Pol-e Tabiat in Theran is definetly one of my favourite places in the city! It's chief architect was gifted Leila Araghian who was only in her twenties when she won the design competition. When I am there, I think about all the young, hungry, creative, strong and inspiring Iranians, following in their dreams in a country ruled by outdated social conventions and corruption as hard and frustrating as that can be. Their traces are visible all over the city, some as big as Tehrans largest, award-winning pedestrian overpass, some as small as a 30m2 gallery with 20 pieces of stunning artwork hidden in one of the city's countless side streets. Iran is one of the most diverse countries in the world. Beautiful mountains with ski tracks, one of the driest desserts in the world, untouched jungle-like forrests, mega-cities, villages of rice-farmes and...stunning beaches. However, due to religious rules the wearing of swimsuits is prohibited (for men and women) and although you technically you could go for a swim in your clothes, guards will caution you as soon as your clothes stick too much to your body. You see, you can't really enjoy a nice day at the sea, which is a shame. The diversity and beauty of Iran would make it and ideal vacation destination if the strict governmental, religious-based rules wouldn't often spoil the experience. In the end they are spurning on huge amounts of money, especially as they are now aiming for less dependence on the oil industry. The first time in my life I saw rice being grown. The evening of that day we were having a cup of tea at the farm next to our hotels and were deciding where to go to have dinner. There was not much around and we ended up being invited by the farmer and his wife, who turned out to be an amazing cook. The rice we enjoyed that night was coming from the fields right next to us, it was fabulous! Better than any restaurant we could have went to. In Iran ,I wear a headscarf, I cover my arms, my shoulders and my legs, I don't eat pork or drink alcohol - all these things are clearly related to Muslim faith (and in one case to my vegetarianism :D) and still my devotion to religion is not what is telling me to do these things. There are laws that force me and all the other people of Iran to act this way. Of course, officially these laws were made in respect to religion and Allah but funnily enough they mostly lead to people loosing their respect for both. Faith can never be force - and when religion is forced upon people, it is robbed of it's spirituality and values and becomes solemnly an empty husk only used to cover the striving for power and control. Traveling in Iran has one major downside: The Hotels. Although you could see it in a way that if you can sleep there, you can sleep everywhere, you feel a little bit like you are trapped in an episode of Iranian Horror story: Hotel. My way to cope here was to agree with having this view and the price for that is a mouldy bathroom and beds coverd with plastic cloths. Teheran has that really weird system, that every part of the city is dedicated to a special kind of shop like clothes, furniture, antiques etc. So depending where you live it takes you quite a while to go to the shop you need to go. The best alternative: The bazar. There you can find absolutely EVERYTHING. Also, it is the place where in every city you really get that oriental spirit of the Arabian Nights ;) Everywhere there are people bargaining, shouting and advertising their products. You have the chance to meet the locals who will be very interested in your origin and what the hell you are (voluntarily) doing in Iran :D I just love to enjoy the atmosphere and of course a good kabab! #iran #irantravel #travel #adventure #bazar #food #shopping #photgraphy #arabiannights #orient

Iran's cities are loud. They are dirty. They are crowded. They lack oxygen. And they have the most beautiful gardens. Iranian people love gardens. As they live in a desert country, water and greenery is nothing that normally can be found easily. Also, going out on the street is not exactly fun in general. It is hot, you can't breathe and you live in the constant fear of being run over by one of the crazy drivers that roam the city and have no concept of traffic regulation whatsoever. You are never fully at peace when you are outside, there is that anxious part of your mind that constantly feels watched or is scared of "misbehaving". The gardens are different. They are quite literally oases, where the heat is more bearable, where you are out of reach of the cars and the cooling shadows of the trees, the colourful flowers and the atmosphere of relaxation gives you a feeling of peace and security that you usually do not have when you leave your house. You finally can take a deep breath again. You see old men playing chess, young boys playing football, ladies who chat on benches and students that sit in the gras and study. You never are as close of feeling completely free and comfortable as when you have a chai next to a water fountain und orange trees. You feel normal, free and relaxed in a country you would not normally associate this adjectives with. Another picture taken out of the window of a car. For me, the best way to explore Iran is by car. You will find the best views and will make the most surprising experiences if you choose one of the lonely roads in the desert in the south or follow the trails through the mountains in the North.
