Okay, there a lot of hoopla toward the “think you’re the only monster on the team” scene, but rewatching AOU last night made me realize something oh so important.
The main theme of the movie is being monsters; Bruce physically changes into a monster, Wanda is likened to a witch (which many considers monsters as well), Nat thinks she’s a monster, and Ultron thinks the entire team are monsters.
But there’s a secondary theme in the movie; one that is heartbreakingly beautiful. Family.
Think about it. Clint has a family; a wife, kids, even a home. The rest of the Avengers don’t. Bruce and Nat don’t even have that option, Steve even admits the guy who wanted all that went under the ice.
And Nat, dear lord, at the time of the conversation with Bruce, is stuck still reliving her vision of the Red Room, where we saw her desperation not to undergo the graduation ceremony, and now she’s at the farm, surrounded by what she can’t have, because the Red-Room took that option away from her, to turn into a trained killer with no attachment (hence why she feels like a monster).
And Bruce, even if he had the option (with Betty or Nat one), he wouldn’t take it. He couldn’t, because wlhe would always be in fear of the other guy, and what could happen to his family, even if Bruce lost control for a split second.
Of course in that moment they want to run; they want to get out from under the shadow, but duty- duty to SHIELD, to her friends, to the world-bounds Natasha. Even if she wants to run.
But Bruce isn’t a fighter, never has been. He’s a scientist, he wants to learn and observe, he’s not a soldier and has no wish to become one, and the moment Nat flings him off that cliff, he realizes, she’ll never ru because of her sense of duty. And that, my friends, is why Bruce leaves.
