âMany people seem to think it foolish, even superstitious, to believe that the world could still change for the better. And it is true that in winter it is sometimes so bitingly cold that one is tempted to say, âWhat do I care if there is a summer; its warmth is no help to me now.â Yes, evil often seems to surpass good. But then, in spite of us, and without our permission, there comes at last an end to the bitter frosts. One morning the wind turns, and there is a thaw. And so I must still have hope.â
â Vincent Van Gogh
There is one patch of sunlight that falls in my apartment and every time I see it I think âa cat would look so good there.â

listen. aging into your thirties rocks. yes your joints get a little creaky. yes you canât sleep in a pretzel on the floor anymore after a concert or a convention. and you lose some friends. but the thing is that you sort out who your real friends are and you sort out who you really are. and you get to see your friends settling into careers they like, and adopt new dogs and cats, and you find a job you can stand, and get really good at arts and crafts, and maybe that book you loved as a kid gets a movie deal and it doesnât suck, and you learn to like new food and bake your own bread, and you realize that the great portfolio of self harm scars you all used to curate are going white with age and not updated, and half your friends are a different gender now and so much happier and maybe you are too, and you know who you are, and that itâs a journey and not a revelation. itâs a direction youâre headed, and youâre enjoying the trip.
reaching your 30âČs rocks. and iâm hearing good things about what comes next, too.

you guys. if you haven't been following the mar a lago fbi raid saga this week you have really been missing out. it came out monday night that the fbi had spent the day collecting boxes of documents from mar a lago and maga world lost it. "this is war", hard right demands to abolish the fbi, insane posturing, every single pundit on the record saying "if this search was for anything short of the nuclear codes, this is going to massively backfire on the biden administration" (foreshadowing!). eventually report comes out that people close to trump are quietly telling the rest of the gop to dial it back just a hair, because things might get worse before they get better. most crucially is that the susan collinses of the world are demanding accountability from the justice department, demanding that they explain why this raid was warranted. (notably, trump himself has the warrant describing exactly what the fbi was there to collect, and is free to share that with the world at any point - the judge/doj is typically barred from making that public at any point, so by hounding the wrong figures for the warrant they're thinking they can control the narrative.)
not so. today, attorney general merrick garland makes a statement saying you know what? you guys are so right. there's actually significant public interest in making the details of this warrant - why a former president was raided by the fbi - public knowledge. so with your blessing, mr trump, i am asking the judge who signed the warrant (he and his synagogue have been getting death threats already btw, rot in hell forever you maga fuckwits) to unseal the warrant. trump, you have until 3pm friday to publicly object to this action. love and light, merrick
and then wapo reported tonight that the warrant was for, among other things, nuclear documents. yeehaw
chekovâs cat: if you see a cat, it will probably be relevant later.
schroedingerâs gun: thereâs no way to know if a gun is loaded or not until you physically inspect and check it yourself, so itâs safest to assume all guns are loaded.
Accurate. All guns are dangerous, and cats are ALWAYS important.

Beep boop! I look for accidental haiku posts. Sometimes I mess up.
I thought about how to answer this question for a while, anon. I thought about scratch-resistant glasses, and how their coating was first developed by NASA to protect astronaut helmet visors. I thought about ear thermometers, and how NASAâs Jet Propulsion lab helped adapt the same infrared technology they use to gauge the heat of stars to tell you if your child had a fever. I thought about the 200 communication satellites orbiting the Earth, and how NASA was responsible for the first. I thought about smoke detectors, water filters, LED lights, freeze dried food, solar energy, invisaline braces, safety grooves on the curbs of the highway, memory foam, baby food, the dustbusterâŠ
Space travel, facing unique challenges, comes up with unique solutions. It is a shining example of innovation, of creative problem-solving, and how the ripple effects of such endeavors can benefit society as a whole.
But for me, this utilitarian argument isnât truly satisfying. If space travel did nothing but took us into space, I would still consider it important, vital, worth doing. And it took a while for me to understand why.
I think my answer, the romantic answer, is âwanderlust.â Because 60,000 years ago, a small population of Homo sapiens crossed the Bab-el-Mandeb Strait from Africa into the Arabian Peninsula. Only 10,000 years later, Homo sapiens had reached Southeast Asia and Australia, mostly by island-hopping and hugging coastlines. 15,000 years ago, they braved massive ice shelves to travel across the Asian-Americas land bridge and down into Mesoamerica. Each generation moved a little further into the unknownâthe profoundly unknown, untouched by any sort of humanityâand stayed. And the next generation moved a little further than that. Gene maps show that people went back as well as moving forward; that there was sailing and trade much earlier than anyone would ever have thought.
There is something in humanity that looks at a horizon and wants.
And thenâwell, then we looked up and saw the sky, we looked down and saw the depths of the ocean. Places no human being had ever been, never seen, never really known. But we had no way of going, and so we wrote stories about what was there, because imagination isnât constrained by physics. (Donât tell me that Icarus and Captain Nemo arenât the same person; they typify the same human desire, to reach for something just beyond reach.) I donât know whether the stories inspired the real-life inventors, or they were simply symptomatic of the same desireâIâm not sure it matters. Because we developed sonar and submarines and scuba diving, and descended to the deepest points of the ocean; we took to the sky on wings of steel.
And then we realized that there was a place beyond sky, that we still hadnât quite reached the stars. So we built rockets and rovers, and we went. We wandered the surface of the moon, and sent satellites to be out eyes in the very distant corners of space. We could not see beyond our own solar system, and so we built better eyesâto see in every spectra, undreamed-of distances. Through them, we gazed at planets and nebulae and supernovae, we saw the universe without ever leaving our own tiny blue-and-green marble.
We stood in awe of the immensity of the universe, and never questioned that we had a place within it.
I am not trying to argue that space travel is some kind of manifest destiny. Only there are some things we do because we are human. Make art. Fall in love. Hunger for answers. Yearn for horizons. Asking why these things are important can be fruitless, because we do these things for themselves; the reason for art is ultimately art. For me, space exploration is the same, important because it is an expression of our humanity, because we have been wondering wanderers since the origin of our species, and show no signs of stopping.
Because space is there, vast and unknowable, and humanity has always loved a challenge.
I finally watched The Sound of Music and like I get it now, I get it.Â
Itâs a beautiful two hour love story of a strict man finally opening his heart again and then a fifty minute public service announcement to hate the nazis. Brilliant.

You NEED To Take A Break
Be mad and angry but then REST because behind a screen being mad and angry only hurts you. It burns you out and then you feel helpless and isolated. Helplessness and isolation kills your hope and drive and makes you complacent with the times.
Your morals are not flaky for needing to rest, to take a beat, to recover. Draw that commission, watch that show, play that game. Go for a walk, plan that vacation.
Weâre not meant to go all in every second. We are persistence predators. We wear down our quarry but NOT ourselves. This digital era of instant feedback clashes with that.
Weâre 2 years into a worldwide pandemic and 6 years since the 2016 election where we spent 4 years glued to our phones awaiting a new wave of fresh hot shit and horror every day from the previous president. Our âdisaster reservesâ in our brains are drained.
Most of us in the states are so burned out were are close to hysterics or so numb that the thought of living through more of this fills us with suicidal dread.
TAKE A BREAK!
Its doubly hard when you feel like your only way to help out is to spend money (which many of us just donât have) or continue to doomscroll and share and add to the doomscrolling.
Its good to be mad about this, we all SHOULD be mad about this. But donât burn yourself out. A friend of mine said activism is a marathon. We gotta plan out next steps and use that anger as a fuel.
If it takes spite, rage, fire and blood we WILL find a way. There is no other option. But today is only day one, we need you around still in day 100 if it takes that long, so stay rested.
Check the resource threads made available by groups you trust, talk to your friends, and check in on one another often. Itâs a marathon.

Anyway I'm not sure what Xtian (by which I mean any of y'all who believe that Jesus is God) needs to hear this, but the concept that "no means no" absolutely applies to proselytizing.
If your religion is so good, if you are so obviously different and special and #blessed, if you are clearly so more spiritually enlightened, then people will find their way to YOU. If you can't lead by example and in fact have to resort to going door to door like an Amway salesman, then why would anyone want to join your weird group anyway?
Oh, and the inverse of the right to be free from religiously based harassment in the form of proselytizing isn't proselytizing itself; it's the right to SEEK information for yourself about any religious group.
There are plenty of wonderful Xtians out there who understand boundaries and pluralism, and this is not about you. It is entirely possible to be a dedicated and religiously-observant Xtian who is still opposed to missionizing and proselytizing.
There is an entire conceptualization of evangelism that is based on leading by example rather than on outreach, and the Xtians who actually really live their lives like this come the closest to embodying the ideals of Jesus that I've seen.
"Go into the world and spread the Gospel" doesn't necessarily mean "tell everyone about your buddy JC." It can mean feeding the hungry, comforting the grieving, supporting the struggling, and not asking anything in return. Not even belief.
