Leslie Feinberg (September 1, 1949 - November 15, 2014), c. 2000. Photo c/o Equality Forum. Leslie Feinberg, who would turn sixty-seven today, was a pioneering transgender and butch lesbian writer and activist who fundamentally altered the mainstream discussion surrounding gender, sexuality, and society. Feinbergās writings, particularly āStone Butch Bluesā (1993) and āTransgender Warriorsā (1996), were key contributions to the queer canon. āStone Butch Blues,ā Feinbergās best-known work, is the partly autobiographical story of Jess Goldberg, who narrates āinto adulthoodā¦and comes to grips with [their] complicatedā¦sexual and gender identity at a time when practicing a so-called alternative lifestyle invited stigma, open discrimination and, in many settings, menacing opprobrium.ā With āTransgender Warriors,ā Feinberg laid the groundwork for much of the terminology that continues to shape the fight for trans rights; ā[t]he struggle of trans people over the centuries,ā Feinberg wrote, āis not his-story or her-story. It is our-story.ā Beyond hir (Feinbergās preferred pronoun) writing, Feinberg also was a lifelong activist: ze organized a 1974 march against racism in Boston, was an early AIDS advocate, and spent much of hir life fighting for reproductive justice. But it was āStone Butch Blues,ā according to Shauna Miller, that āchanged queer history. It changed trans history. It changed dyke history. And how it did that was by honestly telling a brutally real, beautifully vulnerable and messy personal story of a butch lesbian.ā Leslie Feinberg died on November 15, 2014, of complications from tick-borne infections, including chronic Lyme disease, which ze suffered from since the 1970s; ze was sixty-five. Feinberg, who is survived by hir spouse, Professor Minnie Bruce Pratt, attributed hir health crisis to ābigotry, prejudice and lack of science,ā issues ze wrote about in āCasualty of an Undeclared War.ā #lgbthistory #lgbtherstory #lgbttheirstory #lgbtpride #QueerHistoryMatters #HavePrideInHistory #LeslieFeinberg

Gender Troubles: The Butches
As encapsulated so perfectly in Alison Bechdelās āFun Homeā:
As a butch woman who was once a wee butch girl, I can attest to the sheer power of this.

I would also like to point out another alternative to an Amazon product: The Storygraph as an alternative to Goodreads! You can upload your goodreads data to The Storygraph. It is still in beta, so they are making changes and improving things all the time, but I find it functions in a similar way. Unlike goodreads though, you can do ratings in increments of .25 stars, and you can add content warnings as a tag in your review. I also think the personalization is better and more fun because you can see graphs of what youāve enjoyed. My only complaint is that they donāt have author pages, but I think they will add those at some point. Oh, and the reason Iām bringing this up: when you want to purchase a book you see there, they link to bookshop.org by default!

American Airlines Effectively Bans Power Chair User From Flying
Hat Tip to @vennsync for letting me know about this.
This is completely asinine, @AmericanAir . https://t.co/sJ8KpU2Xnj Without notice (or frankly a good reason), you effectively banned a massive segment of the disabled population from flying to a significant chunk of the US. For folks in a hurry, hereās a summary:
ā UrbanCripple (he/him) (@UrbanCripple) October 31, 2020
per that article, the justification for banning power chair users from American Airlines flights is because American Airlines has been damaging peopleās chairs too often, so it decided to simply ban anyone who needs a power chair that they feel is too largeĀ
the whole situation is outrageous but that strikes me as some kind of particular flavor of outrageous
you can email the American Airlines customer relations department to complain specifically about disability-related policies directly at this link.
ps: if youāre going to reblog this post, please also reblog this postĀ with context and commentary from people who use mobility equipment. thank you š

āIn Aden in 1927, a young French socialist named Paul Nizan found a microcosm of the mercantile capital of the nineteenth century, but here stripped to its bare elements, devoid of the cosmopolitan cultural faƧades of Beirut or Alexandria. āThere was no news except what came in cables came from the agencies.ā European newspapers piled up unopened in the corners of bedrooms. 'No theatres, no publishing houses, no libraries⦠all the dĆ©cor was forgotten and temporarily abolished.ā 'Every second of time they passedāor passed them byāwas subject to the pressure of the world market⦠In Aden, this pressure was an immediate presence, there were no intermediaries.ā 'Every heart hung on the electric waves that traveled under mountains of sea which no shareholder of Shell tried to imagine.ā 'These men were replaceable parts of an invisible mechanism that slowed down on Sunday, because of religion, and was periodically jammed by the violent accidents of economic crises. This whole mass of machinery, bolted together, without safety valves, vibrated like a structure of sheet iron.ā 'They were men obsessed, and they were dying by inches in the service of anonymous capital.āā
