19 year old Vegas local Shamir recently found a new home at XL Recordings but they can only dream of executing the type of high budget clips Shamir fans are already accustomed to.
Rediscovered this lil gem - this album was slept on - production was tight.
Karangahape Road has to be the most infamous road in the whole of New Zealand. Its history of sleazy strip clubs, prostitution, drugs & clubs is known.
People from all walks of life call it home be it for work, pleasure or just to score some drugs. It's my spiritual home and over the past 3 years has really been transformed by the local creative community in partnership with the K Road Business Assoc which is headed by Barbara Holloway. An absolutely amazing women who has welcomed us all and as a result, K Road is going through bit of a renaissance. New business, clubs & a new generation of people who are being inspired by the road as a whole. It's really just one great big community and everyone's got your back If you've ever been to K Road or heard of it you'll know all about the, Las Vegas Strip Club. Its sign, the horrible tiles, the smell of bourbon, bzp & stale cum. They're all part of its 'charm'. Local director, Tom Gould over the past 3 years has been returning to NZ and documenting stories. His last film was amazing, his cooking show with american hip hop MC/Chef & squat enthusiast Action Bronson shows on Vice & his music video's are unique. I love Tom's ability to tell a story & the aesthetic he has. It's just pure class. This latest work from Gould, tells the story of what has to be the longest running DJ residency in this country. @JusayinAKL
I'll try avoid using the term, "Future Soul Band", as it lets me down when i fail to see robots, aliens & space ships playing with Miles Davis on a stage. Australian band, Hiatus Kaiyote took a while to get going but once they did oh lord did they take the world by storm! Countless trips to the US & UK have seen them solidify themselves as respected artists. Here's a snippet of their much anticipated forthcoming EP, "By Fire"
Someone definitely spiked the punch in Canada, cos over the past 4 - 5 years, Canadian music has just gone from strength to strength. Whether that's just us being finally exposed to it or whether they're finally producing music that's is on par with a lot of what's being put out internationally, i don't care! Cos i fucking love it! Montreal, seems to have this scene that is breeding amazing producers. This EP from, Jacques Greene has solidified his place for me. Since first hearing some of his productions in 2011 he has gone from strength to strength and has failed to let me down. I hope to see Jacques play very soon

Former Hip Hop turntablists, Om Unit or well back then Too Tall, is back on top again! Since i first toured Om Unit in New Zealand, nearly 3 - 4 years ago i'm proud to have seen him go from strength to strength having now toured 3 other times and playing the countries premiere festival, Splore. Jim, gives me hope that there are still people out there producing good Drum & Bass @JusayinAKL
He's up there on Facebook. Very few artists just let raw emotion out on social media like, Zackey Force Funk. Everything about this Tuscan native is raw emotion! Collaborating with the Bay Area's funkiest left hand, Teeko on this cut for Gilles Peterson's compilation, "Bubblers" which is out on Peterson's Label, Brownswood. The entire compilation is filled with heat from new soul singer, James Tillman's, "Love Within", L.A soul band, Moonchild's, "The Truth" & various other emerging producers.
Really hoping to see the return of Zackey to New Zealand. His show was incredible and i was fortunate enough to host the man on my radio show.
I might be slightly biased with this one given it is my home country, however Resident Advisor pulls out another amazing Real Scenes - this one focusing on Johannesburg.
Very interesting to see how House music there isn't just a scene - it is the sound of the country. Also very refreshing to see there is something that people are still willing to congregate around and enjoy given the violent history.

Most readers to this site would associate, Bristol with bass heavy composition (DnB/DubStep), there was also a pretty influential trip hop scene in Bristol, however before that there were the Glaxo Babies. There seemed to have been pent up frustrations that haunted the band who broke up and reformed 3 times before finally calling it quits in 1990. "This Is Your Life", is from the debut release in 1979. If you'd care to delve further into the early Bristol Punk/Sound cop the following groups: - Social Security
- 48 Hours
- Joe Public
- Private Dicks
And for those into exploring that Bristol Trip Hop material: - Coldcut
- Funky Vintage
- Half A Mill
This weekend past, Auckland lost one of its greatest DJ's and personalities. The death of Soane Filitonga, has absolutely rocked the community. Very few peoples lives have been intertwined like Soane's and NZ dance culture
Tributes have come from all over the world for this truly great man who touched many over the 25 years he was a DJ, Producer & a doorman.
As a young impressionable 17 year old, Soane welcomed me into the club environment with open arms. Having been in love with House music for some time i was over joyed to see a Pacific brother at the forefront of what at that time seemed to be a very white community. Even to this day it's very rare to find people of Polynesian decent in the clubs let alone consuming, producing & playing dance music. This is somewhat perplexing to me but is probably the result of this myth that dance culture is a very European/German thing. I don't know bout you but the last time i looked around, there ain't nothing white bout Chicago or Detroit. I was looking forward to playing a few dates with Soane over summer this year and was honoured with the privilege to open for him recently in Queenstown. We offered up 7 hours of rare disco, boogie & house to an eager Sunday crowd. That was special for me Soane leaves behind a beautiful young daughter. Thank you for everything you did.
