âYou know, some of these stars could be dead right now. I love how we can still see their light even after theyâre gone.â Maisie finds herself sitting on the outcrop of roof outside of Harperâs room, one of her favorite memories playing out in her dreams once again.
Maisie hums in agreement. âI guess humans are kind of like stars too. Even after theyâre gone, they donât really leave us. We can still see them everywhere in our lives. The things they did for us.â Maisieâs eyes become misty as she speaks, thinking of her late foster mother, Laelynn. Harper is silent for a beat, then she suddenly gets up and climbs through the window back into her room. Maisie can hear her rummaging around until she reappears through the window.
âWell, this was supposed to be for your birthday, but Mom wasnât supposed to die⊠So, I think you should have it now.â Harper hands Maisie a small, round, white box with a bright yellow bow on top. It almost looked like a daisy, Maisieâs favorite flower. Maisie tugs on the bow lightly and it falls away. When she opens the box, her breath catches.
Itâs a simple gold, circular pendant made to look like a compass. She turns it over, already knowing the coordinates that are engraved there by heart. The coordinates to the Harvelleâs Roadhouse, or rather where it used to stand before it was blasted to ruins by demons.
Maisie has been waiting on this gift for years. Harper and Jo had gotten identical ones, passed down by their moms. And now Maisie has Laelynnâs. Picking the necklace from the box, she merely lets it set in her hand at first, trying to feel all the history it held. She swears, if only for a second, she could feel Laelynn with her.
Maisie hands the necklace to Harper and turns her back so her sister can secure it for her. Once itâs in place, Maisie knows sheâll never take it off.
âThank you, Harp.â Maisie pulls her sister in for a hug and doesnât let go.Â
Maisie wakes with a start, confusion mixed with grogginess making her head pound. She slowly takes in her surroundings, wondering how she got to her old room in California. She doesnât even remember falling asleep. The last thing she remembers is telling her dad where to find Momma Q.
Maisie tries to get to her feet, but has to lean on her bedpost for support. Her eyes are still heavy and her limbs feel burdensome. Suddenly, a man's loud, angry voice makes her flinch. It almost sounds like her dad, but she has never heard him raise his voice.
Making it to the door, she slowly pulls it open and shuffles down the hall towards the voices in the living room. She can now hear another, weaker voice, but there is a short bald-headed dude and a wiry woman with wild auburn hair, blocking her view.
âYouâll pay for what you took from me,â the first voice says, but this time itâs a quiet anger, his words coming out in a low growl.
âIâll pay with my life if I have to. But you leave my daughters out of it.â Maisie realizes with a start, that the second voice is Momma Q. Her head throbs painfully as she tries to put the pieces together of whatâs happening, but what Peter says next makes her heart stop.
âMaybe I could have left Harper out of it if she could have minded her own goddamn business! But I took care of her. I would have gotten rid of that little redhead too if it werenât for that bitch of a witch I had to deal with. In the end, you are all that really stands in the way of an eternity with my daughter.â Maisie breaks from her shocked trance, when she realizes Momma Q is now gasping for breath. She reaches for her knife, but it isnât there. All she can do is try to talk her father down.
Maisie rushes forward, breaking through the barrier of the two vampires. The sight of her only living mother fighting for her life at the hands of her father makes Maisie sick to her stomach.
âDad, stop! Please,â Maisie begs, her voice cracking. She runs forward, trying to pry her fatherâs fingers away from around Momma Qâs neck. The two vampire lackeys suddenly seem to remember their job, and surge forward to restrain Maisie.
âIâm sorry, sweetheart, I didnât mean for you to see this. In time, you will understand. And we will have more than enough time.â Peter turns back to Quincy, a sick smile playing on his lips as he tightens his grip. Quincyâs movements become less volatile, her strength giving out.
Maisie pulls and kicks against the vampires restraining her, but she has no leverage to pull free. She screams for her mother until her voice is hoarse, even after Quincyâs arms drop and her legs stop thrashing. Peter bares his fangs, and Maisie has to squeeze her eyes shut before he plunges them into Quincyâs neck, draining the last drops of life from her body.
Maisie hears Momma Qâs body thud to the ground, but it sounds far off. Her captors finally release their hold on her and she simply crumples to the floor. She doesnât want to open her eyes. She doesnât want to see her dead motherâs body that she knows is only inches away from her. Silent tears stream down her face. Only one thought ricochets in her mind until she loses all consciousness.
âItâs all my fault.â
As Philip sets the plane down without so much as a bump, Harper breathes a sigh of relief. âHey, we didnât die in a tragic, fiery plane crash. Not that I doubted you, Phillip, because apparently you can do everything,â she quips, trying to distract herself from the anxiety their current situation has caused.
âThe less you know about me, the better.â Phillip returns coolly.
âOkay, thatâs not ominous at all. Thanks for the ride, daa- dude. Da dude. Itâs surfer talk, weâre in California now, gotta blend in.â Harper flimsily tries to recover from the fact that she almost called Philip dad. Thereâs an awkward silence before Simone pipes up.
âUm, evil vampire on the loose with your kidnapped sister ring a bell?â Everyone nods in agreement and starts to file out of the small plane. Harper brings up the rear, but before she starts down the steps, Phillip calls her name.
âYeah?â Harper looks back at him expectantly. He stands up and puts a hand on her shoulder.
âJust be careful, kid. Call me when youâre ready to bring Maisie home,â Phillip says.
âYou are always there when we call, huh?â Harper muses.
âWell, what can I say? Youâd get yourself killed if I didnât. As an officer of the law, I canât have people dying on my watch if I can help it. Especially if itâs family.â Harper is surprised to hear Phillip say something so heartfelt, even if his face still portrays no emotion. âAlright, dismissed,â Phillip pats her shoulder and heads back to the cockpit. Taking a deep breath, Harper puts on a brave face.
âSir, yes, sir.â She mocks a salute before heading after the rest of the group.
First things first, Harper needs to make sure they are on the right track. She pulls out her phone and tries Momma Q. No answer. Next, she calls the facility where Momma Q stays. When they tell her that Quincy has been checked out by a man claiming to be their uncle, Harper is oddly calm. It is close enough to the answer she was expecting.
âWhat did they say?â Sam asks as soon as she hangs up. She simply shakes her head.
âUncle Peter took her for a trip,â Harper spits his name out like it leaves a bad taste in her mouth.
âWhere would he take her?â Dean asks gruffly. Harper gives him a look that says âlose the attitude or Iâll kick your assâ.
âOh yeah, I just forgot to mention the detailed notes on his plans I found in his diary.â Harper sasses back in annoyance. Sam steps between them, hands out to keep them at bay.
âGuys, now is not the time! Weâre all worried about Maisie, but itâs not going to help her if weâre at each otherâs throats.â Sam looks between them and makes sure they nod their agreement before he stands down.
âWe can start at our family home. I donât know that weâll find anything but itâs a better place to think than this dirty airport parking lot at six in the morning. We need a ride, though.â As soon as Harper finishes her thought, Simone pulls up in a little red Ford Escort.
âGet in, losers,â Simone calls out through the open window. Sam and Dean eye the car skeptically.
âYou couldnât have stolen anything bigger?â Dean whines.
âItâs inconspicuous,â Simone shoots back. âAnd I thought it would be funny to see you and Sam trying to squeeze in the backseat,â she adds with a shrug. Dean rolls his eyes so hard he gives himself a headache. Sam turns to Harper, hoping she will save them from Simoneâs pettiness.
âI call shotgun,â is all Harper says, opening the door and moving the seat up for the boys. âYou wanna waste our time hotwiring another car?â Harper questions expectantly. The boys grumble assent to her point and fold themselves into the limited space of the backseat.
Sitting on her old bed, Maisie stares blankly at the wall; her thoughts and feelings ground to a halt when Momma Qâs body hit the carpet of her childhood home. The world around her faded away, feeling unreal and dream-like. At least, she hopes this is another dream, but the stirring in her gut tells her itâs all too real.
Peter pushes open the door, his posture more lighthearted than usual, unsympathetic to his daughterâs distress. The vampire watching over Maisie leaves the room at Peterâs command.
âSorry you had to see that sweetheart. I thought my underlings would have kept a better eye on you,â Peter says, a slight edge to his voice, but it perks up as he continues. âOh well, whatâs done is done.â He pauses, gauging Maisieâs reaction, but she doesnât even look at him. Â âI hoped you would see this from my perspective, Maisie.â
âAnd what perspective is that?â Maisie means to come off spiteful, but the words fall flat and defeated.
Peter sits down next to Maisie, trying to catch her eye as he props his elbow on his knee and gestures with his other hand as he speaks. âShe took you from me, all those years ago. And Iâve been looking for you every day since. Quincy, she would have done the same all again just to protect you from me, your own father.â
When Maisie doesnât respond again, Peter sighs and runs a hand through his hair. âEverything Iâve done is because I didnât want to lose you again.â
âWhat about Harper?â Maisie finds her anger again. He may be able to justify to himself why he did this to Quincy, but not her sister. Harper didnât steal her away; they simply had each otherâs backs throughout the years. âWhat did she do to deserveâŠâ Her voice trails off, as does the anger, at the thought of what had become of her sister.
Peter sighs dramatically, as if her questions are nothing but a nuisance. âShe would have stopped me too, sweetheart. She didnât understand the vision.â
That piques Maisieâs interest, and her curiosity gets the best of her. âThe vision?â
Peterâs eyes twinkle as he responds, âThe vision thatâs kept me going all these years. Eternity with my daughter.â
The sky is starting to lighten as Simone parks their little car around the corner from the house, out of direct view. Everyone hops out, and walks down the road to catch a glimpse of the house. A few vampires linger outside, keeping an eye on the street and surrounding homes for anything suspicious. The group takes a step back to stay out of sight while they figure out a plan.
âSo, who has ideas?â Sam asks, glancing to his brother and the girls.
âLetâs walk in, guns blazing,â Dean offers, looking restless, but Harper immediately shakes her head. âWell, machetes blazing.â
âAnd draw a shit ton of attention to the house? No, weâve gotta do this quietly.â Harper stares off into the distance, clenching and unclenching her fists as she thinks. âIâll sneak in, and pull Maisie out.â
Sam shakes his head fervently. âYouâre not going in alone.â
Harper frowns at him. âI know how to sneak into this house, I did it a million times growing up.â
âYeah, but like Peter said earlier, your sneaking skills suck, Harp.â Simone responds honestly.
âReally? Now weâre bringing this up?â Harper throws her a frustrated glance. Simone shrugs as if to say âsure, why not.â
Dean looks to Harper, slightly confused. âDid he really say that?â
âBasically,â Simone says before Harper can get a word in.
âYou gotta be fucking kidding me, we donât have time for this,â Harper mumbles her thoughts out loud. âIâm going in, whether you like it or not. I made this mess, and Iâm going to get my sister out of it.â
âYou didnât make anything, Peter did.â Sam interjects. âAt least let someone go with you.â
âNo, thereâs more risk if anyone else goes. Iâve got this, okay?â Harperâs voice softens toward the end. âJust let me do this,â she says; thereâs a pleading tone to her voice as she stares Sam down.
His shoulders slump. âFine,â he sighs out.
âIf something goes wrong, weâll go with Deanâs idea, sound good?â Harper sounds matter-of-fact about it, as if âwrongâ couldnât really be that bad. Dean and Simone nod, but Sam hesitates. Harper reciprocates the gesture before turning toward the house and her sister.
Samâs hand wraps around hers when they are a few feet away from Dean and Simone. âFor the record, I hate this,â he says with a half-hearted smile as she turns back to him.
Harper gives him a little smirk. âI know, but Iâll be back with Maisie soon enough.â
Thereâs a silence as Sam looks away for a moment, still holding her hand in his. Harper impatiently glances to the house, not wishing to wait another second.
âRelax, Iâll be back before you know it,â she says, giving him a forced smile.
âJust let her go already,â Simone talks a little louder so the couple can hear her. Harper cracks a smile in her direction before looking to Sam again.
âDonât miss me too much while Iâm gone,â she nudges him jokingly, slipping her hand out of his, and heads toward her childhood home to save her sister and fix this mess.
Harper peers around the corner to catch a glimpse of her old house; it is across the road and a few houses down from her vantage point. An idea pops into Harperâs head, and she cringes, knowing itâs the best way. Stripping off her jacket, she throws it back at Sam, standing by Dean and Simone now.
âWhat are you doing?â Dean asks in confusion as Sam catches it.
âIâm going jogging,â Harper shrugs before taking off down the street at a reasonable pace. She passes in front of her childhood home, feeling the gaze of the vampires keeping watch, but she keeps her eyes forward. Thereâs only two of them, one of them sitting on the steps of the front porch, the other sitting on the porch swing, trying to look casual.
Once sheâs made it around the bend of the road to the neighbors house, she slows to a stop, hiding behind a row of tall bushes along the front yard. Rounding the neighborâs house, Harper sneaks through their backyard and notices another vampire patrolling the back of her childhood home. She ducks behind another bush, watching as the vampire walks toward her and into the alley between the two houses.
Harper sees her opportunity, quickly and quietly walking up behind the vampire, machete in hand. She hefts the machete at his neck, slicing off his head. The body thumps softly as it hits the grass. She quickly grabs the body and head, dragging them behind the house to keep them out of sight.
Harper then crouches low as she softly pads over to the back of her childhood home and peeks into the window of Maisie old room. Maisie is on her bed and a short, Charlie Brown looking vampire, is at the door with his arms crossed over his chest. Harper takes a deep breath to steel herself, pulling her machete back out from its sheath before knocking softly on the window. She presses herself against the side of the house, waiting for the vampire to pop his head out. Her heart hammers in her chest, as the window slowly slides up and open.
The vampireâs bald head pops out of the window and Harper brings her machete down, cleanly severing his head from his body. She awkwardly hops through the window, shoving the body out of the way as she goes.
âHey,â Harper says lamely as her feet hit the carpet. Maisie stares in disbelief at Harper standing before her, alive and well. She jumps to her feet, surprise giving way to her need to hug her sister and to know she hasnât lost everything. As soon as she takes a step toward Harper, though, Maisie can smell her. The scent is so strong it overcomes all other emotions or senses. Maisie can feel the hunger building, and fear grips her heart.
Instead of welcoming Harper into her arms, she suddenly pushes her away. The force of Maisieâs shove surprises Harper almost more than the action itself, sending her across the room and crashing into the door. Grabbing onto the door handle to pull herself up, Harper tries to shake off the pain and confusion.
âMaisie? What the fuck was that?â Harper demands. Maisie looks at her shaking hands in shock.
âI- He turned me. Harp, Iâm becoming a vampire,â Maisie chokes out, wrapping her arms around her torso. She canât look at Harper, not wanting to see how her sister looks at her now. Â
Harper holds her breath, waiting for something to give. Sheâs going to wake up any minute. Or Maisie is going to smile and say itâs only a joke. It canât be real.
Without even realizing sheâs taken it out, Harper is pressing her phone to her ear. It rings once before Samâs voice rings out in her ear. It takes her a minute to find her voice.
âSam?â She says quietly. Sheâs not even sure what to say.
âHarper, what is it? You ready for backup?â Sam asks desperately.
âPeter⊠H- he changed Maisie into a- a, um, and I donât know what to do, tell me what to do,â Harper chokes out, eyes flying around the room.
âHas she drank human blood yet?â Sam asks, trying to keep himself level-headed for Harperâs sake.
Harper looks to her sister, relaying the question, and Maisie shakes her head. âNo, she hasnât,â Harper answers into the phone, unable to look away from Maisie.
âOkay, thatâs good. She hasnât fully transitioned then. Dean and I can make a cure, but we need the blood of the vampire who turned her, so Peterâs, right?â
âYeah,â Harper breathes out.
âWeâre coming, hold tight. Tell Maisie itâs going to be okay. It is going to be okay, Harper,â Samâs calm voice evens her breathing. She believes him.
âOkay. Itâs going to be okay, Maisie,â Harper repeats, trying to keep Samâs calm in her own voice as she tries to help Maisie believe it too.
Maisie finally looks up to meet her sisters earnest gaze. In a split second, Harperâs head is turned at an odd angle, and there is a strange crunching sound. Time seems to slow as Maisie watches Harperâs body fall lifelessly to the ground.
âSometimes, you have to do things yourself,â Peterâs voice cuts through Maisieâs haze. Suddenly, time speeds up to the point that Maisie no longer registers her actions. She is consumed by a blind rage, and she cannot be stopped.
When the world comes back into focus, she is standing in the living room, over her decapitated father, blood on her hands. She looks up at sound of Sam, Dean, and Simone bursting through the front door.
Sam yells Harperâs name as he runs through the house, while Dean heads straight to Maisie. Simone lingers over Peterâs body for a moment, nodding grimly, before following after Sam.
Stopping abruptly in the doorway to Maisieâs old room, Samâs eyes immediately falling to Harper, crumpled and broken on the ground. Simone brings a hand up to cover her mouth as she gasps in horror. She had seen so much death, but this⊠This was something she was not expecting.
âHarper?â Samâs voice barely comes out above a whisper. âHarper, please donât do this to me,â he breathes out, as he falls to his knees beside her and rolls Harper onto her back. He pushes the hair gently away from her face, hoping and praying to see some sign of life in her. The sinking feeling in his gut tells him there isnât any hope.
Harperâs eyes are open, but the empty, lifeless stare strips away any shred of denial and false hope that Sam was holding onto. Tears fill his eyes as he pulls Harper into his arms, cradling her limp form close to himself. She feels heavier than usual, the weight of the situation slowly crushing down on him.
He stares down at her through his tears, realizing there wonât be a tomorrow with her. He wonât hold her in his arms, or feel the warmth of her touch again. She wonât be beside him when he wakes up every morning. There will be a constant empty space where she used to be, that no one else could ever fill. Sam lets out one sob after another as he clings to Harper, wishing he could talk to her one more time, to hear her voice wash over him.
Dean finds Maisie in the hallway staring blankly down at Peterâs severed head. He takes her face in his hands and tries to draw her attention.
âMaisie? Baby, are you okay?â Maisie sees the movement of Deanâs lips, but no words connect with her mind. The sound of blood rushing in her ears is deafening. Not her blood, though. Deanâs blood. The machete she hadnât even realized she was holding clatters to the floor as she pushes away from Dean. She must have grabbed the machete Harper brought in with her to go after Peter.
Harper; Maisieâs stomach lurches as she remembers the last sight of her sister. Stumbling down the hallway, she can now here Samâs cries. Seeing Sam crumpled on the floor, cradling her sisterâs body to him like she is the only thing he can feel, stops Maisie at the door like an iron fist had clamped down on her feet. The tears come faster than her breathing. She wants to go to them, to hold onto Harper. She wants to go back in time, tell Harper she is right and never let Peter back into her life.
All she can do is lean against the doorway as her legs give away. She slides down to the floor, sobs wracking her whole body. Maisie crashes her eyes shut against a world blurred by her own tears. Tears she didnât deserve to cry. Tears wonât bring Harper back. Tears canât wash away the fact that her sister was dead because of her.

The soft glow of Harperâs lamp spills out onto the small outcrop of roof Maisie and Harper are perched on. The stars are shining brighter by the minute as dusk settles into the night. Taking a sip of her Triple Black Smirnoff, Maisie rests her head on her big sisterâs shoulder.
âYou can say them out loud if you want,â Maisie says, knowing her sister is going over all of the constellations in her head. Itâs her favorite hobby.
âWell, you ought to know them all by now,â Harper comments, sipping on her own drink.
âThatâs the Big Dipper, right?â Maisie points to the obviously smaller dipper, a mischievous glint in her eyes as she looks up at her sister. Harper sighs heavily, shaking her head.
âHilarious.â Harper puts the cool glass to her lips again, savoring her drink and the view. âYou know, some of these stars could be dead right now. I love how we can still see their light even after theyâre gone.â
Harper turns to Maisie who lifts her head so theyâre facing each other. âIâm sorry, Maisie. But youâll still see me,â Harper says softly. Â
âWh-what are you talking about?â Maisieâs face scrunches up in confusion, not understand the turn this conversation has taken. Harper puts a hand on Maisieâs shoulder, looking at her intensely.
âIâll still be here with you. Always.â
Harper begins to slip away from Maisieâs focus even as she tries to hold on to her. To ask her what she means. Suddenly, the glow of Harperâs lamp is replaced by the hallway light spilling into Maisie room. The roof is replaced by Maisieâs bed, and Harper is replaced by her father shaking her shoulders to wake her.
âMaisie youâve got to get up,â Peter says urgently. Maisie wipes her bleary eyes, blinking up at her dad, still confused by her dream. It was one of her favorite memories with Harper, when they had finally moved into the Safehouse and made it feel like home. It definitely hadnât ended like that. Â She didnât have time to find the answer, though, with her dad trying to get her up.
âWhatâs going on, dad? Are you okay?â Maisie asks, sitting up and trying to get her bearings.
âWe have to leave the city. Vampires have Harper and Iâm sure theyâll come for you next,â Peter only half explains, tossing a pair of shoes at Maisieâs feet before grabbing her hand and trying to pull her up from her bed.
âWhat the fuck does that mean?â Maisie questions, her groggy brain trying to make sense of the situation. She hastily slips the shoes on then follows after Peter who is still tugging on her hand.
âThereâs no time to explain we have to hurry if we want to make it out alive,â Peter urges as they hurry down the stairs and out the back door towards Peterâs van. The same one as the VonVampâs but they didnât need it now that they were dead so Peter put it to use.
âIf some vampires have Harper, we have to go get her back,â Maisie says as Peter opens the passenger side of the van, making sure she gets in before shutting it firmly. He jumps in the driver side, the van already running, and immediately starts to pull out of the dirt driveway.
âDo you know where Harper is? Weâre going to find her, right?â Maisie presses, her mind waking up now.
âWe canât go back, we have to stay ahead of them. We should go to your mother, once the other vampires find youâre not here theyâll use Harper to get to her next.â Peter pulls out onto the road and floors it.
âWhy do they have Harper!? How did they get to her!? Dad!â Maisie keeps questioning Peter, still trying to make some sense of all this, but Peter shakes his head.
âIt doesnât matter, we just have to focus on getting to Quincy. Where is she, Maisie?â Peter asks urgently. Maisie runs a shaky hand through her hair; Maisie and Harper had always kept Momma Qâs location a secret. Hunters made a lot of enemies, and they couldnât take any chances. But she had no choice. Her whole family could be in danger.
âSheâs in San Francisco.â
Two Hours Earlier
Itâs the dead of night, but Las Vegas is still awake, as Harper and Simone traverse the streets. Harper had waited until Maisie was sound asleep in bed before sneaking out to meet with Simone. This is the fifth night of stalking Peter since returning home from Texas. The ambience of the city offsets the silence between the girls. The neon lights of the strip club glare against the dark street, uninteresting people entering the building.
Harper lets out an exasperated sigh, feeling impatient about the lack of evidence since sheâs gotten back. Peter always seemed to do the same thing every night. Heâd come to âHunk OâManiaâ for a few hours before going back to the Safehouse. It is suspicious, but it isnât concrete evidence that heâs doing something wrong. And they couldnât exactly just stroll into the club looking for evidence. Or at least, Harper couldnât.
âWhy donât you just go in there and see what heâs up to?â Harper asks, glancing over to Simone, who rolls her eyes as if the answer is obvious. âPeterâs the only one that would know you, right?â
She shakes her head slightly. âMost of his old crew know me.â
âHow?â
Simoneâs expression grows deadly serious, guilt flashing across her features briefly. âUsed to be a part of their little group, back when I was a newbie vampire that didnât know any better. Not my proudest moment.â Harper isnât surprised by this revelation, but it still makes her feel uneasy. âIâm doing my best to make up for it now.â
Harper nods, unsure of what to say. âWe all fuck up sometimes.â
âMmm,â is all Harper gets as a response. Simone straightens up suddenly, eyes glued to the club. âMovement out back,â she whispers before quietly taking toward the alley.
Harper follows behind, trying to catch a glimpse around Simone. She gently nudges Harper back, as she peers around the corner of the neighboring building, watching the alley. Simone looks back to Harper, mouthing âPeterâ before turning back to watch him. The anticipation starts to build in Harper, hoping and praying for this to be something big. After a long minute, Simone motions to follow. They quietly walk down the alley, avoiding discarded trash and litter on the cement.
Harper catches a last second glance of Peter as he enters a small abandoned building behind the club, and she wants nothing more than to keep following. Simone, however, holds her back for a few minutes, quietly watching the building for any further movement.
Finally, they make their way to the door, easing it open quietly and checking to make sure no one is around. The door leads them into what used to be an old storage room; now itâs simply filled with litter and empty wooden boxes. The girls set off, exploring the building to figure out where Peter had gone inside.
A faint creaking noise echoes through the building. They follow it as best they can figure, weaving in between rows of the shelves and boxes. Finally making it through the maze to the back of the building, they find a shelf pushed out of the way to reveal a low doorway in the wall.
Simone peeks in the doorway first, making sure no one is right inside, and she finds an empty hallway leading straight towards a rusty staircase going up.
âYou stay put. Iâll go up first and check it out,â Simone commands, holding up a hand to silence Harperâs resistance. Harper rolls her eyes as Simone advances without waiting for Harper to agree. Harper leans against the opposite wall as the shelf, peeking around the corner to watch Simoneâs careful progress.
Simoneâs upper half disappears up the stairs, where she stalls for a beat. Harper sees Simoneâs head pop back down and she quickly motions for Harper to come her way. Harper is down the hallway and right behind Simone in a matter of seconds. She is ready to be rid of Peter.
Simone makes room for Harper to to see what sheâs seeing. As soon as Harperâs eyes adjust to the low lighting, her stomach twists in disgust. It looks like a communal feeding spot for vampires. Cages, only tall enough for someone to sit up in, line the room. Locked in the cages like animals are dozens of people. Some of them look as if they are dying as Harper and Simone process the scene they have plunged themselves into, but others are only halfway dead, thereâs still hope for them.
At the far end of the room, Peter sits in a lofty armchair with his fangs buried into the wrist of a young man. Simone has to hold Harper back from jumping the gun and charging Peter right then and there; they need a plan. Peter takes his time draining the young man. When heâs finished, one of the hunks from âHunk âOâ Maniaâ drags the barely breathing body back in to one of the cages.
âHarper, dear, you can come out now. No more hiding. For either of us.â Peterâs voice rings out loud and clear. He licks a stray drop of blood from the pad of his thumb, waiting for Harper to show herself.
âFuck it.â Harper sets her jaw and before Simone can do anything to stop her, she ascends the remaining steps of the staircase to face Peter. âItâs over, Peter.â Harper stares him down, machete in hand.
Peter smirks, relaxing back into his chair further. âOh, itâs not over yet. At least, not for me. Canât say the same for you, though⊠No one else came along with you? No Maisie, or Sam, or even Dean?â
Simone lets out a heavy sigh, before finally climbing the remaining steps. âSheâs not alone.â
Genuine surprise crosses Peterâs feature as he makes eye contact with her. âSimone? Itâs been quite some time, hasnât it?â
âToo long. Iâve been itching to see your head detached from your body. But Iâve had a difficult time finding you these last few years. You finally made a mistake by finding your kid, so here we are. Quite sloppy of you, Peter.â Simone stands beside Harper, tension coursing through her.
âWas it sloppy? Or did it serve a purpose? You were always the smartest of your siblings, Simone, you should know better. Iâve always had a plan,â Peter replies with a glint in his eyes. He stands abruptly, causing both girls to tighten their grip on their weapons. âAs much as I would love to keep chatting, Iâve got a daughter to corrupt and a plan to see through. But donât worry, I brought some friends to keep you company.â
A few vampires come out of a back room, some dress casually while others are workers from âHunk-O-Mania.â Another handful of vampires come up the stairs where Harper and Simone had entered, effectively surrounding the girls.
âTake care of these two for me, will you?â Peter says, strolling through his vampires and patting one on the shoulder as he makes his way to the stairs. âI would say work on your stealth next time, Harper, but there wonât be a next time.â He gives them a lazy wave as he descends the steps.
Harperâs hand tightens around her machete, her free hand tightening into a fist. âWeâre completely fucked,â Harper grounds out. The group of vampires stay in their positions, fangs bared and ready for the girls to try to make a move. âThis was a bad idea.â
âThis was your fucking idea!â Simone chides back. She then grabs Harperâs shoulder and nods to the large window on their right. âWe have a chance of being slightly less fucked if we donât stick around.â Only two vampires stand in the way of their exit route.
âThat fall is going to suck,â Harper mumbles, eyes scanning the room.
The girls make eye contact for a split second before sprinting toward the window. Simone barrels into the one of the right, shoving him out of the way, while Harper ducks, avoiding being grabbed by the one on the left, only tripping up slightly. Simone covers her head as she dives out the window, landing on the ground with a graceful roll. Harper jumps out after her; one of the vampireâs hands snag her pant leg, causing her to fall awkwardly. She lands on her side with a grunt of pain, scraping her arm on the concrete as she rolls.
Simone pulls Harper to her feet, tugging on her. âCâmon, youâre fine,â she says, pulling Harper down the alley until Harper gains her footing. Her arm burns, as they sprint away with vampires close behind. Somehow they would have to make it back to Harperâs truck without the parade of vampires chasing them, and if the stinging in her arm is any indication, they arenât off to the best start.
âWe canât go back to your truck. Theyâll be on us any second, we have to lose them,â Simone explains, checking their surroundings.
âExactly, and my truck is closer,â Harper argues, taking a minute to see how bad her arm is; itâs bleeding but nothing that canât be fixed.
âYes, because you parked across the fucking street at a gas station! Theyâll be waiting for us.â Simone is exasperated. Taking charge again, she dashes across the street, heading back to where she had left her car before meeting up with Harper.
âIâm sorry,â Harper whispers mournfully in the direction of her truck before she sprints after Simone as fast as she can with a limp. They only get one street down when a vamp tackles Harper. She kicks him off and rolls to her feet, slashing her machete at him.
He jumps back and dodges Harperâs advance, only to meet Simoneâs blade. One quick whack and Simone is taking off again, not waiting to see the vampire and his head fall to the ground.
âThanks,â Harper mumbles, limping after Simone again. They run down several more streets, Harper beginning to run out of breath, when Simone finally turns down another alley. Barely lit up by a street lamp, is a small electric blue car. Harper recognizes it as 2002 Toyota Echo.
âYou have.. The Blueberry!?â Harper exclaimed, referring to the name of Burton  Gusterâs car in the TV show Psych. Simone smirks slightly, acknowledging the comment, but simply telling Harper to get in. They ease out of the alleyway, making sure they donât have any more oncoming vamps, then Simone shoots down the road towards the Safehouse.
Harper pulls out her phone, calling Sam the first chance she gets. It rings twice before he answers. âHey, Harp.â
âHey, so, um⊠I might have gotten myself into trouble,â Harper says sheepishly, glancing at Simone, who rolls her eyes.
Sam sighs. âCanât say Iâm surprised. What happened?â
âPeter found out, and heâs going after Maisie,â Harper confesses.
âAnd how did Peter find out?â Sam presses.
âI kind of, sort of, followed him into a shady warehouse where he was waiting to ambush me,â Harper let out a heavy breath, knowing that isnât going to make Sam any happier.
âWeâre two hours out, Dean says weâll be there in an hour,â Sam states.
âSamâŠâ Harper wants to apologize for not telling Sam beforehand what she was going into. To be fair, she didnât know tonight would be the night shit hit the fan with Peter.
âHarper, stop.â Sam doesnât let her get it out. âAt least youâre not dead,â he relents slightly.
âI guess thatâs one thing that didnât go Peterâs way,â Harper admits. She doesnât want to think about if she hadnât made it out and couldnât get to Maisie.
âDean wants to talk to you,â Sam warns before heâs cut off. Harper sucks in a breath, ready for more beratement by Dean.
âStatus on Maisie?â Dean asks tensely, and Harper lets herself breathe slightly. That wasnât as bad as she was expecting, but she is sure she hasnât made it through the worst of it.
âI- I donât know yet. Weâre getting close to the Safehouse, but-â Harper answers tentatively.
âBut what?â Dean cuts her off aggressively.
âBut Peter had almost an hour head start on us,â she confesses, squeezing her eyes shut against the possibilities of what could be happening to Maisie.
âWhat the hell were you thinking, Harper!? You just left her alone so you could go galivanting after Peter with your new gal pal when you suspected Peter was up to no good? You should have kept us in the loop!â The levee has broken and Dean isnât going to let Harper get off easy. Not that she is going easy on herself. Harper is silent, not knowing how to answer. She doesnât have any good excuses.
âSon of a bitch.â Dean grumbles, handing the phone back to Sam.
âJust⊠Call me when you get back to the Safehouse, okay?â Sam makes Harper promise before hanging up. Harper looks over to Simone, wondering how much of that she had heard.
âDonât look at me, Iâm just here for revenge, not emotional support,â Simone deadpanned. Sighing to herself, Harper looks out of the window to notice they were closing in on the safehouse. The dirt road seems to stretch on for miles as anxiety courses through her.
As soon as Simone gets close enough to the house, Harper opens the door and jumps out. She runs to the front door, not needing to bother with her key because the door is already ajar. The sound of Neptune and Gandalf barking is muffled by the closed door of the infirmary. She rushes to let them out, Gandalf darting up the stairs towards Maisieâs room as soon as Harper opens the door.
She spots the back door open as well and she runs up the stairs. âMaisie!â She yells desperately, bursting into Maisieâs room and fumbling for the light. Her breath catches in her throat and tears start to well in her eyes. Maisie is nowhere to be seen.
Harperâs heart starts to race as her breathing grows more shallow. âMaisie, sheâsâ she's gone, fuck,â she sputters, her voice shaking. Her gaze falls to Simone beside her; in a small, desperate voice, she asks, âWhat do I do?â
Simoneâs face softens, putting her hand on Harperâs shoulder. âTake a deep breath, weâll find her, okay?â
Harperâs eyes sting with unshed tears. Running her fingers through her hair, she looks around the empty house, searching for any kind of clue. Simone sees the panic in her eyes and knows she will have to talk her through this.
âNow that he has Maisie, and he thinks youâre out of the way, is there anyone else he might go after?â Simone asks calmly. Harper wills herself to calm her breathing and think.
âPiper,â she breaths, pulling out her phone and finding Piperâs number with shaky hands. She only gets voicemail but she immediately hangs up and calls again. It rings again and again. Harper holds her breath, afraid she wonât get through and what that will mean. At the last minute, the line picks up.
âHarper, itâs four in the morning, if someone isnât dying, Iâm going to kill you,â Piper croaks out. Harper huffs out a breath of slight relief but her stomach is still in knots.
âDonât jinx it, Piper. Peter has Maisie. I was right about him, and I wish I could have been wrong this one fucking time,â Harper grits out.
âShit, Harper. What can I do? I donât know how I can help, but whatever you need youâve got me,â Piper reassures, her voice still tired but determined.
âNo, itâs okay, Iâm going to fix this. I just needed to make sure youâre okay. Iâm going to send someone over to make sure it stays that way,â Harper replies, trying to reassure her.
âCas?â Piper asks about their friend they usually assign as Piperâs guardian angel.
âNo, Iâm going to have to call someone closer. Someone who probably doesnât want to hear from me.â Harper clenches her jaw, knowing who she needs to call.
Harper hangs up the phone and searches through her contact for the number she needs to call next. Her thumb hovers over the name; itâs been so long she doesnât even know if heâll pick up. But she has to try for Piperâs sake. As the line rings, she takes a deep breath.
âHello?â The manâs voice is slightly groggy. Harper finds herself at a loss for words momentarily. She hadnât expected her heart to skip a beat. Old feelings die hard, she guesses. âHarper, is that you?â The voice sounds more stern this time.
âAre you drunk calling me?â Danny asks. Harper huffs put a short laugh but no one is amused.
âNo. I donât have time to explain but I need a favor. It's really important,â Harper says. Now itâs Dannyâs turn to laugh humorlessly.
âOh, so now you have time to call me, when you need something. Itâs been over a year, Harper,â Danny returns harshly. Harper sighs, she knows it sucks but she couldnât think of anyone else sheâd trust with Piper.
âI know, Danny, I know you donât owe me anything but i wouldnât call if I had another choice. Itâs life or death,â Harper is pleading now.
âWhat? None of your other backups picked up?â Danny scoffs. Even though he has every right to be angry with her, Harper is almost starting to get impatient. What doesnât he understand about life or death?
âActually, you were the first person I thought of. Please, Danny, Iâm calling because I trust you with this. Iâll make it up to you when I get back and everyoneâs safe. Iâll make up for everything.â Danny is silent for a moment, hearing the desperation in Harperâs voice breaks through his anger. He couldâve sworn she was holding back tears.
âWhat do you need?â Danny concedes. Harperâs eyes squeeze shut in relief.
âMy friend Piper Evans. I need you to keep her safe. Iâll text you the address,â Harper explains.
âOkay.â Harper almost hangs up, but she gets the urge to say one last thing.
âThank you, Danny. And I- I am sorry,â Harper doesnât know how to convey everything she means with the simple statement, but itâll have to do.
âYeah, well, just make it back in one piece so you can make it up to me.â Harper manages a small smile; she can almost hear the old Danny, the one she knew before everything got so complicated. He hangs up before she can promise anything.
Simone raises an eyebrow. âWell, he gave you a hard time, didnât he?â Harper lets out a sigh, but doesnât respond.
âNow, is there anyone else Peter might go after?â
Harper stays silent for another beat, letting her thoughts ramble off anyone important in their lives until thereâs only one possibility left. âMomma Q, but sheâs in CaliâŠâ
âMomma Q? As in your foster mom? Sheâs  is still alive!?â
âOne of them, yeah?â
Simone rolls her eyes, heading for the door. âYou dumbass, he wants revenge.â

Harper waits as the line rings. Once. Twice. Three times.
âWho is this?â Claireâs suspicious voice is surprisingly stern.
âItâs Harper, you have to come watch our dogs for us so I can go meet my stupid cow-people family.â Harper dives right in, wasting no time on pleasantries.
âUm, hello to you too, and I donât have to do anything,â Claire replies, her suspicion turned to annoyance.
âYes you do, we saved your life, you owe us,â Harper challenges. Claire huffs and Harper can practically hear Claire rolling her eyes.
âHarper forgot to add a âpleaseâ in there, babe. You donât owe us anything, Harper owes you a leather jacket,â Maisie walks into Harperâs room just in time to jump in and save the day.
âOh, hi Maisie! Well, I uh- I guess I can spare a couple days, I donât have any hunts on my radar.â Itâs Harperâs turn to roll her eyes, hard. As soon as Maisie asks, Claire is nothing but sweet and helpful.
âOh, youâre the best! Hey, howâre those new pickup lines I showed you working out?â Maisie asks, wiggling her eyebrows to Harperâs annoyance. Claire lets out an embarrassed giggle, but before she can answer, Harper takes back the conversation.
âOkay, I think weâre good here, weâll see you tomorrow at six. Bye.â Harper hangs up the phone and tosses it at Maisie who easily blocks it. âDo your lesbian pep-talking on your own minutes. And my leather jackets arenât for charity cases.â
âYou love lesbian pep talks, youâre just grumpy because Iâm making you drive to Texas. You havenât even met your family yet, Harper, at least give them a chance before you call them âdumb cow-people,ââ Maisie scolds Harper with her disapproving mom look.
âBut I donât want to meet them,â Harper complains, trying to reach for her phone without getting off her bed. Maisie sticks out her foot and gives Harperâs phone a soft kick, sending it under Harperâs bed and out of her reach. Harper sits up, glaring at Maisie; to which Maisie replies with an innocent shrug.
âLook, Harp, we donât always want family, but theyâre what we got. We need them. And the more the merrier! Just think of the nine-nine-â Harper groans loudly as soon as Maisie tries to start on another Brooklyn Nine-Nine rant.
âHey, you love that show as much as I do, donât give me that.â Maisie crosses her arms.
âBut I donât introduce it into my day-to-day conversation every chance I get!â Harper shoots back.
âWhatever.â Maisie disappears from the room, and Harper wonders if that actually pissed her sister off. But moments later, Maisie reappears with a large shoe-box in hand. âYouâre wearing these tomorrow,â Maisie states, dropping the box on Harperâs bed and leaving Harper to find out what they are.
Slowly opening the box, almost in fear, Harper sucks in a sharp breath when she sees whatâs inside. Harper throws the box from the bed immediately.
âI am NOT wearing cowboy boots, Maisie!â The only reply Harper gets is Maisieâs laughter floating down the hall.
After Claire arrives at the Safehouse, it takes them an hour of Harper stalling before the group finally leaves. Claire spends her time exploring the house and the surrounding woods. She admires Maisieâs gorgeous classic mustang, which does no favors for her crush on Maisie.
The next three days pass slow and uneventful, with only Gandalf and Neptune to keep her company. She loved them, of course; they were the only boys Claire would ever like. However, when it came to human interaction, Claire let the characters of Brooklyn Nine-Nine keep her company. It was Maisieâs favorite show, after all.
On her last day, she decided she didnât want to wait for Harper to be picky about which leather jacket she kept. Harper was the one who cut up one of her favorite jackets, so this was only fair. Taking the plunge into Harperâs room, Claire is cautious, half suspecting Harper to have booby traps.
She looks around at all the posters and stacks of books; she actually admires Harperâs taste. When she gets to her closet, sheâs dumbfounded by the amount of black Harper owns.
âSheâs worse than me and Iâm practically the goth poster child,â Claire mumbles to herself in bemusement.
She takes her time, going through all the leather jackets and trying them on. Finally, pushed to the back of the closet, Claire pulls out the last one. As soon as she puts it on she never wants to take it off.
It fits her to a T, like a home she could take with her. She can tell it is a lot older than most of them, but to Claire, it looks like it has history. She feels invincible. Just how a leather jacket should feel. Â Â
Later that night, everyone returns to the Safehouse and finds Claire asleep on the couch in Harperâs old leather jacket. Gandalf is curled up by her feet, and Neptune is on the floor in front of the couch, where Claireâs hand hangs off the edge and rests on his head.
The group all gathers around to see the rare sight of a peaceful Claire. She even has a slight smile pulling on the corner of her lips. Maisie pulls out her phone and snaps a picture before the moment passes.
âAwe, sheâs so cute, she looks like she belongs,â Maisie sighs softly.
âSend me that picture,â Dean says quietly over Maisieâs shoulder.
âThatâs my fucking jacket.â Harper purses her lips, not affected by the scene like everyone else. Harper moves to wake Claire, and everyone simultaneously whisper-yells at her to stop.
But itâs too late. Claire starts to stir. Her eyes shoot open and she almost falls off of the couch and onto Neptune.
âShit. Creepy much? How long have you all been there watching me sleep?â Claire sputters groggily. Everyone mutters a lame excuse or apology, making Claire roll her eyes.
âWell, shows over.â Claire yawns and tries to ignore them, reaching down to scratch behind Neptuneâs ears; he practically smiles at her. Everyone disperses to the kitchen or bathroom after the long drive, except Maisie who is still taking pictures and Harper who watches Claire with her dog.
âNice jacket,â Harper comments, crossing her arms and trying to sound nonchalant. Seeing someone wear that jacket again brought up feelings Harper forgot she had.
âUm, yeah, I like it⊠it took me years to find it because you have so many. Seriously, your closet makes you look like a biker gang serial killer.â Claire tries to be snarky, but they could tell she was hoping Harper isnât angry.
âYeah, well youâre just my type, girl gang,â Harper sasses back with eyebrow raised, daring her to try again. Claire laughs nervously and puts her hands up in defeat. Harper looks Claire up and down, appraising her.
âThat was the first leather jacket I ever got. My mom gave it to me before she died,â Harper admits.
âHarper wore it day and night for weeks. Couldnât get her to take if off, no matter what our moms tried.â Maisie smiles fondly, remembering their late mother Laelynn, and all the little things she did just to make them happy. Despite all the hard times life had thrown at them, she made them happy a lot of the time.
âIâm sorry, I didnât know. Here, Iâll give it back-â Claire rambles, starting to take it off, but Harper stops her.
âNo, itâs okay. It looks good on you.â
Maisie and Claire both blink at Harper in surprise. Â âA-are you sure?â Claire asks, carefully pulling the jacket back onto her shoulders.
âIâm sure. Just take care of it, kid. A leather jacket is a girlâs best friend.â Â
A/N: shout out to tori who beta reads our fics and makes sure we stay on track, big thanks to her, we love her a lot :) we promised weâd write her into the series, so here she is lol also iâm sorry for the angst :/ -mara

Harper stares off into the distance, eyeing the tree line outside of her bedroom window. She contemplates which black T-shirts she wants to pack, when a shimmer of movement catches her eye. Stepping closer to her window to get a better look, Harper realizes what she saw.
She slips from her room and runs down the stairs, passing Dean in the kitchen.
âWhy are you running?â Dean asks, squinting at her over his coffee cup.
âI- uh⊠left something in my trunk,â Harper says over her shoulder, dashing out of the back door before he can question her further. Dean looks up, eyebrows raised as Harper pops her head back around the corner. âDoes my hair look okay?â Dean furrows his brows, giving her a face shrug, not sure what she wants from him.
âUgh nevermind.â Harper rolls her eyes and disappears back out the door. Finally reaching the tree line, she slows to a walk, trying to collect the cool she only ever pretends she has.
âHey,â she says lamely, catching a glimpse of Simone leaning against one of the tree trunks.
âYou are really slow. How have you survived this long as a hunter?â Simone questions without missing a beat.
âWell, hey! I⊠uh, thatâs a good question, actually.â Harper tries to be offended but realizes she canât even defend herself on that one. Simone is unfazed by Harperâs lack of composure, moving on to the reason she revealed herself.
âSo, youâre going on a trip.â Simone states, no question in her tone.
âYep⊠And?â Harper prompts, waiting for the punchline.
âLeaving anyone to watch Peter?â Simone asks casually, as if she already knows the answer. Which she does. Simone knows everything.
âWell⊠I figured you were gonna do that anyway, so why hire private security when I have you?â Harper shrugs, trying to play Simoneâs game. âThe question is, are you gonna share any info this time or keep playing cat and mouse?â
âItâs not like I can send you text updates. I donât have your number,â Simone states, examining her fingernails.
âDo you.. want my number?â Harper wonders as much to herself as to Simone.
âDo you want me to have your number?â Simone still doesnât look up, paying more attention to each of her perfectly manicured nails than to Harper. Harper looks to the sky, sighing in exasperation. Once Harper looks back to her, Simone finally looking at Harper with her hand extended out.
Harper slowly reaches her hand out, a look of confusion on her face as she slides her hand onto Simoneâs. Simone quickly smacks her hand away, pursing her lips.
âYour phone,â Simone states, trying to keep from rolling her eyes. Harper hurriedly grabs her phone from her pocket, handing it to Simone without making eye contact. After a beat, Simone hands Harperâs phone back. âDonât send me memes.â
âThatâs fair. What about dog pics?â Harper almost canât believe she actually asked that, the anxiety over her complete uncoolness around Simone growing in the ensuing silence. After the longest minute of Harperâs life, Simone breaks the silence.
âYeah, I guess thatâs okay. You can send me one every time you miss me.â The corner of Simoneâs lip turns up in the slightest smirk.
âOh, you think Iâm gonna miss you, huh?â Harper shoots back.
âEveryone does,â Simone returns before disappearing back into the trees.
âReally, youâre doing the whole dramatic backing into the shadows? Well, itâs not that dramatic in the middle of the day!â Harper calls after her. She immediately face-palms at the whole conversation, or more specifically her side of the conversation.
She turns back to the house, trying to outrun her embarrassment, only to be met with Dean as soon as she opens the door. Dean wears a look of concern and confusion. âUm, not that I was watching or anything⊠But why were you yelling at the trees?â
Harper hesitates. Explaining the exchange with Simone would sound odd. Her vampire ally wanted her number so she could send updates on Harperâs foster sisterâs vampire dad. âI-- Itâs a long story,â Harper sputters out.
Dean raises an eyebrow. âWhat are you onâŠ? And can I have some?â Harper rolls her eyes, ignoring his response and heading back upstairs to finish packing for their trip to visit her extended family in Texas.
A Sixteen Hour Drive And A Decent Nightâs Sleep Later
Dust kicks up around Harperâs dark blue truck as it pulls into the dirt parking lot outside of the family-run rodeo outside of Abilene, Texas. Maisie kept recommending they listen to country music on the way from the motel, teasing Harper to try to get her to lighten up a bit. It didnât help, and neither did the cowboy boots. Maisie thought of the brilliant idea that everyone needed to dress for the occasion; sheâs very proud of herself for that.
Harper throws the truck into park, lingering inside the cab, while the Winchesterâs and Maisie hop out. She stares out the windshield, eyeing the small rodeo. Metal fences are everywhere, keeping livestock contained for the later events. A small building stands off to the side, Â multiple wooden picnic tables littering the ground nearby. A country band is setting up on a wooden stage with plenty of open space for dancing after the rodeo ends.
Knocking on the driverâs side window, Sam accidentally startles Harper. âSorry,â he mumbles as she pushes open the truck door. âYou ready for this?â
âUh, honestly? Not at all, but letâs get this over with.â Harper walks around him, feeling uncomfortable and awkward in her black cowboy boots. At least Maisie bought her black ones.
Maisie and Dean take the lead, walking hand in hand toward the small amount of people milling about the rodeo grounds. They arrived earlier than necessary to scope out and meet Harperâs family.
A woman walks up to them, dressed in ripped jeans, cowboy boots, and a t-shirt; her black hair is pulled into two braids, a baseball cap resting on her head. âHowdy. How can I help yâall?â
Harper glances to Maisie and mumbles, âWhat the hell did she say? I donât speak Texan.â Maisie elbows her, and the dark-haired woman gives her an unimpressed look.
âWeâre looking for the Lovitzâ,â Maisie replies sweetly, trying to make up for Harperâs attitude.
âWell, Iâm Tori Lovitz, I run the place,â the woman introduces herself, giving everyone a little nod in greeting.
âIâm Maisie, this is Dean,â she says, looking to Dean beside her. âThatâs Sam, and⊠Harper.â Tori simply nods, wondering what this odd group of out-of-towners could possibly need from her family.
Harper takes a deep breath. âI need to talk to Liam and Nora, if theyâre around?â
âSure,â Tori gestures for the group to follow her, walking toward the small building by the picnic tables and stage. âWhatâs this about?â
Harper hesitates, glancing to Maisie and Sam who both give her encouraging looks. Their positive expressions make her hate this even more; theyâre so glad she found some family, but Harper couldnât care less. She only wanted to make sure they werenât some monster that would come back to haunt her; interacting with her extended family is not something she wanted.
Harper sighs, begrudgingly answering. âIâm your cousin, Harper Dawson.â She didnât care to dance around the reason. Maisie gives her a slight look, wishing her sister wouldnât be so blunt about it.
Tori stops in her tracks, turning to look at Harper; her confused look slowly turns to realization. âShit, where have you been?â Harper simply shrugs, and Tori points to the building. âThey should be in there, but Iâll have to go grab my brother.â
The group carries on toward the door, Harper lagging behind a bit. She isnât sure if sheâs ready for this, but she couldnât back out now. Sam holds the door open for everyone, taking the opportunity to be beside his girlfriend inside.
The building is actually a small bar with stools and a few more picnic tables. An older couple sits at the bar with mostly empty plates and cold beers, chatting to each other. Their conversation comes to a halt as they look at the group.
Harper pushes herself forward, forcing herself to speak. âUh, hi. Weâre looking for Liam and Nora?â
The couple stands up from their stools; the man extends his hand to her. âIâm Liam, this is my wife, Nora,â he says, his voice deep and gruff. âWhat can we help you with?â He glances at the group, while Nora shakes Harperâs hand as well.
âUm⊠Well, I-- Iâm Harper⊠Dawson.â Harper swallows heavily; her throat almost feels like itâs closing in. She clenches her fists at her side, hoping itâll help fight off some of her anxiety. âMy mom was your sister,â she directs to Nora, who is wearing a shocked expression.
Her surprise fades after a quiet moment, and Nora pulls Harper into a tight hug. âGod, you look so much like your mother.â Liam joins the hug, overcome with joy, and Harper awkwardly accepts it, even though she hates it.
When they back away, Nora keeps her hands on Harperâs arms, holding her still to get a good look at her. âWhere have you been all this time?â
At this moment, another dark-haired girl walks in from the back room of the bar, confusion written heavily on her face. âWhatâs going on?â
âRonan! This is your cousin, Harper. Cooper and Lanaâs daughter,â Liam speaks up, an underlying joy clear in his tone. He turns to Harper then. âHarper, I donât believe youâve met the twins. I think they were born after⊠the incident.â
Harper nods to her uncle before giving her cousin an awkward wave across the bar. âNice to meet you.â
âIs she the one that went missing after Uncle Cooper and Auntie Lana died?â Ronan blatantly asks, as if making sure she knows what cousin her parents are referring to.
âRonan,â Nora says, her voice a warning.
âWhat? Just wanted to be sure,â she grumbles.
âYeah, thatâs me,â Harper affirms, not bothered in the slightest by the question.
âWhoâd you bring with you?â Ronan asks, nodding toward the rest of the group.
âOh,â Harper glances back, realizing she forgot to introduce them earlier. âThis is my boyfriend, Sam, and his brother, Dean. And then this,â she grabs Maisieâs arm, pulling her sister to stand beside her. âThis is my foster sister, Maisie. She helped me find you.â
Nora smiles genuinely to Maisie. âThank you.â
She returns the smile and nods. âI recently found my dad, and I thought Harper should find her family, too.â
Tori comes in then, with a man who Harper assumes is Ronanâs twin brother. He walks up to Harper, holding out his hand which she shakes as he introduces himself. âIâm Killian,â he smiles. âNice to finally meet you, Cousin Harper. Tori caught me up on the way here.â
Harper nods. âNice to meet you.â
Killian takes a seat in one of the stools, leaning against the bar; Ronan takes a seat beside him. Sam and Dean take a seat on the table tops of one of the picnic tables, and everyone else decides to stay standing. Harper didnât plan on having this conversation taking too long, not if she could help it.
âSo, what happened? Where have you been? We knew your parents passed away, but the police didnât have a clue where you couldâve been.â Nora asks as her expression darkens. Harper had rehearsed her little speech on the way here, but now that she was standing in front of the whole family, her words are forgotten, thanks to her nerves.
âUm, well⊠I was saved by a couple, and they kind of adopted me and Maisie. I grew up with them in California⊠Went to Stanford. Oh, which is where I met Sam, my boyfriend. Although we didnât get together till last year.â Harper catches herself rambling, and takes a deep breath to collect her thoughts.
Maisie glances at her phone, seeing a text from Piper that she and Cas had arrived. âIâll be right back, okay? Piper and Cas just got here.â Harper nods, watching Maisie and Dean both walk out of the bar. Sam stands up then, placing his hand on the small of Harperâs back.
âIâd love to stick around, but I need to make sure everything is set up for tonight. It was nice seeing you, Harper.â Tori smiles at her cousin before heading toward the door.
âUh, yeah, same.â Harper replies awkwardly. âUm, sorry for letting you all think I was dead or something for so long.â
Liam shakes his head. âNot your fault, darling.â
After Piper and Cas arrived, more people did as well for the local rodeo taking place tonight. Harper exchanges contact information with her family, promising them they would have a proper catch-up session soon, before she finally walks out of the small bar. Maisie chats excitedly about watching all the different events with the group, but Harper stares off, watching everything around her, not hearing a word.
Everyone starts to walk toward the makeshift arena, startling Harper out of her haze. âHey, Sam?â Harper calls; he immediately turns to her, smiling and happy. She wish she felt the same way, but after meeting her family, she feels overwhelmed and numb to the world. âCan we just⊠go on a walk?â
Sam nods, expression growing more serious at her tone. âYeah, of course.â
He is beside her in a single stride, and matches her pace as they walk toward the parking lot. A silence settles between them, but the sounds of the rodeo behind them keep the air lively and excitable. As they come to the dirt parking lot, Sam notices the sheer amount of trucks that have taken over.
âSee, you fit in just fine,â Sam says jokingly, earning a loud groan from Harper.
âI donât want to fit in. I didnât even want to come.â Harper continues to walk, trying to flee from this scene for a while.
Sam takes her extended silence as an invitation to ask questions. âWhy didnât you want to come?â
She lets out a sigh. âOkay, this is going to sound terrible, but I really donât care about these people.â
Sam looks a little surprised, because Harper is one of those people who says she doesnât care, but deep down, probably cares too much. âReally?â He sounds unconvinced.
âYeah, I just wanted to make sure they werenât monsters that would come to bite me in the ass, but Maisie insisted. And you insisted. As if finding my extended family was going to change my life or something, so I did it. I came here and met them. And now I want to go home.â Harper kicks at the dirt, avoiding eye contact with an amused Sam. At least, sheâs honest with him.
A silence falls between them again, as they circle the outskirts of the parking lot. âCan I ask why you donât care?â
Harper shrugs, pondering the question for a moment. âWell, I already have all the family I need. I have Maisie and Piper. I have my dog. And⊠I have you,â she hesitantly adds the last bit before looking over to Sam.
He smiles, wrapping his arm around her shoulder and pulling her close to drop a kiss on her head. âYouâre my family, too.â Harper beams at that. She stops in her tracks, wanting to give him a quick kiss, when her phone buzzes, drawing her attention away from the situation.
Itâs a text from Simone, about Maisieâs dad. Nothing of interest to report on her end. The sight of the text causes guilt to course through Harper; she still hasnât told Sam.
âShit,â Harper mumbles to herself, as she paces back a few steps.
âWhatâs up?â The concern in Samâs voice makes her feel worse.
âI-- I have to tell you something⊠UmâŠâ Harper looks away from him, clenching and unclenching her fist repeatedly. âDonât be mad, but, uh⊠Iâve kind of been keeping something from you.â With narrowed eyes, Sam opens his mouth to speak, but Harper quickly cuts him off. âAnd I know I-- I promised to not do that, but⊠okay, Iâm just going to say it.â She takes a deep breath, fists clenched by her side, and decides to look at Sam head on for this admission. She immediately regrets it, because she can tell heâs already a little angry with her.
âIâve been spying on⊠Maisieâs dad. With a friend.â
Sam lets out an exasperated sigh, running his hands through his hair. âHarperâŠâ She hates the disappointment in his tone. âHow long?â
âI donât know⊠Started back when Claire showed up.â
He lets out another sigh. âHarper, itâs been over a week since that.â
âYeah, well, no matter when I told you, I knew you were going to be upset about it,â she defends herself slightly, which is probably one of her worst ideas as of recent.
Sam fumes. âSo, you waited? Until what? You were reminded by our family conversation that you constantly lie to your family?â
Shock takes over Harperâs expression, and she looks to Sam, the shock slowly fading into hurt. âNo,â her voice sounds small. She feels like that comment was deserved, though. After the last time she kept a secret about Maisieâs dad. His words were enough to drain all of the fight out of her, especially after meeting her family.
âSo, why tell me now?â He demands.
âI felt bad about keeping it from you,â she admits quietly. Samâs anger settles a little at those words.
âWho else knows?â Thereâs still an edge to his voice.
âYou and Dean.â
âWhy the hell did Dean know before me?â His anger is starting to boil again.
âBecause he caught me sneaking back into my house when he came over for Claire,â This one small bit of justification gives Harper back some semblance of fight, and she stares him down a little bit.
âHas he been helping you with this?â
âNo,â she says. âSimone has.â
âWho the hell is that?â
Harper grimaces at the question; he wonât like the answer. âSheâs been looking into Peter, too, and weâre allies. Sheâs, um⊠well, sheâs a vampire.â
Sam runs his hands through his hair again, anger coursing through him. âAre you fucking kidding me? Please tell me you, at least, see the irony of that.â Harper doesnât respond, deciding silence is best here.
After what feels like forever, Harper speaks up. âIâm going to let you process this, and you come find me when youâre less mad.â She walks off toward the bar, leaving Sam to himself which, she assumes, will also make him angry, but she needs a break, too.
Harper pushes the door open, finding a few people milling about and her cousin, Ronan, behind the bar. She plops down onto one of the stools near Ronan, ordering a beer.
âThis oneâs on me,â Ronan says, placing the cold beer in front of Harper.
She smiles gratefully. âHonestly, the highlight of my night.â
Ronan smirks. âWhat, didnât have the time of your life meeting my family?â Harper sips at her drink, clearly amused.
âCanât say I did.â
âYeah, I wouldnât be overjoyed at meeting them, either.â Someone at the other end of the bar flags Ronan down, which Harper is grateful for, as she didnât know how to respond to that. Ronan comes back after a minute, resting her arms on the bar by Harper. âSo,â she starts. âLove the all black, by the way.â
Harper narrows her eyes a bit, trying to gauge her tone. âThanksâŠâ
âI mean it. I wouldnât be dressed like this,â Ronan gestures down to her outfit, cutoff jean shorts and a white tank top. âIf I wasnât working in this stuffy bar all night.â
âOh⊠well, your outfit isnât the worst Iâve seen.â
Ronan looks amused. âAn odd compliment, but Iâll take it. Whatâs the worst youâve seen then?â
âI live in Vegas, I see the worst a lot. Itâs hard to pick just one.â
Ronan lets out a little laugh, as Harper takes a long swig from her beer. âAll right, what about the worst one here, tonight?â
âIâm pretty sure I saw a guy earlier with a partially shaved head, and the hair that wasnât shaved off was pulled into a ponytail. I donât even know what he was wearing, because I was so distracted by his head.â
âOh my god,â Ronan breathes out, laughter in her tone. âHeâs been here a few times. Still donât know his name.â She starts telling stories about some of the weird people sheâs met while working at the bar, and Harper happily listens, laughing and drinking. Itâs a nice distraction from the chaos that this night has been.
The bar starts to fill with more people as the rodeo events come to a close. The country band and line dancing keep the night alive, although. Harper eventually says goodbye to her cousin, walking out of the small bar to watch drunk people dance and find her friends. Maisie and Piper are trying to learn the line dance, while Sam, Dean, and Cas stand off to the side, chatting and watching in amusement.
Harper stands back, letting the scene unfold in front of her. The loud music, the stomping boots. The laughter and the animated conversations. Her family having a good time with each other. This may not be her ideal Saturday night, but she wants to remember this moment, at this little rodeo in the middle of Texas. They are all together, having fun for the most part. Although, Sam still looks a little on the angry side, when Harper decides to stroll over to the group.
âIâm sorry,â Harper says just loud enough for him to hear.
Sam places a hand on her back, leaning over slightly and talking quietly so Dean and Cas wouldnât hear. âI know⊠Weâll talk about it later, okay?â Harper nods. âI love you, Harp.â
