Idk if yall are still active but I just eagerly quit this show around early season two. I was kinda hate watching the whole way, but I started googling spoilers when I saw how fucked they were being to Lincoln and Raven (and more, but they’re my faves). Do you have any show recs that are similar with the shows “building a new civilization after tragedy” (minus the colonization and racism etc)

i actually binged the entire show recently and i can confidently say it was not as groundbreaking or cool as the showrunner believed. the first 2 seasons were incredible but it just devolved into a mess and the ending was so dark and horrifying. also the fandom was completely unhinged and did not need to act the way they did 😭

onto your question: yes!!!! battlestar galactica is what inspired me to watch the 100 in the first place. it very much shares the themes of mass tragedy, civilizational warfare, living in space, seeking a new home, and humanity fighting for survival without losing its soul. start with the 2003 miniseries (a three hour pilot) tho or it might be confusing. it also has diversity without the weird racist tones of the 100's diversity, although the cast is a lot whiter. the 100 has also obviously borrowed a lot of concepts and terms from it but i don't want to spoil you. all in all, it is one of the best shows i have ever watched and it delivers until its very last second.

lost in space is also quite cool. and i have heard good things about the expanse! another show that shares some themes (without the space element) is the society - very fascinating

Been a while but I really appreciate this message!

The show was quite a ride (read: insane) and looking back, it's just sad how much harm it did. It had such a strong foundation and fanbase and all of it went to shit so quickly. The racism, abuse, homophobia, torture... it was a mess. Watching the show, caring for the characters. or participating in the toxic fandom were absolutely miserable experiences. that didn't end happily for anyone. The writing and worldbuilding spiralled so quickly ... I'm glad it finally faded into obscurity.

I'm glad it's over and I hope everyone who cared about it is over it too. Hopefully it taught people some important lessons about consuming media and fandom. I know it did for me, and I'm glad it did for you too. 💖

think the overall takeaway here is that clarke was really the walter white-esque villain of the show all along, and the writing was just too afraid to ever stick the landing so it tried to play it both ways. write her like a villain. tell us she’s the heroine. she didn’t deserve bellamy OR lexa.

you can tell the narrative wanted SO BADLY to fully condemn Clarke in the end but they couldn’t commit to it so we got a weird ending where Clarke wasn’t allowed to transcend but all the other characters the audience loves who have varying levels of friendliness with Clarke decided to essentially give up their own perfect afterlives to stay with HER so she wasn’t lonely in the end, despite the fact that it’s very hard to buy any of those characters cared enough about her to make that sacrifice

there are so many moments in this show where the writing would have been so much stronger and more consistent if it was willing to let Clarke actually be a villain - or at the very least an anti-hero rather than some sort of chosen one ya protagonist - but none of them have been so obvious as this ending

JR never met a hair he didn’t want to split or an idea he was willing to commit to.  He tried to deliver an ending that confirms Clarke’s both terrible and beloved and instead it just looked like she was the last one told about the group’s plans.  Does anyone who bought into everything else said about Clarke also buy that they came back for her specifically, or does it seem more likely that they came back for themselves and each other and sure she can come, too?

Not to expose myself as someone who used to watch the 100 but the way the people who cried, screamed and rioted because they lost representation are the same one’s who are laughing at the death of one of the only filipino leads, one of the handful of asian leads in american television history is very telling. The way y’all were rightfully angry at the way they killed the white lesbian but are laughing at a moc being killed by a white woman after bending down to a white man. This bit of dialogue is so damn representative of Bellamy and Clarke’s characters and the contrast between them.

Clarke is convinced that she somehow deserves a second chance in Sanctum, and in her mind that automatically absolves her of any responsibility of her actions prior to that. For her, apologizing automatically cancels out any responsibility or guilt. It’s like Raven says– her problem isn’t making amends, she does that alright. She simply has no reservation to do the same shit again and again, no matter who gets hurt. She got away with it multiple times in the past, why not once more?

Bellamy, on the other hand, is perpetually tortured by guilt. It doesn’t matter whether what he did was actually necessary. He’s like a post apocalyptic version of the tragic figure of Orestes, forever chased by the Furies. Having spent years emotionally abused and gaslighten by Octavia and manipulated by Clarke, he’s trapped in a constant cycle of self-blame and torture, with no means of escape.

I’d say that leaving Octavia behind is a good sign and a step towards healing, but I doubt the show will even stick to it; Octavia’s mighty redemption arc will be probably be more important than Bellamy’s emotional stability in the end.

And Clarke? Well, Bellamy is simply never allowed to be mad at her for anything she ever does. Concealing the fact that his sister was in TonDC (or that she could save her, since she’s dead to her knowledge, and hundreds of others but chose to let them die)? Nah, we ain’t got time for him to confront her about it. Fucking off to play the girl scout in the woods and leaving their people alone at a pivotal moment, after she became a self proclaimed leader? Shut up Bellamy, how dare you hold Clarke responsible and make her cry. Holding him to a gunpoint and shooting him so that he wouldn’t open the bunker and save his sister? Meh. Sending him to die in a fighting pit, because his plan that would save hundreds of lives wasn’t to her taste? But she did it for her daughter (whom she later tortured with a shock collar)!

It’s easier to take advantage of Bellamy’s unhealthily guilt-driven nature and have him forgive Clarke for her choice to betray her so called friends. She knows Bellamy blamed himself for her “‘sacrifice”’ after Praimfaya– he’s Bellamy.

What better way for Clarke to let her sins fly away, than counting on Bellamy’s forever weighing down on his soldiers?

Okay, so I feel like this response kinda proves my point.

- Jaha isn’t stripped of power. He is, actually, one of the most important people in the show, considering his messiah acr. He, literally, has the destiny of all humans on Earth in his hands. He gave up his Chancellor status to Abby, but he  still considers himself the leader of Sky People. He’s important enough to be on promo poster for season 3 ( along with two women and one other poc male. Which is really awesome if you ask me)

And well, this is the 100. Show me character who wasn’t beaten on screen.

- Anya wasn’t killed for shock value. Anya was killed in the specific  moment she and Clarke formed some kind of bond between each other and started to trust each other because the writers wanted to show - again, as they keep on showing it whole 2 seasons-  that Sky People untintentionally brought the death and destruction on the Grounders.  

Lexa deosn’t lead instead of Anya. Anya was never a Commander. Lexa was Commander all along. I don’t really see your point?

- Indra is not angry. Indra is intelligent and callculation and a great warrior. And she is the one who taughts Octavia about the importance of being calm and patient. I can’t really recall the moment Indra was angry?

- First of all- can you tell me when exactly Wick slut-shamed Raven? Because I don’t remember it.

Raven is a  girl who wanted to be somebody’s first choice all her life. She broke up with Finn last season because she knew he didn’t love her in the way she wanted to be loved. He didn’t support her. He didn’t cared for her.  She mouned Finn - and it was devastating, haven’t you seen this scene?- as she would mourn a brother, a family member. He wasn’t her boyfirends when he died, what’s more- she has already began something with Wick, even though it was all only innocent flirting. 

Wick is good for Raven. He isn’t her white knight- he doesn’t save her, no, he makes her believe that she can save herself and stands by her side. He respects her and cares for her. And she is his first choice. What do you find wrong about it?

- Clarke turned down relationship with Lexa for a lot of reasons. But I think while Raven found comfort in sombody else- which is not bad, why do you shame this?- Clarke had to kill Finn. Her first love. It’s pretty traumatising, you know. 

- Bob’s mum is white. Does it white wash him?

- ‘’Useless white male’’ . I’m not saying Jasper’s the best character in the show, but GOD CAN PEOPLE STOP MAKING HIM THE WORST like this guy’s like 15, leave him alone.

I’m not saying The 100 is perfect. For example, Lincoln is treated pretty shitty and I won’t pretend he isn’t. But black men who look like him are usally represented as violent and dangreous. But Lincoln is gentle. And kind. And he survivers. And I think it’s pretty nice.

He also prioritizes his emotions over hers in multiple instances, and only matures enough to be seen as a self-sacrificing white knight deserving of her affection regardless of her mindset.“

a) in what way does abby put others before herself???? she literally only cares about herself and clarke and that’s IT anyone else she sees as a means to an end to help her and clarke stay safe. she has not shown herself to care for anyone else except her best friend from the first season who disappeared and for kane MAYBE. and are we forgetting the time she literally slapped raven for not giving her information and showed no remorse and was shown to not care about raven AT ALL in the blood marrow scene bc raven was no longer necessary to abby finding clarke so why should she care. abby is one of the most selfish characters on this show and that’s not in and of itself a bad thing but don’t deny it when everything she does is powered by her needs or keeping clarke close to her. 

b) in what universe is abby griffin a reluctant ruler lmao. she, like clarke, constantly and consistently seek out and usurp power. if abby didn’t want to be chancellor she very easily could’ve said no but she kept going for it, going so far as to lock the former chancellor whose motives were to protect his people to the best of his ability, because his plans didn’t allow for her to save her daughter’s boyfriend. (side note: i find it highly unlikely that abby would’ve given a shit about finn if clarke didn’t love him.) she has been shown to only be comfortable when she is calling the shots, so i wouldn’t say her ruling is reluctant in any sense of the word lol

u can stan adc all u want but there’s a reason u romanticize the pretty white girl who played the minority while at the same time villanizing bob (a real life minority who maybe hasn’t portrayed a queer character on the 100 but has at other points in his career) and u might think it’s subtle but i assure you it’s not.

Not gonna lie I’m a little creeped out at how people are discussing peoples’ ethnicities in the context of fandom wars. But also the way people mention racism towards Bob but then turn around and ignore Jason Rothenberg forcing Jarod Joseph to wear a beanie because he was convinced the audience wouldn’t be able to tell his character and Ricky’s apart. This show that casted a white supremacist to be Lindsey Morgan’s love interest… a VOCAL white supremacist. 

The show that wrote a sex scene between Bellamy and Raven because they’d been planning to kill her off the next ep and wanted her to do something ‘big’ before she went. Which seems disrespectful to both their characters tbh. That they were both used as ploys. Then Jason making that gross tweet later mocking Raven for doing it? The racist way Jason dealt with Ricky also reflected in his writing of Lincoln and in the writing of Lincoln’s death.

Criticize the racist comments you see fans make about Bob but also hold The CW and Jason accountable.

Neither ADC or Bob have anything to do with who casts who or what is written on their scripts. And also they’re real life friends who bond over flowers, like they’re not sweating over the otp commandments. They’re just trying to do their jobs! 

So if you don’t like her portraying a minority, I completely understand but that’s Jason Rothenberg. I don’t understand how racism only comes up when it suits your purpose for it too. When it’s about shipping wars. That freaks me out.

Right so this got a little long and is a little all over the place..

One of the things that bothers me most about bell@rke is that even if it does become canon, it will still be poorly written. Even if they do have romantic feelings for each other (like how though since klak has manipulated bellamy since season 1, and I literally have seen no proof of them actually having a decent friendship), those feelings will be so forced, and the writers will try to play it across as some great relationship.

Like if they acknowledged how horrible klak actually is to bellamy (and the others tbh), and therefore framed the relationship as a bad one, I could probably see it; not like it, but see it. I’m sure Bronte didn’t write Cathy/Heathcliff thinking “oh what a lovely example of a relationship”

klak is written as this this great hero, when she’s never really done anything substantial that sets her apart from Raven, or Bellamy, or Monty, in fact she seems to just make matters worse. The writers have created an antagonist yet treat her like a hero.

Again, I think klak reminds me a little of Cathy in WH, spoilt, manipulative, and quite arrogant, except she was intended to be written like that. Klak was written like that and we’re still expected to idolise her.

Even with the nefarious manipulation and racist tendencies aside… bell@rke just isn’t a well written, believable romance to me

"This is fear based in trauma. You could have not killed her. You could have not made her a lesbian. In fact, somebody get his tombstone ready and put “clexa” on it. As much as I’d like to be more optimistic about the whole thing, his and the100writers responses to criticism haven’t been very promising and I’m tired of settling for scraps. They’ll keep skirting around it like they do with the racism on the show so don’t hold your breath.
