so how’s about we throw in some indigo lighting on those sha
so i just have a little bundle of thoughts to share, i hope you will indulge me 🥰 if you’re new here these posts i do are just meant to be fun and sorta wild ideas. things sketched in pencil, not recorded in pen.
so, if you’re a fan of karlie you may recall her youtube channel series, where a few years ago she discussed a few iconic moments from her career. in one of them, she tells the story of the Karlie Kut. as she tells it, karlie got called up by Anna Wintour in november 2012 and was told, hey, come and be a model for a haircut photoshoot, to be shot by Patrick Demarchelier. interestingly karlie herself explains the cut as if it was sort of out of the blue but that she took the chance and the gamble paid off. anyway. here’s the video:
and it was a big deal at the time for karlie to have gotten a short haircut because she was working for Victoria’s Secret at the time. and vs models (and i would assume this is especially the case with models contracted as Angels) just didn’t sport short hair back then. you can read a bit about her thoughts at the time here:
"There’s a lot of change happening in my life right now. It’s a new haircut for a new decade."
so karlie gets this iconic cut in late 2012, and then as we know, a year later taylor and karlie meet at vsfs on november 13, 2013 right?
not too far after, taylor does a photoshoot and the cover of march 2014 glamour magazine (probably shot in late january?), shot by the very same Patrick Demarchelier.
(btw this is giving vogue kaylor photoshoot vibes, no?)
which you know okay, whatever, but no sooner than the march glamour magazine hits newsstands…. on approx feb 11 2014… taylor gets a haircut! and not just any haircut, but “a Karlie Kut”
then less than a month later they see one another at the vanity fair afterparty… followed days later by the big sur trip in early march…. and the rest is history 🫢
(i’m assuming you read the prerequisites at the top of the post, but to summarize)
taylor lays eyes on karlie who is wearing a shiny gold dress at the may 2011 met gala and they briefly chat
then taylor hangs with anna wintour in september 2011 at a rodarte show wearing cottage core
for a seminal interview featured in vogue in jan 2012 in which she is described as having looked like a gold rush bride.
that magazine led to the infamous your kitchen or mine? karlie tweet, in the same month, jan 2012.
now let’s fast forward to nov 2012. karlie gets called by anna wintour to cut her hair for patrick demarchelier
fast forward another year. after taylor is finally introduced to karlie in nov 2013, she also does a photoshoot for patrick demarchelier
and then gets a Karlie Kut in the beginning of feb 2014
and not a month later she chats up karlie in the dark indigo lighting of the vanity fair oscar’s afterparty, at the beginning of march 2014
and days later taylor and karlie go to big sur. and before you know it they’re doing a best best friend photoshoot for vogue, their haydays are in full swing
what if gold rush’s with your hair falling into place like dominoes is more related to mastermind’s dominoes cascaded in a line than just by keyword alone?
what if taylor fell as hard for karlie as mastermind suggests? what if the pining started at the 2011 met gala, and what if, by the time 2013 rolls around and she finds herself in a position to do so, she actually orchestrated the series of events to follow? what if the karlie kut was a domino that fell into place for taylor? that would set the stage for her own haircut, not just the hairstyle but the mimicking of the circumstances by which it happened, as a way of making their stars seem more aligned, to make their connection feel more romantic. a sort of anne lister move, if you will. it becomes a series of things that make it appear as if destiny is bringing them closer. as taylor said, to make them love me and make it seem effortless.
there are some fun lyric connections i ran into:
the gold rush lines with your hair falling into place like dominoes and i can’t dare to dream about you anymore both foreshadow that shift to come, from taylor daydreaming over karlie to her actually laying out her plans and putting them into the actions that we see in mastermind.
and then of course we can all see how mastermind lines up so thematically with the 2013 victoria’s secret fashion show, with thematic nods to vsfs 2014 as well. the touch of a hand lighting a fuse of a chain reaction of countermoves being their snowy touch on stage, and the checkmate and pawn keywords connecting to the stage theming of their 2014 vsfs runway walk.
and i think he knows connects to this as well, with the “knowing” of ithk matching up with how it is revealed in the lyrics of mastermind that taylor’s lover knew the entire time that they were being courted. the architect drawing up the plans is also the mastermind. and if parts of the song indeed match the vanity fair oscar party before the big sur trip.. this whole progression of events fits nicely thematically speaking, i think ☺️
so yeah, idk, i’m just in love with these ideas! makes me wonder how many little things about the start of their relationship were nudged along by taylor herself, and reciprocated with delight by karlie. something about it is so sweet to me 🙈
here’s me pinpointing the moment taylor got the idea to cut her hair just like karlie’s — in october 2013, when opening the taylor swift educational center 😆
