Some of the best advice I got in high school when creating a character: Start with somebody who was the opposite of me, and then they will skew back toward me due to my unconscious biases. Often characters start on the drawing board as black women who lean LGBT, and by the end many of them have shifted toward my demographics, resulting in a rich spectrum. If you're a member of privileged demographics like me, what have you tried to keep your cast from all looking and sounding like you?
Runaway slave living her best life
Heemlik. My favorite character to hate.

Read Chapter 1: Prologue: Disembodied Intelligence from The Cruelty of Mercy by Elijah Jeffery — fantasy Fiction on Fictionry
In an earlier draft, her title was "Fadewraith of the Hate Vertex." She's not a nice person.
Read about her for free on Fictionry! She's so early she's in the prologue! (link in comment) Art by Axetic0 on Insta
Saangra was SO much fun to write.

Im not heterophobic, but I'm kinda tired of it being shoved in my face all the time, ya know? It's like every show these days just has to shove in a straight couple, and usually at least one of them makes their WHOLE personality about being straight. It just feels like pandering at this point.
Like don't get me wrong, I totally support straight people, and straight marriage, but I just don't really feel like it needs to be shoved in our faces all the time. Like y'all can do whatever you want in the privacy of your own homes, but do we really need to be putting it in KIDS shows? Don't you think that's kinda inappropriate? Kids shouldn't be thinking about that kind of thing anyways.
And it's just EVERYWHERE! Like they even put it on baby clothes!
Like that just feels like we're pushing this lifestyle onto them. Kids should be able to grow up normally, without being forced into being straight.
And I feel like way too many people are claiming to be straight as well. Like it can't be THAT many of you. I feel like some of you have to be faking it. Not EVERYONE of course! Some people are genuinely straight, and that's fine. But let's be real, the statistics don't add up. There are WAY too many 'straight' people for them to ALL be real. And you know, I get it. Being straight is definitely considered 'cool' right now. *Cough cough* Republicans *cough*. But let's maybe not draw those kinds of conclusions yet. A lot of people are probably just confused, since there's all this propaganda that being straight is "natural".
Please don't hate me! I promise I'm not heterophobic! I know MULTIPLE straight people! I even have some straight family members! Who I completely support! I'm just starting to think this whole movement is going a LITTLE too far.
As your husband this was a blast to read

As a writer, what is the book you most want to emulate? As in, if someone read your writing and went "You know, your writing style really reminds me of _____" what book would you want to be in that blank.
I'll go first, Alcatraz vs the Evil Librarians, by Brandon Sanderson

I like to think my writing style most closely resembles Terry Pratchett, but not at the top of his game and with a lot less humor.

Is Your Story Almost There… But Not Quite?
Do you feel like your manuscript has potential, but something isn’t clicking? Are beta readers giving vague feedback? Do you worry readers might lose interest halfway through? Or are you questioning whether your opening chapter is strong enough?
You don’t have to figure it out alone. Sometimes all it takes is the right set of eyes to see what you can’t. Tell me what part of your story you’re struggling with or message me for detailed beta feedback that helps you write with confidence.
I'm a week late but I wanted to say my biggest struggle is definitely getting stuck in the middle of a scene. It is harder to overcome writer's block for me when I stopped in the middle of the scene last time than it is for me to overcome it when it's time to start a new scene.

Don't worry, she's an early character in the book. Read about Marthera in Cruelty of Mercy!
