One of my favorite characters of all time, 2D! With the non-binary announcement recently I’ve been thinking about my own relationship with my gender identity and how that’s related to them over the years. The year I started to question if I was non-binary was 2018, the same year I started going to an extremely trans rock camp where my bass teacher taught us how to play feel good inc. It was my first real exposure to the band and I was hooked, I went head first into the story, the songs, the art, everything. I was a very confused person then, constantly going between a million identities and hoping that one of them would magically fit me. Now when I listen to The Now Now it takes me back to that, i think the story of that album is about not knowing yourself or why you are feeling the things you are, and how scary that feels. I could say more on that but this is already a pretty long caption lol. This piece is in many ways trying to represent that idea though, the confusion and fear that comes with trying to know yourself, how change never feels right in the moment, and, most importantly, how pretty 2D is when he’s upset lol. I included a lot of flowers in this, namely daffodils (symbolizing rebirth and new beginnings), hawthorn (hope), larkspur (levity, better days ahead), and hellebore (stress and anxiety, but also a symbol of endurance), as well as a Yellow Warbler which represent joy and gratitude but also new beginnings. I tried to pick everything to represent that no matter how dark it may feel, it will get better. I spent over 10 hours on this drawing, which is the longest I’ve ever worked on any drawing ever lol, I really wanted to make it mean something though, I often feel like what I draw doesn’t hold meaning for anyone outside of myself, so I worked hard to, even if it didn’t resonate with anyone else, had a meaning hard coded in that couldn’t be denied. I don’t know if that’s crazy or not but it is what I did. Anyway I am really proud of this piece, I hope y’all like it too <3
