I’m Mad At Nintendo
I’m really upset with Nintendo. On March 3, the Nintendo Switch was released into the wild and with it comes the excitement over a new console - this one a bit of a hybrid between a home console and a portable game system.
I have owned every Nintendo home console with the exception of Super NES and Gamecube (yes, I had a Wii U). Like so many out there, I love their first party lineup. Games like Mario, Legend of Zelda, Metroid, and Mario Kart are some of my all time favorite franchises.
I should provide a disclaimer that I have not played with the console at all, but that’s not why I’m upset. I went to Best Buy yesterday just to browse the games, and accessories knowing that the system was sold out. I was disappointed they didn’t have a demo unit available. I know the Switch is in high demand so they likely want to keep them on the shelves for sale as opposed to a demo unit, so that was fine. I was blown away by a few things in the Nintendo aisle, and this is where my frustration comes from:
I picked up a box of the Joy Cons - Nintendo’s new generational gimmicky controller. It felt like an empty box. Price tag: $79.99 - This doesn’t even include the charging grip. The charging grip runs an additional $29.99. So essentially, if you need a full new controller it will set you back $110. Strike one, Nintendo.
Admittedly, I haven’t been chomping at the bit for the release so I’ve let some of the Nintendo news flyby. I had no idea what the launch lineup was going to be, so I looked at the games available on Day 1. I bought the Xbox One on launch day and the lineup was pretty soft as all launches are, but I wondered what Nintendo games might be on the shelves. Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, 1-2 Switch (a gimmick inspired game I’m assuming to be similar to Wii Sports - not a full blown game as much as a tech demo disguised as a game), and Just Dance 2017. There are a few other titles but that’s really about all. Strike two, Nintendo.
Nintendo seems to be running on the same trend they’ve been on for a long time. Release a gimmick inspired console with a plethora of accessories and bank on the nostalgia of your first party lineup. Most frustrating of all is that Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild was given a score of 10 by IGN - it’s a really good game, and unless you still have your Wii U, you’re not going to be able to play it due to lackluster Switch supply at launch by Nintendo. This is strike three.
The reviews are in about the Switch. It’s a jack-of-all trades - master of none console that doesn’t know if it’s a home console or a portable device and appears to be unsuccessful at either approach. It’s really a bummer because of the great first party games that Nintendo offers. This is going to be a “Switch” for me as I break my streak of buying Nintendo consoles and allow this one to pass me by.

This is what I'm buying this week: Saga is consistently worth reading. Best thing Marvel did this week was not have another Civil War 2 issue. Old Man Logan is consistently enjoyable and I like Hawkeye, hopefully they can rekindle some of the magic from the David Aja run. #comics #marvel #dc #hawkeye #saga #wolverine (at Queen City Bookstore)
If you're a nerd with New Year's resolutions to get back in shape, ONNIT has got you covered. These look awesome, I'm gonna have abs like Captain America in no time! @onnit #marvel #onnit #lift #fitness #comics
Thank God Civil War II is finally over: one of if not the least enjoyable summer story arcs I've ever read. #marvel #civilwar2

In case you missed it, a new Rogue One trailer dropped today. If you want to go in fresh, don't watch it. It fleshed out a lot more of the overall plot (and more importantly features more x-wings and stuff blowing up). #starwars #rogueone #trailers (at Las Vegas, Nevada)
