Truthfully, I really hate when people are willing to tackle the themes of gender (on a fanon basis) in their story but completely ignore Scar. Just turn to him and shake their heads, like "I don't know. He's cis I guess. Nothing going on with him."

Scar has such a flexible view of the personas he can adopt. That includes enthusiastically participating in playing up a different gender (the valley girl bit) and exploring different gender presentations.

This applies to all of his dresses, and the elf skin (which is also implied to be a dress look at the pixels I'm telling you).

He tends to speak of being "beautiful" instead of "handsome" (a word he often applies to himself, in casual speech) when he's an elf, which leads me to believe that he is very much intentionally experimenting with his character's looks. This also happens with more minor feminine outfits of his, like the Elsa cosplay he did for one of the MCCs. Both Scar's language and paralanguage very much indicate that he understand what it means to present feminine as a cis man IRL, and he still continues to push for his persona/character's freedom to morph into anything.

Not acknowledging all that personally leads me to dissapointment. He likes being a badass shirtless hot guy and he likes being a cute and pretty princess! Have fun with him!

Why do people feminize Grian all the time. Sure, you can do whatever you want for fan depictions, but why is being a short or skinny guy equated with femininity? Especially since it's usually in contrast with Scar being the big, buff masculine one.

"The fandom wants Grian to be what Scar is" is a sentence I have definitely said before lol I'm happy I'm not the only one seeing it.

But honestly I don't have a problem with making Grian feminine. Grian does put himself in a decent around of feminine roles, he calls himself a mother and a girlfriend and a queen. He also does enjoy a bit of a cute aesthetic in his life.

I think the issue starts when people claim to be fans of both Scar and Grian and then only pay attention to Grian and only allow Grian to be a complex character. Or intentionally bend who Scar is, just he can fit into the one-dimensional mold they want him to fit in. One feminine partner and one masculine partner, the girl and the boy.

It's an issue with heteronormativity but that's a really hard problem to unpack, as it's a problem within queer spaces as a whole. Characters being divided into "the small, hairless and submissive one" and "the big, strong and dominant one" is something that happens in every fanbase ever. It's sad to see, but it can only be challenged if shippers like these begin to question their preferences.

I'm just glad that Scar continues to be his whimsical self and I can just tune out everything I don't like about fanon...

I 100% agree with most of these things I just wanna add some more because I made the original “Scar is what people want Grian to be” comment lol,

Grian 100% has moments of Femininity, they both do, though it’s more in personality less than looks, which I think some people miss in both making him very “mean and rude” in personality, and more twinkish and fem in some looks. most of the time in cannon he is more of the one to stick to androgynous clothing with no real Gender, while Scar does both Masc and Fem skins (yes I am somewhat projecting Androgynous Grian but that doesn’t matter)

Personally, I think it’s a bit of Internalized homophobia, even if people don’t realize it, when the first thought is, well one has do be fem and be the “woman”

I love many many many interpretations of these characters, I just wish people would expand out more, dive into Scar’s feminity, because at many times he is a pretty princess! Why is it always “HotGuy and Ariana Griande” during genderswaping, not like Cute guy and Sabrina Scarpenter…

I also sometimes see this issue with Scott as well, where people will make him a twink because he’s a gay man, which makes scott make some of his characters purposefully more masc, especially recently

I dont think i really have anything new to add but I do find this to be an interesting conversation to have.

I have no problem with people portraying Grian as feminine or gender queer in any way. There are a million reasons why someone would do this.

I think it becomes a conversation though when someone does this with Grian but then completely ignore Scar's own feminity and label him as strictly masculine presenting when this is very much not the case.

And, as much as I love scarian, I feel like this is most apparent in that space. There is this subconscious idea that there has to be a "man and woman" in the relationship despite it being a queer relationship. And I do think it is mostly subconscious and plays into the internalized homophobia idea.

At the end of the day, you can headcannon what you want. I am in no way trying to police that and tell you what you headcannon is "wrong" and "bad". I just think that this is an interesting conversation to be had and im hoping that by having it that even just a couple people will be more open to new ideas about Scar's gender presentation outside of masculine presenting cis male.

I'm realizing that this is the actual reason why I feel uncomfortable with Grian being portrayed as more feminine. Sometimes, I find the feminine portrayals to be fun. The ones where feminine Grian is paired with masculine Scar make me a bit uncomfortable because it feels like they're being sorted into stereotypical gender roles based on their appearances, which I see in a ton of other media.

I didn't talk about this because I also see trans Scar headcanons, and idk whether trans Grian headcanons are more common or I simply come across them more. But it's also a reason I'm uncomfortable with Grian being headcanoned as feminine relative to Scar's masculinity.
