8 Addicting, Totally Free Games
With the abundance of casual games floating all around the web, we’ve rounded up eight of our favorites. Best of all — they’re totally free.
We hereby present to you our list, from action-packed shooters to RPGs. Did we miss anything? Let us know in the comments!
World of Tanks
World of Tanks may look at first like a massively complicated warfare simulator — a sweeping recreation of battles past. In fact, it’s a very accessible online action game where you get to drive and customize your very own virtual tank. It plays like a shooter, but your gun is attached to a few tons of rolling steel.
This game has been a smash on PCs, where its engaging free-to-play gameplay has hooked plenty of gamers. The beta just rolled out on the Xbox 360, and players seem pleased there as well. World of Tanks doesn’t have the exclusive on this style of gameplay, though.
War Thunder
In some ways War Thunder is very similar to World of Tanks. It has authentic war machines, free online play, and microtransactions. Oh, but it’s about planes instead of tanks. This title might also be a little more complex than World of Tanks — there are dozens upon dozens of planes in this game with all different specialties. Ground units are planned, but only a few tanks have been teased so far.
War Thunder offers players the opportunity to recreate major combat operations from World War II. You can join a massive squadron of fellow pilots all with different roles, or take on a solo mission.
This particular game has some serious graphical prowess. The developers recommend a GTX460 or higher for the best experience, and it shows. War Thunder offers players the choice of many different views, including an incredibly detailed cockpit one. There is even early Oculus Rift support, which very well may make your stomach leap out of your mouth.
Star Wars: The Old Republic
In Star Wars: The Old Republic, players explore an age thousands of years before the rise of Darth Vader when war between the Old Republic and the Sith Empire divides the galaxy. Players can choose to play as Jedi, Sith, or a variety of other classic Star Wars roles, defining their personal story and determining their path down the light or dark side of the Force. Along the way, players befriend courageous companions who fight at their side or possibly betray them, based on the players’ actions. Players can also choose to team up with friends to battle enemies and overcome incredible challenges using dynamic Star Wars combat.
League of Legends
League of Legends is now the most popular free to play MMO in the world with 12 million daily users and over 32 million monthly active users.
League of Legends has a lot of playable champions, 114 and counting to be exact. Every playable character is unique, with different skills and play styles. If variety is the spice of life, then League is definitely full of life.
On top of being a systems driven game, champions are where League gets most of it’s metagame. There is an endless possibility of hero match-ups in casual and competitive play. Heroes are continually updated, tweaked and balanced to keep things interesting.
Prime World
Prime World is a MOBA by developer Nival that brings some interesting variation to the formula that we know and love. In essence, the top-down strategy aspect is only part of the game, the other one being a village-building experience focused on unlocking and improving your repertoire of characters.
The game also adds some interesting mechanics, such as the native lands, which reward you for activating your skills on familiar terrain, or the sex-based mechanics which grant special effects when used on members of the opposite sex. Whether you’re looking for an enjoyable, progression-intensive experience, or simply a variation on the classic MOBA gameplay, Prime World has something to offer.
World of Warplanes
This game comes from the same developer as World of Tanks, so you can be assured of a similarly compelling experience. World of Warplanes is an action MMO that focuses on classic planes starting with 1930’s biplanes through to Korean War jet fighters. You’ll start out with just four biplanes, but play well and you’ll earn enough cash to get a shiny new jet.
There are already several dozen planes in the game, all fully upgradeable with a unique tech tree. The game can be played at no cost, but the in-game currency system favors those who put down some cash. Players can join together to take out AI-controlled targets, or take aim at each other in PvP combat. One goal the developers have in World of Warplanes is to make the experience sufficiently realistic that serious gamers will enjoy it, but still make the planes easy to control. You can even fly with a mouse and not want to throw your PC out the window. Just point the cursor in the direction you want to go, and the plane will fly there.
Wartune
Wartune styles itself as an MMORPG of sorts, and while it’s certainly no World of Warcraft or Guild Wars 2, it does a decent job of justifying the moniker for a lightweight browser game on Facebook (or off). Dungeons and the occasional world boss spice up the core experience, and talent trees and visually impressive skills pepper the leveling journey. Still, déjà vu seeps through every crack and corner of the gameplay. Explore the world maps, bringing light to the shadows as you move along, and you’ll feel as though you’re questing through Warcraft III. Engage in the largely automatic turn-based battles, and you’ll pick up a whiff of Final Fantasy’s scent, revealing itself even in number popups that recall those in Final Fantasy XIII. Jump into the city building strategy elements and, well, you’ll feel as though you’re rehashing every take on the formula from Civilization to Kabam’s horde of strategy lookalikes.
Pirates: Tides of Fortune
Pirates: Tides of Fortune places you, an aspiring pirate, under the wing of a veteran pirate lass who has kindly agreed to start you on your way in a life of swindling and looting. As you slowly make your way through the game, you build up your pirate “haven” into a self-sustaining island. By assembling and upgrading gold mines, rum distilleries, and lumber yards, you’ll have the resources necessary to hire the men (and women) needed to defend your island, perform raids on neighboring islands, and sing sea chanties far into the night.
There’s more to a pirate’s life, of course. You must also fortify your defenses, form trade relations with other captains (no backstabbing allowed in the market), perform research, and make discoveries that allow you to improve your haven’s technology–and your ships.
