Nobody Puts Baby In A Corner
Last night we had the privilige to attend Baby Steinberg's S/S 2012 Collection Launch at the Gladstone Hotel. The Gladstone could not have been a more perfect spot to host the event; from the deep red walls, abstract photos all around and the old fashion elevators, you could tell right away that style was important! We were able to meet so many people, see some beautiful pieces of Baby's collection and interview the woman of the hour herself!
Jossyl: Baby, how are you doing tonight?
Baby: I'm very happy with the outcome and the media preview!
Jossyl: So your motto for your clothing line is "What we throw away is not always garbage" , where did that come from?
Baby: I think being Brazilian, and living with all the poverty, you see all of the material that has been thrown in the garbage. There are so many people that are cold, and hungry; I've always been apart of recycling and trying to make something out of nothing. Thats how it started out with the garabge. Now so many people can't get ahold of this material and don't know about it, for example coffee filters; they can be made into blankets or sweaters to keep people warm at night. I like the challenge of using different fabrics and making new things.
Jossyl: Is that where you got your first inspiration, in Brazil? For instance you seeing something in the garabge and saying "Oh I can make a dress out of this!"
Baby: I actually started as a nurse and did a lot of work with the community centres. I actually did jewellry for a very long time and it was only in these last five years I started sewing.
Jossyl: So jewellry was your first passion?
Baby: I don't know if it was my first passion, but it was easy, especially if you always work and travel.
Jossyl: What would you say, based on your person style, is "in" for this fall season?
Baby: I wear a lot of dresses, and I love colorful tights with prints. I like booties, which I think are in for this season, and also snake prints!
Jossyl: How excited are you to be featured in this year's LG Fashion Week?
Baby: I'm very very excited because this is my second year! The first year I was a little bit naive, I didn't know what to expect. Now I know what to expect, and the pressure is a little bigger! I'm also changing my materials again, so that's always a pressure.
Jossyl: Are there any other fellow designers that you look forward to seeing at Fashion Week?
Baby: I'm excited to see Choryin Choi, he has some very nice clothes.
Jossyl: Well we look forward to seeing you at Fashion Week, and thank you very much for having us Baby, and all the best of luck to you and your designs!
Baby: Thank You very much!
