Benito Mussolini, the fascist, tyrannical leader of Italy, INVENTED fascism. It not only started with him, but he was a hero to Hitler before he came to power. Hitler modeled his own party, the nazis, after Mussolini. Mussolini had "black shirt" thugs beating and murdering political opponents. Hitler had "brown shirts" later on, doing the same thing.

🌊 There is a Hebridean island where the sea is turquoise and the sand is white as bone, and where an entire community was once loaded onto ships and sent away against their will.

This is the island of Barra, at the southern tip of the Outer Hebrides, and in 1851 it became the scene of one of the cruellest episodes of the Highland Clearances. The islands of Barra and neighbouring South Uist had passed into the hands of a landlord named Colonel John Gordon of Cluny, one of the richest men in Scotland. To him, the Gaelic speaking families who had worked this land for countless generations were simply an obstacle. He wanted the ground for sheep and profit, and the people had to go.

What happened next still shocks. Families were summoned under false pretences, then seized and forced aboard emigrant ships bound for Canada. Contemporary accounts describe people being hunted down, some fleeing into the hills, some bound and carried onto the boats. Those who reached Canada often arrived destitute, in the wrong season, with no proper provision made for them, and many suffered terribly in a strange land.

The homes they left behind were pulled down so they could never return. The machair that had rung with Gaelic song fell silent. A living community, thousands of years in the making, was scattered across an ocean in a matter of weeks.

And yet Barra did not die. Enough remained, and enough returned in spirit, that the island is Gaelic speaking to this day, one of the last strongholds of the old language and the old ways. The descendants of those who were driven out are spread across Canada and beyond, many still carrying the island in their names and their blood.

The white sands of Barra are among the most beautiful in the world. But they remember. And so should we. 💙

THOR: RAGNA-WHAAA?

I had a strange epiphany this morning as I was making coffee. In my bleary-eyed state of semi-consciousness, it occurred to me that today it Thursday, July 9th. A seemingly ordinary (by today’s low standards) day; I thought about getting a picture of the god Thor to post as a sort of bookmark on the day before I got into things. It is, after all, “Thor’s Day”. A picture of his hammer usually does well, visually but then it hit me. Something about the MCU movie “Thor: Ragnarok” slapped me in my pre-caffeinated face.

In the movie, we start out with Thor imprisoned in the lair of the horned demon Surtur, who has vowed to destroy Asgard by uniting his horns with the Eternal Flame deep within the Asgardian Vault. Thor, with his mighty hammer Mjonir, defeats the demon and he brings its head back to Asgard.

Thor then brings his brother Loki to Earth to witness their father, Odin, fading away. He dies after telling them brothers about their older sister, Hela, who will no longer be contained and out of harm’s way and that they should prepare themselves. When Hela arrives, Thor attempts to defeat her immediately using Mjonir. He hurls it at her but she catches it and then crushes it into fragments.

After their side adventure on the garbage dump world of Sakaar, the brothers return to Asgard to find it almost in ruins after Hela’s return and the resurrection of her old army of war. They evacuate the remaining Asgardians, but Thor knows that he cannot defeat Hela. He sends Loki to free the one entity that can and fulfill the prophecy- Surtur. Loki puts the demon’s horned skull upon the Eternal Flame and the demon rises up to defeat Hela while the Asgardians make their escape into exile to find a new home.
