An excerpt of a feminist series of mine:
Period pain, 2016
Inspired by photographer Hannah Altman, I aimed to examine how natural bodily occurrences are often censored and presented as shameful, mainly focusing on the topic of menstruation. Adding glitter to this bodily occurrence makes it seem more respectable and beautiful to the viewers. Using red glitter pouring between a pair of woman’s legs at first creates a sense of shock and awkwardness, and will presumably make the audience uncomfortable. However, once examined more closely, I hope the viewers will realise that periods are nothing to be uncomfortable about as it is such a natural and common occurrence for woman everywhere around the world. Periods can often be something that women either feel embarrassed, secretive or humiliated about. This photograph aims to deconstruct these ideas by presenting womanhood and menstruating as something beautiful to embrace, like glitter, even if in real life periods are not so pretty. The title “Period pain” is used to describe not only the physical pain that often comes with menstruating but also the pain of being embarrassed and secretive about something that women needn’t feel ashamed about.
