Drawings of insects have always interested me. There are many ways they can be depicted, especially scientifically.
Ancient Greek gold ring with an engraved bee. The bee represents Ephesus and the Sanctuary of Artemis in Ephesus, as bees were common symbols for the goddess. Dated to the 3rd century BCE, found in the Getty Museum.
Interesting depictions have always captured my attention and this is one of those.
Ants walk by using an ‘alternating tripod’ system, where the front and back legs of one side move together with the middle leg of the opposite side. Source
Knowing how insects move can really help my own work and the way I make them. It is important knowledge to have.
Today the Department of Awesome Camouflage is wondering if there’s any creature more impressive than the Lichen Katydid (Markia hystrix), an insect that looks like it’s actually made out of delicate lichen. It looks more like something out of a fairytale than a real-life insect, but that’s simply because the natural world is so freaking awesome!
Lichen Katydids are native to Central and South America. Wildlife photographer David Weller captured this mesmerizing footage of a Lichen Katydid somewhere in the Cartago Province of Costa Rica carefully making its way across some vegetation that looks like it might’ve grown from its own body :

Different iterations of insects appear all over the world. This is an example of one of those and I love how different and elegant they all can be.

Preserving insects has also always interested me. Insects in amber give me ideas in how to present my pieces.
Scientists recently discovered how Assassin Bugs can ambush spiders. They carefully use their foretarsi to break the strands to a spiders web by pulling them apart and carefully releasing the ends so spiders cannot feel them walking on their web until it’s too late. (Source)
The way insects operate is always surprising. A lot of individuals believe that spiders are only eaten by other spiders or things like reptiles, but even bugs can evolve to have an upper hand.

In keeping with my recent interest in science inspired by art (or art inspired by science), I present to you this influential 1515 woodcut of a rhinoceros. It’s by the German painter and printer Albrecht Dürer.
As Harvard art historian Susan Dackerman notes, Dürer never actually saw the rhinoceros depicted. Rather, his work was based on a sketch and description of the animal. You’ll notice some inaccuracies in the woodcut (namely a horn on the rear-end and incorrect plating around its neck). Still, the image endured as a scientific staple of how these creatures looked for centuries – falling out of favor only in late 18th century thanks to French painter Jean-Baptiste Oudry’s portrait of “Clara the Rhinoceros.”

Durer and his work is inspiring. I love how block printing and printmaking in general originated and evolved and it is important with looking at how to create lines.
