My Final Fort

My final forts structure is box like and sturdy at glance. I have added very mundane blankets on the outside to give the appearence of a fort and then added bin bags on top, giving a bloated effect. The reason i have added these is to symbolise anxiety and how it is always there, however it can be controlled.

I have added fragments, patterns and stills of my video and sketch book all around the interior of my fort to add to feel of it being a working space. Some of the stills are progress pictures and some are my favourite stills from the final pieces.

I have lined the ground with blankets and pillows to make the area inviting and comfortable, all these objects are mine and are things i use often.

The video is played on my laptop, the laptop i have worked on the video the whole time throughout the process.

Audio

I have made clips for my final piece which include very loosely scripted dialogue, and by that i mean i had an idea of what i was going to say but wanted it to come from a place of truth, i have played them over top certain parts of the video, in a rhythmical way and really like the effect.

I have also added in glitchy noises, some i have recorded myself using a guitar string , my keyboard, and my insulin pump and some i have acquired online . I have applied this over parts of the video that have glitches in them

John Smith 1976

This piece is non scripted or planned  black and white video of a street. There is no reason or plot of the video and the people in it are unaware they are being filmed. Over the top is played an audio of the artist John Smith narrating the video as . if he is directing the people into different activities. The actions that these people take that would normal seem organic and spontaneous seem automatically more engineered and robotic when the audio is played over top, it also becomes more rhythmical and performance like and has made me become more aware of peoples actions in real life.

This piece is a live stream of the artists, exposing herself to her follows and allowing herself to become vulnerable in the moment, in the video she talks about how she feel stupid and weakened, because who she has put her self out there in the world and is worried about how she will be received.

I dont think this piece was suppose to be planned, and it seems very spontaneous and raw, i love that you get a glimpse into her life because of the tabs open on her desktop and you can even see her emails are open, which is something that is usually private.

I furthered researched this artist and loved that she in a way “takes the piss” out of what are world has become and really makes you stop and think or even cringe at some of the things we do in todays society.

Im Not The Girl Who Misses Much

This piece is an experimental film referencing the artists gratitude towards pop culture and how it has aided contemporary art. The video contains her wearing a black dress in a empty space acting manically and, repeatedly saying “Im not the girl who misses much.” this is in reference too The Beatles song, “Happiness is not a warm gun”, being an adaptation of the first lyrics of the song. 

She says she remembers when John Lennon and Yoko Ono moved from pop cultural and into the Art world and how she will always be grateful.

The thing i am particularly drawn to in this piece is the contrasting colours and how they resemble a sun set. When watching the video you can feel her passion through the visual as well as the audio.

Make-Up Make-Down

i have researched this artist due to the use of her upper body but no face in the video. This piece particularly speaks to me because the piece seem every sculptural and interactive, due to the presence of objects and the ideal woman body.

I like how there is no face shown in the video but you get a feel of how the woman may look, the video seems therapeutic and routine like.

Final Studio Week

I have been extremely unwell this week and have tried so hard to get bette rbut my body just hates me at the moment.

Ive tidied up my video this week and have added in my looped ending that i wanted to do, i tried to make a nod to breaking the fourth wall at the last few frames, i didn't want to go over the top. i shown the same footage from different angles referring to when you have to look at a situation from different perspectives, shown myself how i see myself when in a low mood, without the power to talk or see clearly , kept the casual visuals of the desktop and the glitches also.

i made the ending seem as if the computer was shutting down.

at the moment i have to add y audio pieces and my process pictures into my fort/den,

i am currently makinga bean bag at home to make the fort more comfortable and have added a fan, i am going to add more bin bags to the roof also

Studio Diary Entry

I have lost track what week we are on but i am still working on the same project, im so amazed at how ive stuck to the same project and kept my idea sturdy. Ive noticed throughout the process i have just made slight adjustment to better my work, ive taken a longer time actually doing things instead of sitting around and thinking. Yes thinking is important but for me personally an idea, a bit of research, and a quick sketch is what works best.

So far things that have change the most are the perspectives in my video, i originally was going to stay true to keeping the piece more contextual rather than visual making sure things translated correctly, but i have discovered through further experimentation that the visual aspect does play a huge part in my life out side of art, and because i am making a video about my life, brain and like a diary it only seems most natural to do so.

This week i have worked on adding sounds into my piece, i am currently unwell an its easter break so i feel very restricted in terms of what i can do. I have been reading more and watching more and exploring artists to add along side research.

I will continue making sounds and recording audio this week

Ive also decided to inside of take out faces completely in my project to add a black box over my face only, i have been thinking of how to do this for a while, but i dont want loads of clips of my face, only at my desk because i have a mirror there and i can fully see myself, not if its with someone else and its a happy moment because we generally dont know what we look like when we are happy because we are too in the moment

The Visual

It has dawned on me while watching a Martin creed documentary, when I watched him add touch ups of a sculpture of a dog whilst it was in the gallery space , just a while before showing to the public

This made me think about how it’s strange how people constantly think about the visual, which does make sense but in a art sense it nearly always goes back to being a white cube esqe space that I personally don’t think suits 90 percent of modern art or interesting art.

For example Martin Creeds paintings in this exhibit are bright and child like and look whimispcal and spontaneous which I LOVE

but for me the area in the gallery just ruins the pieces , it makes them look far to “nothing” and makes your mind think about what they look like instead of what they actually are

This going back to my love for the studio and the process to be heavily included in the final product

What kind of artist am i?

Ive recently looked at Martin Creeds work mainly because of my interest in his ways of order. referring to his work with cacti and how he displays them. A quote from the artist at the exhibits opening was “each cactus cant help but show its personality” . I love this, because its an insane thing to come out with because its giving an intimate object a persona and reason which in one way is completely idiotic but very contextual, you could also look at it in a visual way and possible ask yourself did he mean the appearance of the cactus and the way it behaves in the surroundings or is this man quite frankly mad.

I brought this thought into my own practice and how artists or non artists perceive work based on the mind of viewer, whether they be a contextual or visual thinker, or mabye they have no objective to seek a all when looking at art.

i myself dont really know what sort of artist i am at this point. i never gave much thought to what i was doing or who i was drawing inspiration from all i knew i was aware i was doing it.

i do take great care in thinking through my idea when in the studio and think it is important to progress and idea through mediums instead of changing the idea to suit the medium, however i also am very abled by visual artists work. i don’t necessarily make my work visually appealing i just like to make it exciting and visually stimulating

Studio: Week 10

this week in the studio i have been ignoring my fort and continuing working inside of it on my video project.

I have been mainly collecting footage to progress it as well as making “glitches” for it with my graphics tablet.

im fucking wrecked. 

my health hasn't been the best this week either, between prescriptions being lost and found and blood sugars not working out the way i want i feel as if my body doesn't want o listen to me even though i treat it so well.

you can defiantly see in my updated clips this my week has been which is bitter sweet

Documenting

Ive noticed i really enjoy documenting work and seeing other peoples documentation as well.

I feel another layer of closeness with the artist when i see a piece of work that has a form of documentation alongside it, or even work purely based on documenting alone.

I myself have always documented stuff and made sure it resembles a diary like form. Not necessarily a linear process and in corresponding order, but making sure it is titled and done daily.

At the moment i have been taking my documentation process for granted and have not until recently noticed that a-lot of people struggle with the process and sometimes find it stressful or annoying.

Because of this i have been playing around including my process and documentation in my final installation.

 i have also been literally documenting everything.

i guess my project is a form of documentation in itself becasue its clips from my life and video is a form of archiving.

a few artists ive been looking at and pulling inspiration from are Sol LeWitt and how he has documented the process of one of his pieces called “Incomplete open cubes”.
