crown Princess as a wedding gift. Although delicate, its edge is deadly sharp, mimicking and complimenting the Princess’ own wit and disposition.”

Good grief this one gave me some freaking trouble I tell you what! I spent more time trying to get the colours and the lighting to look good than I did on the design and the lineart, and those took they sweet ass time too! And to top it off rendering the background details straight up crashed my program WHEN I HADN’T SAVED AT ALL YET, so I very nearly lost EVERYTHING, after over 3 hours of work.

Swordtember 2021 - Day 10 - Luminescent

“The Holy Lunar Greatsword, though lost and broken, is still imbued with the Goddess’ power, and this magic is revealed where the moon’s light touches it, encouraging the vegetation which now steadily consumes the blade to sprout pale, luminescent flowers, which themselves evoke an echo of the moon’s light.”

Today I just relaxed and took my time painting in all the little flowers - each one is completely unique, unlike my usual copy/pasting - and other than that all I did was remix the colours again, this time making everything bluer and brighter, rather than greener and duller.

And that’s the end of this little series on the Moonlight Greatsword :) Back to drawing all new swords tomorrow.

Swordtember 2021 - Day 9 - Ruined

“The lost blade, left to languish among the ruins of that forgotten battlefield, now sports a fine coat of moss and vines, its once glimmering blade and sparkling gemstones hidden beneath an eon of dirt...”

Today is the first day so far where rather than drawing a whole new sword, I’m recontextualising yesterday’s sword by adding new details and effects (And spoiler alert so will be tomorrow) and I had a lot of fun messing around with brush textures and trying out ways to create the effect I wanted!

Swordtember 2021 - Day 8 - Fallen

“The legendary greatsword of the fabled Moon King, who fell in battle defending his kingdom. This holy relic, which the Moon King found as a revelation from the Lunar Goddess, was lost following his defeat, and never recovered.”

I was reluctant to start in on today's sword - just felt really lethargic in general since waking up - but I’m happy with how it turned out! I decided to make this sword my own take on the Soul’s series recurring Moonlight Greatsword, and if you know the games you might have already picked up on the inspiration - from the shape of the blade to the patterns along it to the gold and blue colouring, I wasn’t subtle with my homage haha.

This actually marks the beginning of a short series of connected prompts; Fallen - Ruined - Luminescent. I’m going to be re-using this sword for the next two prompts to tell a short story of sorts - not dissimilar from what I did with Divine Relic & Corrupted Relic, or Moon & Sun last year!

Swordtember 2021 - Day 7 - Clockwork

“The greatsword of a Timekeeper; a potent Chronomancer and guardian of time. The blade serves as a catalyst to channel their magics, but also a timepiece which keeps pace with whatever timeline it finds itself in.”

I spent about 2.5 hours on this one and so much of that was just futzing with the circles and cogs. It’s a minor detail in the final piece, but I really like the day-night dial at the base of the blade, I had a lot of fun drawing the clouds and making the gradient for the background :)

Swordtember 2021 - Day 6 - Decaying

“The ethereal and poison-steeped dagger of a Druid who fell to darkness; once a majestic simulacrum of the Druid’s own soul, it now rots from within as it is slowly consumed by the terribly things which lurk in the dark.”

I decided to make today’s sword a kind of call back to my ‘Nature’ sword from last Swordtember, which was just a stick with a glowy sword over top. It didn’t come out exactly as I wanted it to, but perfect is the enemy of finished, so it’ll do!

Swordtember 2021 - Day 5 - Mystic

“A Witch’s gladius for self defence; it bears myriad blessings and enchantments to ward off evil and help the Witch stay the path so that any journey might find them safely home, and can be carried in the form of a charm - worn as a necklace or earring, until such time as it is needed.”

I spent what felt like AGES on this sword, but actually it was only like 2 hours, which is less than I spent on the last one so, idk what to tell ya. I went in extremely uncertain as to what I was gonna do, but the first idea I tried out - having it be a little sword with colourful runes and having it be kinda charm-like - landed really solidly with me so even though it felt like a long process, it wasn’t that hard-fought!

Swordtember 2021 - Day 4 - Steam-Powered

“A strange and wonderful invention brought about by the technological revolution of steam power, this unique ‘sword’ which uses its built-in furnace and steam funnel to turn the serrated blade at its tip sadly never took on, and was left to rust in the darkest corner of the workshop of its dejected inventor.”

This one took me a while, I’m not gonna lie. I wasn’t too sure what I was gonna do going in, and I spent a while working out a sketch (in contrast to the previous swords which I knew vaguely what I wanted and threw down a super rough sketch in like 2 minutes) and throwing ideas at the wall to see what stuck. I think it took me like 2-2.5 hours, at least, but I’m really happy with how it came out, so that’s okay by me!

I’m posting this a day late because I didn’t find the time & desire/ability to draw it yesterday, but I’m going to do Day 5 later and get back on track (hopefully).

Swordtember 2021 - Day 3 - Eldritch

“A broken-off greatsword, recovered from the ruins of a town which was succumbed by the sea long ago, but mysteriously resurfaced; the curious thing is that the town was not by the sea, yet sunk into it all the same.”

I woke up tonight and had an hour to rush out this sword with basically no prior planning - I wish I could have done something a bit more interesting with the background, but it is what it is! I’m happy with the sword all the same.

Swordtember 2021 - Day 2 - Dainty

“A Gentlewoman’s Duelling Sabre; designed with a focus on appearing refined and elegant, yet made of such hard-yet-lightweight materials that even the most aristocratic and high-born might defend themselves with little training and relative ease.”

Again I had a strong vision going into this - I knew I wanted to make a more slender sword, originally a rapier, I thought a sabre would be a little more interesting, and I knew I wanted a hand guard which evoked doilies, but in the end I leant way harder into the idea of it mimicking a lady’s umbrella or parasol, as if you might see an 18th century aristocrat in full Marie Antoinette regalia with this daintily held over one shoulder hehe. I’m quite pleased with it honestly!
