These men know they can be harsh, they know they can be cruelโthey just do not care. They acknowledge their behaviour with a blank expression, completely and utterly unfazed by your shock. It is not a revelation to them, nor does addressing it affect their plans for you if they have any in particular. Nothing you do will change their opinion or fix their behaviour. They stand with feet firmly placed on the floor. They are trees with roots that dig deep enough to reach hellfire.
For some of these men, your irritation fuels and strengthens them. It is truly as though you are speaking to a wall, and they will tell you this because fighting will get you nowhere. They are frustrating, and they weaponise their indifference well. Silence in times of rage will anger the one who is upset until they feel it is useless to bother trying to convince these men they are evil when they already know they are. And this is exactly what they want. Truly evil people will not feel shame or remorse, nor do they fear punishment, especially when they can beat around the law if they have money and/or connections who can deflect rumours or hide evidence, and that is why they are evil.
These men are fully aware of their cruelty, though some are far more harsh than others (Scaramouche, Dottore), but they deem it necessary to protect you from a world they think is far more wicked than they could ever be. They are not offended or enraged when called out for their misbehaviour; they simply explain that your life will be worse without them in it. That, of course, is not true.
Self-aware but denies it.
Kaeya, Alhaitham, Kaveh, Wriothesley, Wanderer, Ayato, Tighnari, Zhongli, Baizhu, Heizou.
They understand that their behaviour, which are symptoms of their sick obsession, is wrong. During calmer nights when the skies are clear and dark, a reflection of their empty souls taken over by regret, they do feel remorse weighing down on their shoulders and chests, making it hard to breathe. It is as if the weight of their sins manifests then only to keep them awake when they should be asleepโthe gods' way of punishing them in this earthly realm while they await their inevitable deaths to be fully judged by the divine.
Admitting something as vulnerable as their obsession which has spiraled out of control and which has rooted itself deep within their minds would make them feel weak and exposed. It is thus better, in their twisted perspective, to act oblivious; this ignorance to what is and what should not be guarantees their own sanity (oh, how selfish they can be).
You are made to be the one who is sick, the one who needs to be taken care of instead. A fragile sculpture that could shatter to pieces but never does if placed far from reach, or a delicate flower that could die if plucked and forgotten but stays alive drowning in stale water at the bottom of a cheap vaseโthat is what you must become. Their gaslighting, which becomes an instinctive and natural part of their daily routine, transforms you into malleable clay they shall then wrap their dirty fingers around to mold you into the most beautiful piece of art they can createโฆbut everyone knows art speaks for itself and can thus reveal the artistโs true (and dark) intentions.
Oblivious but could be made self-aware.
Kazuha, Ororon, Ifa, Neuvillette, Sethos, Itto, Thoma, Capitano, Cyno, Albedo.
They sense an unexplainable itch on their bodies, but they ignore it. Perhaps it is merely the bites of a pesky bug that irritate the skin and nothing more. They prefer to be oblivious, it feels familiar and safe. Comforted by their own delusion and unaccountability, they fully convince themselves that they are good people, that they express admiration and interest in healthy ways. And the itch goes away.
Of course, this delusion somewhat dilutes their misbehaviour. These men tend to be less possessive and controlling than the other categories, but that does not excuse anything wrong they may do. They continue to get unreasonably jealous when you speak of others but they try not to show it, and they continue to watch you from a safe, far enough distance when you speak to others who they view as threats; all of this envy and all of this worry about the possibility that you will turn your back on them and go on your separate way accumulates over time. Bottled up emotions. A kettle on high heat just waiting to whistleโno, scream. When they finally feel that the water has boiled long enough, that itch comes back, and the more they scratch their skin as if to peel the layers of flesh away to relieve themselves of the pain of whatever parasite they think has crawled underneath, they find that they only bleed. Hot blood, red and thick, and there is no parasite or bug bite to be found. It is just them, and a part of them begins to realise it may have always been just them.
Oblivious and cannot be convinced otherwise.
Childe/Tartaglia, Xiao, Dainsleif.
These men can be quite stubborn, and yes, that is including Tartaglia given that he is so determined to reach his goals. Each of these men have great resolve. As rigid as rock, as solid as stoneโthey are completely convinced that they are good for you. They are far too oblivious to make the connection between wrong and their actions. They see themselves as soldiers and caretakers that will hunt down your enemies and bring back a meal to cook for you for dinner that same night. Protectors and nothing beneath that.
So, when accused of harbouring a sinister obsession that hurts rather than loves, that restricts rather than frees you from the evils of this world as they think they do, they are overcome with not just anger and sadness but betrayal as well, as if a part of their hearts have been ripped out and thrown to the ground like worthless waste. If anything, an accusation would make them worse. Their minds replay every moment, from when you met to the present day, about what they could have done wrong, and in their view, they cannot find anything wrong. You see, their minds have been rewired by obsession; wrong becomes right. And so, that feeling of betrayal grows. It is hot and it festers where the scabs over the ripped-out chunks of their hearts lie. They will never understand your perspective because to them, there is only one reality and it is theirs.
Summary: Once upon a time you found yourself in the world of Teyvat. It just so happened that he was the first person you encountered. Now, after years of staying by his side, you inform him "I've found a way back home," what does he say?

"...I can't do it," he finally says. "I can't pretend I'm okay with this. I'm not gunna stop you Y/N, but... just know that Cacucu and I will always wait for you to come back,"

"That's awesome! You get to see your family and friends again!"
It doesn't completely register in his mind that you might not come back at all.
"Whaddyou mean? Like, it only goes there but you can't come back here...? Oh,"

I'm not looking to start shit so I'm not linking it or anything, but you may have seen a recent anti-dark-content post circulating with a lot of notes making rounds in the x reader sphere and while I have nothing against people posting their feelings in their own private spaces, every time I see these kinds of posts there's a lot of misinformation that gets regurgitated in the reblogs/replies and I saw what looked like a battlezone in the replies, so.
I know posts like that can be very jarring and affects people like my readers, so to combat misinformation/shaming for anyone who saw it, I'm going to share some of my information on combatting fandom puritanism/misogyny/kinkshaming in its most common forms.
The most important fact, if you read nothing else, is this:
Most women have rape fantasies.
62% to be exact. I think the most pervasive myth on this content is that consumers are "weird" for it, when the numbers don't indicate that. You're in the majority!
The vast majority of people who have rape fantasies do not put them into practice in real life. A variety of factors can determine whether or not they do, particularly specific psychiatric disorders. (X)
To specifically address common harmful and pervasive myths:
the "go to therapy!" line
Generally any academic or professional resource will immediately tell you that consuming and engaging in "dark" fantasies is accepted and encouraged by mainstream psychiatry and part of the professional education for psychiatrists. (This also used to be pretty well-known until like the last 5 years or so, not sure why that changed.)
Here are some particularly insightful resources:
1) This article by Dr. David Wahl, in my opinion, hands-down does the best job of simply and thoroughly explaining why these fantasies occur and why couples practice CNC, as well as the fact that they are both harmless, psychologically beneficial to those with them, and not at all correlated to real-life rape.
2) Dr. Claudia Six has some of the best and most thorough material out there on the subject, specifically explaining why this is taught in mainstream academia psychology and how it is incredibly helpful to rape victims (X).
3) Lisa Diamond is a professional who focuses on this subject a lot, and was featured in the documentary "The Dilemma of Desire," in which she specifically focuses on how these fantasies are not correlated to real-life desires. (X)
4) Dr. Casey Lyle has specifically talked a lot on his socials about how fantasies, even in men/the perspective of the offender, do not correlate to actual risk of offending.
5) This article is not by a professional, but from the perspective of a survivor discussing how it is beneficial to survivors.
the "why would you want that?" line
The idea that fictional tastes = what you want to happen to you in real life is actually of misogynistic origin. I don't want to seek out or add links on this one, but if you're really curious, you can research about how the idea that "women read rape fiction, that means they secretly want rape!" was originally a classic "red pill"/MGTOW/4chan talking point that made its way into mainstream dialogue and thus the public mind in the last 15 years or so due to the incel epidemic popularizing those communities.
the "it's only valid for survivors then!" line
On one hand, yes it's very important to acknowledge that trauma victims use it to cope, however I feel that over-emphasizing that gives the impression that non-victims should be excluded from consumption of dark content, so to clarify, it's a very valid means for all women. Many women who have not personally experienced rape still fantasize about it, and that's fine.
The full explanation as to why this is true for many of them would be lengthy (and addressed in the aforementioned Dilemma of Desire documentary), but in the simplest terms, nonconsensual sex is the only context in which patriarchal society permits women to have sex at all without feeling guilt. For many women, particularly those in more heavily misogynistic or religious cultures, these fantasies are appealing because the idea of consensual sex may give them feelings of shame, guilt, "sin," etc. These fantasies allow them to experience the feeling of being desired without guilt of participation.
No society on earth is free of the psychological grip that cultural misogyny has on women, and shaming women for adapting to the conditions they are forced to exist under is as harmful as the misogyny that causes it itself.
ALL women experience a form of psychological trauma inherent to female childhood and female adolescence in a patriarchal world, and that is just as valid as coping with individual traumatic events.

The "what you consume will make you do it in real life!" myth
Although the resources above already address this, it's important to establish why this myth is so prevalent and what its origins are.
The idea that consuming media with dark themes leads to or indicates desires to replicate those acts is a residual element of two major events:
1) Puritan revival culture, popularized in the US and UK in the 90s and 2000s (also known as "Satanic Panic"). A major facet of this movement was TV megachurch preachers making money off of exploiting well-meaning but paranoid parents into believing that your child playing Dungeons and Dragons or Pokemon would make them future serial killers and lure them into satanic cults. (X)
2) at the tail end of this, it was cemented in the public mind as a cultural ripple aftershock of the Columbine shooting, where this sentiment became popularized as the general public blamed violent video games like Doom and "dark" music like Marilyn Manson (whose life was temporarily completely upended by the events and took him years to recover/be safe from) for the 1999 shooting. This event had MASSIVE permanent and global effects in all sorts of ways that the public often underestimates the sheer scope of, notably that it solidified, prolonged, and, in the minds of many, "proved" the paranoias of the preexisting Satanic Panic. (X) This established a precedent, leading to virtually any major horrible event being blamed on the perpetrator's media consumption, including murder and sex crimes.
What this myth ignores in the cases it references (the slenderman stabbings, columbine, sasebo slashing, batman shooting, etc) is two crucial facts: that hundreds of millions of people consume the same media with no negative effects (helpful effects even), and that in every single case cited as "evidence" to the claim, the perpetrator had a preexisting psychiatric condition correlated to acts of violence (which usually went ignored, downplayed and even accelerated/worsened by those around them rather than the help they needed).
Sorry for the wall of text, but I feel an ethical obligation to combat this kind of misinformation, and I hope these resources are helpful for those who may be negatively affected by common misunderstandings.

INSINCERE APOLOGIES. this dipshit thinks it's funny to toy with your feelings by breaking your heart, throwing it away, and then "fixing" it with a half-assed apology. dump their ass. they don't care for you, so why should you care for them?
UNABLE TO LISTEN. this character never listens to your problems. they're either too busy or don't care. this leaves you stressed and anxious, which isn't good for you. pretty damn toxic if you ask me.
TOO DISTANCED. this character is almost never there, physically and/or emotionally. it might be time to let 'em go, babes. maybe it's just not your time.
things i learned about tighnari via his story lines: (for character study purposes!)
he's extremely sensitive to heat: he visited the desert once as a child and got a heatstroke just after a few minutes of entering the area
the reason why he visited the desert was because child tighnari found out his race came from the desert, so he asked his father to take him to his heritage
he used to wonder why other people don't have ears and tails
he also used to hug his tail while reading books as a child
the glass he wears as a necklace was a magnifying glass given to him by his mother (a paleontologist). he used it around the forest as a child but now that he's older he wears it as a reminder.
tighnari was so well-liked and demanded by everyone that cyno got suspicious of him for academic corruption and forming alliances (cyno practically stalked him)
tighnari is infamous for his long lectures when someone does sometimes stupid in the forest
but his long lectures are also a part of his belief that knowledge should be shared (and not restricted, which is why he left the akademiya)
he joined the forest watchers for the very idealistic dream of making a difference for the environment (after getting sick of arrogant scholars)
only to find out they kind of suck. so he had to work to make his dream a reality, and practically took over and built a better system
everyone calls him general watchleader behind his back but he thinks it's too high a position for him (besides, there's no such thing as a general watchleader and he believes they're trying to copy their own version of general mahamatra)
tighnari is very similar to candace in terms of hospitality; people leaving the village would find that everything they needed for the travel had already been arranged and ready
IMAGINE being one of the many servants of the tsaritsa, but you remember your past life, one where the world you were in was a game.
you had planned of resignating from your job, but with being acquaintances with most of the harbingers, you know they'll probably search for you to kill you if you resign, and maybe the fact that you're an orphaned teenager would make it easier for them to get rid of you.
so packing your necessities and clothing, you resigned the same day you ran away and gained an anemo vision, deciding to travel around teyvat while avoiding shneznaya as if it was the plague.
you became a frequent traveler on beidou's ship, a pirate that you soon grew close with, as you told her tales that you grew up hearing about in shneznaya.
by some extent, you also became acquainted with kazuha, the inazuman refugee that became a criminal for being against the raiden shogun's vision hunt decree.
of course, with some mora left on you not being enough to last for more than two months, you decided to become a tailor/seamstress, designing clothes to sell them to any buyer.
and as obvious as it is, your clothing and designs' values sky rocketed in liyue first, as daughters from high society loved how your clothing was not only diverse, but also were lightweight and comfortable!
words of your clothing reached far and wide, making even more people want to see your designs, which meant more mora for you! you happily complied, even starting to take personal commisions for multiple noblemen and noblewomen.

๐๐๐ณ๐ฎ๐ก๐ doesnโt show much physical emotion upon spotting you. but you can tell in the way he talks to you often and makes light touches. none of which are unwarranted or certainly uncomfortable towards you. he just happens to enjoy when your fingers graze against his or when you laugh at a story he recalls for you. your smile makes butterflies swarm in his stomach. kazuha was a gone man the moment he lay eyes on you.
