marvel's spider-man/superman is out now , as well as dc's superman/spider-man. have any thoughts on either?

i haven't fucking seen EITHER in my local comic book shops but both deadpool/batman crossovers are still on shelves. what is going on! i guess i'll have to find it online, by totally legal means...

i've read DC's superman/spider-man first and - it's lacklustre in the same way marvel's deadpool/batman was. but it's cute, for sure - but, i don't know. not a fan of how peter's written. he's a bit annoying.

feels very tom holland coded - and, yes. i'll hate on a spider-man interpretation purely for being tom holland coded.

i mean it as in - he's so childish and cutesy. not my peter parker. not terrible by any means - and like, i love any time i get to see peter have to lift like, a building. always goes hard. never gets old.

it's nice. i like this panelling. it's cute.

i just - i don't like how young peter looks and acts and feels here. doesn't feel right, to me. tom holland coded, again.

another panel i love though is this silhouette shot - where you see a flash of red from clark's cape and peter's boot - that's a neat panel. cute, cute.

ultimately it's cute, but a little bland. peter and clark just aren't that interesting. it's more the gimmick of them teaming up that sells it, rather than their characterisations. nothing new under the sun.

the marvel spider-man/superman issue, however... much better. it's what i hoped for - peter and clark's chemistry immediately fires on all cylinders. i love that it starts in the middle of the action - and i love the back and forth.

peter's characterisation feels much better here. much less naive, more like the peter i love. more sassy, more sarcastic, just right.

love that you immediately get the sense that clark is soft on peter. love how you get to see the gears click into place as they learn more about each other (what i wantedd!! what i wanted all along!!)

and, of course. spider-man gets to lift a big heavy thing. always love to see it.

just make peter have to keep a big heavy thing from collapsing on top of him and i'm happy.

i really love this scene - just - peter asking clark to keep him from getting too into his thoughts.

i don't want to spoil the meat of it - but i like this issue. i'll keep looking, to see if i can find a physical copy. but it's a delight.

i love the heart-to-heart - it's sweet. i love peter wearing yellow, more than anyone can understand. i love peter BRINGING AUNT MAY TO MEET THE KENTS...

good fanfiction. perfect happy ending. it's all so cute and they wrote it for me. it's exactly the sort of thing i was hoping for - heart to hearts, and clark and peter bonding over their upbringings. they are so, so loved.

peter and clark are such a perfect two characters to crossover - i feel like the writers had much more to work with here than with - like, deadpool and batman. and i'm so glad the marvel issue didn't disappoint. the dc issue though... kind of forgettable. i kind of forgot it already.

I just really hate the word "fandom". It's just a portmanteau of "fan" and "random". It sounds like some desperate attempt to be quirky and different. Plus, the word "fanbase" already exists.

idk, i thought it was fan + kingdom, or fanatic + domain??

but yeah, it is a bit weird how we have ‘fandom’ when ‘fanbase’ already existed? but that’s language for you, always changing all the time

Actually, Anon, fandom is significantly older than fan base or fanbase; the OED gives the first known citation of fandom meaning “the community of fans of a thing” from 1903, while their first entry for fan base isn’t until the 1970s. If you compare the frequencies of the two terms in Google Ngram Viewer, you’ll see that fandom has historically been far more frequent, with fan base running a distant second (and the closed form fanbase an even more distant third).

The OED also rejects your portmanteau hypothesis, though I suppose sportswriters from the 1900s might’ve been trying to be quirky and different when they coined fandom from the productive derivational suffix -dom, which the OED also gives copies examples of throughout the 1800s (including BA-dom, old fogey-dom, blizzard-dom and theater-dom.

Respect the fandom, guys. It’s older than Steve Rogers.

So, seeing as the OED does not provide free access to its sources, I looked this up. According to various webpages, included this one, ‘fandom’ was used in 1903 by the Cincinnati Enquirer to refer to baseball fans.

Thus not only do we have an early example of a word that combines ‘fanatic’ with ’-dom’ as in ‘kingdom’, we also have a useful reminder that when it comes to excessively liking things to the point of it being its own subculture, people who are into sports have the rest of us beat by several orders of magnitude.

As someone who reads a lot of old newspapers - I have to correct the OED as “fandom” was in wide use by the 1890s.

The Minneapolis Journal published a sports column called “Matters in Fandom” in 1892.

Use for non-sports fans dates back to at least the 1910s for film fans…

And the 1940s for science fiction fans…

The “he” in question here being Fritz Lang, director of Metropolis.
