I call back all my previous statements that WtBoI is a book, a novel, or is being worked on. I do not know how to do this. These are just my OCs and I rotate them in my mind. Yes, they have a complicated story and their world has complicated lore. I still have no idea how to write this. I have no writer aspirations and ambitions. I'm putting them in video games and thinking about them as protagonists of a mediocre kids's TV show. Hundreds of different versions of them exist. Yes, I still want to show these guys to people.

I think ao3 is literally the only site where no censorship means no censorship. you can post the most vile things on there — things that will get taken down on any other platforms — and ao3 will protect you, your works, and your rights to create whatever you want, however you want.

and no, this isn’t me saying “write that messed up, disgusting thing” because while, yes, write it if it’s what you want (I myself enjoy writing dark fics, something I believe would be considered “vile” to a lot of people), this is me saying in a world of censorship and capitalism, ao3 really is a treasure.

fandom approaches male characters from a watsonian perspective and female characters from a doylist perspective

by virtue of being made up constructs everything about fictional characters only exists as far as what is told about them, and yet underdeveloped male characters are assumed to have rich inner lives that the writer have simply not tapped into - when they actually did not give them any - and it's therefore up to fans to rescue the character from the writer's assumed negligence and explore him themselves through headcanon-ing the shit outta them picking up small bits of characterization and expanding from it, whereas female characters are taken at extreme face value: if the writer did not give them an inner life then she doesn't have one period, even within the universe of the story where everyone is a living breathing person, and it's not worth exploring. even when the small bits of context and characterization about her insinuate something interesting about inner world and leave room to spin an interesting backstory and motivations there seems to be no interest in fandom to do so.

and 9 times out of 10 this only applies to the white male characters. black and brown male characters are assumed to be as shallowly written and imagined as all female characters are, sometimes even when the show DOES depict their rich inner life.

Lately I've been of the increasingly urgent opinion that more people need to embrace nonbinary identity because shit's getting weird watching people Behave in the wake of the last few discourse cycles

Incomplete list of people who should just try being nonbinary instead of whatever this is:

Trans guys who insist they aren't really men and find it distressing to be perceived as men

Transmascs who "want to be trans women," clearly exhibiting misguided ideas about how transfemininity works, aiming for a Secret Third Gender and landing at the most culturally recognizable figure of one (transmisogynistic caricatures)

The trans women I've seen talking about "not being allowed to be nonbinary," starting from entirely valid critiques about the dominant ideas of what nb people look like (skinny afab white etc) and erasure and etc, but landing on this weird conclusion that you simply Can't? Be Nonbinary? I promise you can. Most of the people I spend time with irl are nonbinary transfems and they're not like, segregated off into the she/it robot dog girl zone being Different Nonbinary they're just nonbinary. Virtually indistinguishable. I know there are Real Societal Pressures to present as strictly feminine as possible to avoid the Material Consequences but if it really truly is making you miserable I promise it's okay to stop doing w/e part of conventional femininity is bothering you please please please

The entire "cis" "woman" demographic who think it's normal to hate being women and actively wish you were born as something else (can have a crumb of nuance with like yes misogyny sucks but "Womanhood Is Suffering" is a different Take than "wow being treated like xyz for being a woman sucks")

I just keep seeing people who are clearly dysphoric with conventional gender/roles and kind of floundering at trying to articulate these desires without knowing proper terminology/theory and/or justify why they "can't" transition and it's Painful. For me. Please free yourselves from your mental prisons I promise you don't have to live like this

If you know me I've been fairly open about my experiences with transphobia as a nonbinary child in the 2010s & I Tried to make myself fit a more binary mold as a teenager in response to the Trauma & it did not fix anything. People didn't even treat me any better. I know how scary it is but you still have to Do It Scared and claw out a place for yourself, even just privately, even just with people you trust. Ok ? I love you

fun fact about character development by the way. you can make them develop worse.

like I mean this very seriously as writing advice. the character should experience events and make decisions that make them different at the end of the story. they should be changed. they do not have to be improved.

they can get worse. they can make decisions of an increasingly terrible nature. they can stop taking risks on kindness. they can discover how much they can get away with. they can find religion, or abandon it, with negative effects on their moral creed. the character has to develop. the character does not have to grow.

I think a common issue in translation is cultural differences in perception of the same word. For example, печенье means cookies in Russian, but the Russian and American concepts of what a typical cookie is are impossibly different.
